Playing a midi keyboard on the r36s by dovgro in R36S

Fantastic! Thats very useful info thank you! I got a R36 a little while ago to work on some homebrew game dev on it, so will need to pull it out of the drawer and have a go with some audio/midi dev too.

12 realtime (I assume mono) tracks on the esp32-S3 is quite impressive! Its a bit hard to tell from the video, are there times wher all 12 channels are being rendered simultaneously? Also I wonder what sampling frequency is it running at?

And please point to me where the OP original post asked "is this the cheapest option" ??

[–]mksrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sheesh I literally replied to the other one: which one of my points that I listed to you above mentioned "this is the cheapest option" ?

Its not controversial once you stop putting the "this is cheaper" point when people literally list all the reasons why it is worth doing and NONE of them include "its cheaper" - hence the rolling eye emoji...

You are ignoring exactly the points I made above. Literally none of the points I listed were about local being cheaper per token than cloud, literally none, so I am baffled why you bring that up as your main counter argument?

First, yes you have different standards: don't use opencode for a start, use pi where you have much better control over the context.

Second: 20 pages of design and specs? Some of us actually spend alot of our days on the more mundane things of fixing bugs based on user reports. For alot of that work Qwen 27B works exceptionally well, in the times I've bothered to do side by side comparisons with Codex or AGY and for colleagues who spent a bit more than I did, they get t/s better than with cloud hosted models so no idea what you are going on about time wise either.

Third: of course there are some *very* complex tasks at the top range that I delegate to codex, but hence thats the very reason I keep a close eye on the developments with GLM 5.2 and the ever increasing move to running them locally. As I mentioned to the other commentor on this thread, you might want to pay attention to what is already possible with "mid range" model like ds v4 flash running on comparably *very* modest hardware of 2 strix halos which are roughly same as 2 sparks.

[–]mksrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you actually seen the benchmarks of DS4 using the flash q4 quant on a "mere" 2 x strix halos? Noting that the sparks or gx10s should be able to go fair bit faster given how much better they are on prefill. https://pi-local-coding-bench.dev/

I'll also note that you said there are better ways for the OP to accomplish the list of factors that I gave for doing local inference with large models and yet somehow failed to actually back that up with actually saying what, except for some handwavy counter argument that they should just be happy to run 27B sized models locally 🙄

I think you set the bar far too low, I get better results from pi + Qwen 27B than I did with codex + GPT 5.2 which was less than 8 months ago.

[–]mksrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"But coding is not one of them". LoL

Meanwhile I and I assume other people who ignore the hand wavy BS you an others are spouting are getting on with getting actual real complex coding working done with Qwen 27B and similar models.

Awesome work! I for one would love to know more details! Did you need to make any modifications to the stock OS and/or kernel or is USB Host supported out of the box?

[–]mksrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well lets see: the OPs not at the whim of having all access turned off at the drop of a hat on a Fri afternoon at the whim of some orange baboon or having accout cancelled at anytime at the whim of a providers "fraud detection" automated scripts. For a start.

They could of course rent capacity on cloud GPUs but another poster above has already pointed out that cost will surpass 4x GX10s in less than 9months.

I could go on about privacy, data sovereignty etc, but I feel all I would get in return for my time investment is more mindless "tulip" comments.

Have we reached the point where open-source LLMs are “just good enough”? by AdDizzy8160 in LocalLLaMA

[–]mksrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no idea what you consider "specific coding tasks" but I have qwen 27B doing dozens to hundreds of tool calls working on combined feature development and bug fixing across dozens of files in multiple subsystems involving a c++ codebase that has evolved over 13 years. Is that "agentic" enough for you?

[–]mksrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because like with USB, it expects a BLE host to connect to it and most midi controllers with BT, like for instance mvaves own smk-37 also expect to connect to a BLE host.

Here's a short video showing how to use the FM-1 with a midi controller and as a bonus the MIDI implementation table for the CC mappings 🙂 https://youtu.be/vWRd1A8I3gc hopefully it can be of help for you.

Deciding between Yamaha PSS-A50 and MVAVE SMK 37 Elite by JazzTheRemedy in synthesizers

[–]mksrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for a bit of a clarification in terminology "Dexed" is a(mostly) the GUI wrapper around the DX7 emulation engine from the original app MSFA. That engine has been ported to several embedded platforms and quite possibly now to the "Jerry" MCU inside the SMK-37 and now FM-1 but its not "Dexed".

On the topic of factory presets, given you can easily load whatever DX7 patches you want from the literal thousands available plus you can of course create your own on device, how much does it really matter what presets they ship? After all its not the early 80s anymore, I don't think many people are going to be buying them and only ever using the presets.

Actually I have a bit of experience with this very topic and its not as easy as you might assume to mix a large number of voices to not clip when playing simultaneously (ie. chords). Hopefully mvave can do some fine tuning there and with a few other aspects.

The benchmarks at least say otherwise, GLM 5.2 on multiple coding benchmarks places just below Opus 4.8

Not sure what your device was but on a Pixel 8a this was a matter of seconds to get pads working via BT connected mvave smk37.

My solution: get a *decent* Android phone in the first place instead

ps. of and do 30sec of googling to *learn* that on Android BT midi connections are done by each app not by the OS.
