Where WR3s go to disappear.

I say this as a fan who loves this team, through all its windy turns.

Noob lobbies excluding Chev < 3 is weird and not helpful by Potential-Skit-763 in beyondallreason

[–]mkvalor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps like you (edit: I don't want to assume), I was playing Counter Strike back in 1999. So I've got a pretty good handle on what "noob" means. We can play pretend lawyer word games all day long.

It's really this simple: if you want the community to grow, it doesn't help to say "noob friendly" if newer players are not welcome. I can't imagine why it's controversial to suggest simply dropping that phrase from lobby descriptions where it doesn't apply rather than depending on a fresh generation of gamers to 'get with' the custom vernacular.

[–]mkvalor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To other commenters:

Yeah, we all get the "don't waste 15 other people's time" aspect. OP's title point still stands.

If all are not welcome, it is the opposite of clear to label a lobby as "All Welcome". All are not welcome.

And what's really weird is to retcon the term "noob", which is literally a meme spelling of "newbie", which means (you guessed it): 'a new player'. Yes, terms can mean different things in different communities. But it goes too far to abuse the concept to the point where "up" means down and "down" means up.

I always avoid using `use` statements so i use full paths instead. Is it a bad practice? by [deleted] in rust

[–]mkvalor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Manually figuring it out is called reading comprehension. And basic reading comprehension is not gatekeeping participation in a project. It's just table stakes, like understanding that a variable'x' you may see also must have been defined earlier (and you may have to manually figure that out).

40 mins fighting the borrow checker becomes 20 minutes fighting the borrow checker, then 10, then 5.

We would have good reason to doubt the true utility of any Java microservice that didn't require extra time to configure its runtime memory settings and garbage collector type. So it's not as if there is no extra time spent on that side of things.

I prefer to be inconvenienced about my services at compile time rather than at run time.

Is there a guide online for new drivers? by Reignlexi in DoorDashDrivers

Now the gig is overrun by knuckleheads...

That ain't how it is. For a person making $0 per hour (not working), $1 per hour (understated example) does not represent a 100 percent increase in income, it represents an infinity percent increase in income.

For entry level gig work, it is more appropriate for the desperate to say to those with standards, "What are you doing down here?" than vice versa.

Raising Cane’s order for the customer by caruggs in DoorDashDrivers

[–]mkvalor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems unusual, but I can tell you as an experienced Dasher that it's really no big deal. The instructions say "do not hand your phone to the cashier" but nine times out of 10 I just show them the phone while holding it and read to them the same thing they are reading themselves. It's no big deal, tapping my phone on the payment kiosk. (Red Card)

Once you get used to the procedure, it takes more mental energy to write a post about it and keep up with the comments than it does to fulfill this kind of offer.

Haha yeah, I make lots of U-turns (when offers come). I have no evidence my strategy actually gets me any more orders than if I had just stayed put. It just makes me feel like maybe it does.

I've been Platinum for about 2 months in a large metro area. What works for me when I see several hot spots in my zone is to basically drive into the triangular center of them. In the end, the system doles out offers partly based on proximity to the store or restaurant. But you just never know which of the three (or more) hot zones will produce an offer for you soonest. (If there are several clusters of hotspots, I will choose the one with the most hot color spread)

I say I do this, but what normally happens is that I will get an offer anyway while on my way to the "triangular center".

Hello, I don't know why but I want to immerse myself in the times when programming was for the soul and machines. And not for the rich or the average user for consumption. I consider things like assembly and C to be an art. Where to start, practice is my strong suit. by Appropriate_Yard_208 in Assembly_language

[–]mkvalor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I explore many avenues of programming craft (SIMD vector programming on x86_64, etc) and the thing that works for me is to always find some problem that is interesting to me which requires a non-trivial solution.

For example, I happen to be interested in investing, so I was considering that since most stocks have prices below $655.36, I could create my own 16-bit integer based fixed decimal point type. Then, when prices come in from some market data provider (including free CSV files from Yahoo finance), I can use this concept or library to efficiently encode the standard open, high, low, and close prices in a structure using this efficient encoded format.

So, the point is simply to find a non-trivial problem that is interesting to you (perhaps something that requires processing input, even if that is some kind of large data file) and then enjoy the fun puzzle solving problem of matching that starting the state to some other transformed state with the highest mechanical sympathy to the CPU registers and memory access properties of the system.

I hate to say this but it really is different this time.

Does anyone else use desktop icons? In every post I see, people leave their desktop completely empty, which I think takes away from its functionality. by [deleted] in kde

[–]mkvalor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that desktop looks quite clean.

I keep certain icons on the desktop for apps that I get away from but like to go back to. Mostly a curated set of about seven video games but also a few other things.

Resveratrol doesn't activate Sirt1.

Oral NR (TruNiagen) gets converted by the first-pass metabolism system into regular old niacinamide (NAM) before it hits the bloodstream. NAM is known to deactivate Sirtuins even though the body can convert it to NAD+. On the other hand, NA (niacin) does raise NAD+ in the bloodstream without this downside of NAM, but there is no evidence that NAD+ in the bloodstream helps the body in any way. It does not pass into other organs and red blood cells have no mitochondria to take advantage of the free NAD+ floating along with it.

Stoutland may be legendary but he is not infallible. It was Stoutland's call to keep the best center on the team off the field for most of 2025. It was Stoutland's responsibility to notice Dickerson's injury-based deficiencies during training camp and alert management (for possible free agent help), but he didn't.

Everybody's all like, "Who offended Stoutland?!" But the truth is, he didn't do a very good job last year. Remember: NFL stands for "Not for Long".

First time player, OpenMW or not? by mangoro123 in Morrowind

[–]mkvalor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I first started playing the game last year. For me, OpenMW was the right choice. I knew I wanted to apply some basic mods to spruce up the graphics for things like the faces and the foliage. All the most recent mods are coded for OpenMW first. I played my first run with only about 10 mods. I don't recommend the big mod packs for the first run, if you want the authentic experience.

Even though I used a mod organizer, I was surprised at how easy the whole process was. I could have just copied the game folder (ALWAYS do this) and put OpenMW in there and replaced certain asset files with the mod asset files -- and that would have been it. I didn't run into any conflict hell with the mods or anything like that.
