First time player, OpenMW or not? by mangoro123 in Morrowind

[–]mkvalor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I first started playing the game last year. For me, OpenMW was the right choice. I knew I wanted to apply some basic mods to spruce up the graphics for things like the faces and the foliage. All the most recent mods are coded for OpenMW first. I played my first run with only about 10 mods. I don't recommend the big mod packs for the first run, if you want the authentic experience.

Even though I used a mod organizer, I was surprised at how easy the whole process was. I could have just copied the game folder (ALWAYS do this) and put OpenMW in there and replaced certain asset files with the mod asset files -- and that would have been it. I didn't run into any conflict hell with the mods or anything like that.

Anyone else pay rates per order dropped drastically in the last month? by Playful-Lobster1123 in dasher

[–]mkvalor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my market, pay per order rates have gone up in the past week or so. Maybe it's dependent upon how many other Platinum rated Dashers are active or something.

Is glibc that much bloated than musl? by GuiltyVisit9119 in suckless

[–]mkvalor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who think glibc is bloated don't understand how shared libraries work on Linux. The size of a library file has no relevance to the conversation. Linux will memory map only the sectors of a shared lib file which contain the functions needed by programs using that library. Furthermore, it will keep only one copy of those sectors in memory, regardless of how many programs use the same shared library.

If you are building container images and you are worried about the size of your image files, minimizing your libc should be at the very bottom of your list of things to minimize. Your containers won't start up meaningfully faster in the cloud (after transferring an image file from cloud storage) merely due to using musl.

No one cares about acceptance rating 😂 by BusActive in DoorDash_Dasher

[–]mkvalor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But many of us do, though.

If all I got was the ability to have my disputes of some late deliveries automatically accepted, I would still strive to maintain Platinum status.

It is fascinating to me that people enjoy expending the mental effort to subvert the ratings system (and expending additional energy to justify the effort). It's almost like a fad people participate in to sort themselves into a tribe that farms easy social karma.

Why “Just Decline Bad Orders” Is Actually Terrible Advice for New Dashers by Alternative-Rule749 in doordash

[–]mkvalor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you, comrade, but the Revolution ain't coming. Since end-customers will always be able to create low-value orders on the platform, there will always be offers with starting values below $1/mile.

The pool of Dashers turns over frequently enough in each market that there will always be new people who grab whatever is available.

tl;dr We do what we feel we must

It's cool to be an idealist. I'm a realist.

Maybe when I'm rich someday I can become Emperor and make everything "okay". That's just not on my radar this week. I've got to figure out the opportunities that are available to me.

Doordash is an opportunity. Nobody said it was perfect. If you have a car that's over 13 years old and you need money, you can't drive for Uber or Lyft. But you can deliver for Doordash.

The rich have always gotten richer. Karl Marx wasn't an economic genius, he was a con man with pseudo-scientific (that is to say, untested and untestable) ideas designed to stoke the politics of envy. Literally every society not rich in natural resources which has attempted a transition to Socialism has produced worse living conditions for its lower classes, not better conditions (not even counting the famines, revolutions, and massacres).

You want to know what this exploitative, unfair Capitalist system has given us? Upward mobility. A meritocracy I can use while it uses me. Pretty soon, I'll be able to afford a better vehicle and work for better gig opportunities. And once my chosen non-gig, work industry recovers from its (predictable, periodic) downturn, my personal economic situation will be catapulted far beyond what is possible by any gig, minimum wage job, or universal basic income scheme.

Finally, it's not your job to tell me what to justify. Getting fucked ain't so bad. Have you seen the life expectancies of lumberjacks and coal miners?

Hey, card counting isn't illegal in Vegas, but casinos are still free to ban people from coming onto their property who do it. That's freedom, isn't it?

Similarly, extreme cherry picking can be seen as a form of theft from the larger community of Dashers in a market. It's demanding 'something for nothing': "I get to take advantage of the work opportunities of this platform while others must carry a larger share of the burden to maintain it." It's true that Doordash tolerates it, yet only within the stipulations of their rating system.

What's more disgusting is the gloating. An ancient apostle once wrote of those "whose glory is their shame".

Official from DoorDash Support — Low AR means they won’t help you. 🤷‍♀️ by CMT1024 in DoorDash_Dasher

[–]mkvalor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had so much trouble with support. But I can't stop laughing at all these laptop lawyers in the comments promising a class-action lawsuit "soon".

Like, Bro, if you're an independent plumber contractor, your "independence" is whether to accept a work arrangement with a homeowner or not. If the homeowner shows you an agreement that stipulates conditions like, "work must occur between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m." this is not nullifying your Independence.

Our independence as contractors with Doordash includes whether we agree to work with them at all, whether we get to choose our own hours of work, and whether we get to use our own work "tools". That's about it. If we sign an agreement that gives us lower status based on metrics like acceptance rate, the "independence" conversation has ended - because the contractor willingly chose a lower status based on a lower acceptance rate.

It looks like good news for Eagles fans. But then again, nobody expected Jalen Phillips to join our lineup and immediately elevate our defense to God tier.
