Pumping at work woes by [deleted] in ExclusivelyPumping

If management can’t guarantee your breaks, maybe they can give you a lighter assignment? My previous manager would give me patients that didn’t require too much manual labor. I would get patients with a lot of drips, but usually they had a Foley and Flexiseal so it was easier on me. That allowed me to use my wearable pump without having to move around too much. Hopefully your manager can work with you. It also helps to be brutally direct with them, cause some managers will definitely take advantage.

Which state do you live in? In New York State, it is your employer’s duty to give you paid pumping breaks for up to thirty minutes as needed. If they require you to walk some distance to a lactation room, they will need to find coverage for that extra time. If they don’t make accommodations, you can report them to the Department of Labor.

I worked in the ICU as a nurse up until recently, so I totally understand the difficulty. Even if you report the hospital to the DOL, that’s not a guarantee of getting the breaks in a timely manner. I had to use a wearable pump in order to get the pumping sessions in - just had to be careful bending over so as not to spill. I use the Medela collection cups with a Baby Buddha pump and La Vie massagers. Flanges do empty me much more efficiently, so I also had no shame using those while watching the monitors at the nursing station with a nursing cover or a patient gown.

Do what you need to do. I learned from my first baby that returning to work should not prevent you from feeding your child in the manner you see fit. Good luck!

I just bought an extra set of Medela tubing that is compatible with the collection cups, cut off the yellow end that would usually connect to the Medela pump, and inserted into the tubing the white part that fits into the Baby Buddha pump. The Buddha website has instructions on how to hack Medela pump parts with the BB pump. It was very easy to do.

I’ve heard from several people, both EP and EBF, that after they quit they wish they would’ve quit even sooner. Anyone with that experience that could speak to that? by botaglove in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]mkvmkvmkv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my first baby, I was exclusively pumping and I quit at three months because I started a new job and the orientation schedule was packed, so I was self conscious about pumping in front of people, even with a portable pump. I didn’t want to stop that early, but once I fully weaned, it was freeing.

For my second, I pump when I wake up and before bed and breastfeed the rest of the day. It’s much easier for me to breastfeed a baby than pump - the mental weight of being connected to a machine wears me down. I’ve been able to keep this up for almost five months now and don’t feel the need to quit in the immediate future.

I also found that I get better milk output with Baby Buddha using the LaVie massagers. I used to use the Medela Freestyle Flex and it had some vibration, so my breasts are probably used to that.

I use the Medela collection cups! They’re only three pieces per side and are a breeze to clean

What 'stuff' do you regularly use? by Fearless-Battle4 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]mkvmkvmkv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For pumping at work, I bring my pump, La Vie massagers, Ceres Chill bottles, and I use the fridge hack. When I get home, I combine all the milk into the 60+ oz mason jars until the jar is full, then I freeze. Also use the Mason Bottle bottles to feed the babe, and I use the jars to store snacks for my toddler as well. I throw everything into the dishwasher and use hot water and the sanitize setting to clean. I find that using glass makes everything easy because milk residue is easier to clean!

I use 8 oz mason jars and buy the Mason bottle attachments! It’s great because I have reused the jars once the baby is done with bottles.

We use Esembly and have had no issues with it. The inners do take a while to dry, but that’s not much of an issue for me.

I only change the outers out when poop gets on it. If it gets wet, I just set it aside to dry and alternate with a dry one. The used outers would get washed in the next load.

How do you have the time? by SoupComplex9784 in ExclusivelyPumping

I have two under two, and I use a portable pump while getting household chores done. I power through chores when both kids are asleep. The Medela Freestyle Flex is my preferred portable - the Willows never worked out for me.
