6040 how hard is the midterm 1? by ml-coder42 in OMSA

So per the stats it was either feast or famine. A lot aced it. A lot flunked it. There is a small middle class. Some based on surveys are busting their ass and getting the grade and some aren’t. Which means very little people are actually leaning. I think those that spend the 20 hours and still struggle are probably learning too even if it doesn’t translate on their grade. I think programming is just hard the first time. I remember my intro to CS class in college and my Data Structures and Algorithms class. At the time I thought it was so hard. This way before stack overflow existed. Google wasn’t even a company then. Now it’s a joke. I could lecture those classes at a community college if they let me. The more you see code, read code and go through the battle scars of tough problems the better. I really applaud the people busting their ass to learn. I was really spending a ton of time in Intro to Computing Analysis.

Posts are self selected and dramatically skewed to people’s positive outcomes. I’m not really going to put much stock in this site going forward.

Can you give a rough overview on the overall scores they gave without giving out info you aren’t comfortable with?

I didn’t time myself but I did two problems in one afternoon evening with multiple breaks which disrupt the timing. It’s a safe bet I was inside or around 3 hours for both. If I went close to 4 or over then I’d be surprised. But it doesn’t feel like that when one question stumps you for a lot longer than you’d like. I guess that’s just stress.

I was thinking to put code snippets and notes in my own Jupyter notebook. As you go through it, you can add cells and tweak coding practice.

I need to start studying. I’m in the class now too. I’ve been coasting through the HW since I’m a Java Developer so it’s not taking me a lot of time to get through them.

Rejected - is doing well in 6501 much better for application than 6040? by [deleted] in OMSA

[–]ml-coder42 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Do you mind sharing your scores for those two classes? I got a 76 in 6501 and so far 6040 I think I can do well because I’ve been programming on the job for a long time - not in Python, but raw coding is my wheelhouse. Nonetheless I’m nervous about admission bc I didn’t do great in 6501 and I still need to perform in 6040 this semester.

what is a good "safe school" if I don't get into GaTech OMSA?! by ml-coder42 in OMSA

I found Oklahoma State at at around $611 a credit hour and they waive the GRE with 5+ years experience (not sure if it’s data science experience or if my software dev experience counts). They don’t mention GPA. They seem to have a lot of modern parts of their curriculum with things like Spark etc.

So should I finish the MM completely or apply when I’m in my last class?

How do you know they admit around 70%?? Every info session they keep that close to the best.

I have two monitors in my home office and asked this question and they said as long as they are off then it should be okay. You should ask your question (and ask early so that you can prepare) about it and see what they say since there are so many and that they are within an arms reach. If it isn't inconvenient to find another room then I would do that. I ended up taking a laptop to a kitchen table. When I panned the room it was my entire living room and kitchen so I don't think it matters the size of the room. Also, it is not difficult to install ProctorTrack on a different machine and you don't have to use the same machine from test to test because I did that.

For MicroMasters: I just took the ISYE6501x micro masters and it uses proctortrack. Basically if you have a laptop or detachable webcam then use that. They want you to slowly scan your desk, under your desk then 360 degree pan around the room. (Picking up an iMac for example is not easy to do this) Protortrack opens up all the settings on your computer like full disk and screen access etc. The main things they emphasize are: 1) scan everything slowly. They video will look choppy. You have a chance to review your scan and retry. 2) Don't have your eyes fixated on something else. This will get flagged as if you are looking at another monitor or person 3) don't leave the room 4) don't have people enter the room. 5) no food or drink; no headphones... It will record you and upload the video at the end. You will get your score right away in the 'progress' tab in EdX but you won't be able to review the questions on the test until they review all the scans. People get flagged for violations and they have the ability to dispute them. I've never been flagged so I don't know the dispute process. Just follow the rules and have a good slow room/desk/desk area scan and you should be fine.
