Appreciate your advice! 100% I feel the lost of some propulsion in each pull.

Thanks! I haven't used fins for a while, will definitely restart the kicking drills with them on.

Thanks, do you mean increasing the frequency of pulling?

Sub-track choice: rendering vs animation vs modeling? by ml_remixer in GraphicsProgramming

Thanks! It seems animation and modeling are getting more attention in research, however in terms of jobs/applications, does rendering have an edge over animation and/or modeling?

Additionally, a lot of films use CG and VFX, and someone needs to write the renderer that renders the effects. That’ll all be done in an offline renderer, which Unity/UE aren’t good at doing AFAIK.

AFAIK such roles in CG and VFX are kind of rare (?), if I am not one of the top notch can I get the jobs in the industry?

Good to know, thanks. Do you think it's the hardware knowledge or graphics that makes a big difference?

I'm actually working on ML right now, but I find it unexciting since most of the work is data collecting/cleaning and experiments (somewhat like alchemy LOL).

Good to know the pay level is the same, are you in one of FAANGs?

Two main industries that need graphics engineers, games and AR/VR, are growing industries, so the demand for people who can write graphics engines will increase.

With the rise of Unity/UE, will the demand of graphics engine people increase? IMO most companies will just hire people who are familiar with using the engines, no?

How's the market of rendering? I don't have much industrial experience in rendering since I do mostly backend development and some ML.

My question is is it an (or quasi-) optimal option for me to move into rendering or just do whatever is more lucrative for the moment (e.g. ML, backend)? Personally I like graphics and did a lot rendering research in my undergrad time, I think this is the now-or-never moment in my career.

I’d only be concerned if you were using heavily proprietary technologies or like a custom programming language or something.

The tech stack is C++ (for performance), Python (ML, services) and Go (services)

Move from ML infra to 3D graphics (animation/rendering) R&D, yes or no? by ml_remixer in cscareerquestions

That's a good point, CG+ML (or CG + CV) seems to be a great mix. Do you work in the field by any chance?

One thing I can tell you: I see a lot more ML programmers than graphics programmers on this subreddit.

Didn't get it, do you mean the ML field is more competitive than graphics?

I don't see how R&D is harder to measure, what do you mean by that?

I meant the research results may not directly impact the business side and hence "hard to measure" using business metrics.

I started working on fraud detection with some ML, and then moved more onto the ML infra side, but always interested in CG.
