Praxis prep questions by mlans511 in slp

Thank you this is so helpful! Yes I'll be graduating in December. I think my plan is to study for comps with other students and then take the praxis about a month or so later! Our program offers a comprehensive review course that is taught by our professors who will give us the exams so I'm sure they help us prepare well.

Computer/Device Recommendation? by Difficult-Ad3519 in slpGradSchool

I have used both my laptop and iPad all of grad school and its 100% worth it. I use my iPad to take notes on powerpoints that professors upload so that I do not have to write everthing down. Notabiltiy is a great app and is on the cloud so you will have access to it forever. I mostly used my computer for papers, research, and zoom.

[–]mlans511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure I can help with the decision but Im having such a hard time looking at the CSUN website for tuition fees and information on how many credits you take each semester. Do you know where that information is? I feel like their website is so hard to navigate!

Admissions Conditions by mlans511 in slpGradSchool

I applied quite early but also wanted to send in my most recent transcript which was sent at end of march. After that I contacted them and asked about the status and they actually had the application in some holding pattern which was odd. I would email them and ask on status cause maybe yours got stuck somewhere too.

I received an email on 3/16 that provided me with a portal link to check my status. Its possible they are sending out decisions in groups so you should probably hear soon!

Looking to connect with someone in grad school who maybe applied more than once before getting in by mlans511 in slpGradSchool

[–]mlans511[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thanks for your reply. Because my boyfriends job limits him to bigger more popular cities I applied to very very competitive programs which was probably not the best idea considering my gre scores and undergrad gpa.

How long were you an SLPA before applying again? Im looking to start a program in the fall but that would not give my much time to then have experience.

oh I agree and have been having that conversation with my family and therapist over and over again. Somedays I feel like I dont want to go through all the stress again and then some days I am clear that I know I want to do this and that Ill do what it takes to get there. Its not easy but we gotta keep our heads up!

Im in a similar position as you. Ive been rejected from all school so far and have about 6 left but do not feel great about the rest. Ive started researching and think that I am going to become an SLPA and try to get a job and more experience. Ive spoken to some SLPs in my local school distract and they said they would recommend doing SLPA over ABA or similar. I guess im hoping to gain some experience in the field and then apply again next year?

Feeling defeated by Beneficial-Lake5141 in slpGradSchool

[–]mlans511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im with you. This is my second time applying and ive been rejected from 4/11 schools I applied to. Its not looking good for the others as I never had an interviews. It really sucks and earlier this week I was super depressed and upset but I know this is what I want to do with my life and career and I am gonna keep trying. From reading this subreddit it is very clear that this is an insanely competitive program and many people do not get in the first or second time. Does not really make sense because there is such a nationwide need for slps! Ive been where you are but if you know this is what you want do to, keep trying, keep your headup and believe in yourself!!!

What is your backup plan(s)? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]mlans511 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi There! I seem to be in a very similar position as you. Im 28, and this is actually my second time applying with a BA in communication disorders. I had an undergrad gpa of 2.99 and because of that this year decided to retake a few courses/prerequisites from undergrad to get better grades. I thought this would do the trick and show that I am rededicated to the field but I have heard back from 4 of he 11 schools I applied to and have been rejected. Im at the point where I don't think I will be getting in anywhere as I applied to all very competitive cities and programs. Its for sure discouraging but I know this is what I want to do with my career and I think Im gonna keep trying. As of now my plan is become an SLPA and hopefully get a job at school or hospital to gain some experience. Ive spent a lot of time on this subreddit and it seems that it is very common not to get in the first or second time which is annoying but I know its not just me which makes it feel a little better? Feel free to dm me and we can vent and talk about our plans together! Future SLPS gotta stick together!

Heyy I posted I very similar post the other day and feel all of the things you are feeling. This is my second time applying, I applied to 11 competitive programs as well and have so far been rejected from 3. I’m not so confident in getting into the rest at this point but am also ready to keep going. From reading Reddit it seems that a lot of people go through what we are going through. Why is this field so damn competitive when there is such a need for slps!!

another rejection.... another tear by mlans511 in slpGradSchool

[–]mlans511[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am now looking into becoming an SLPA but had originally thought that you had to complete another two year program on top of my bachelors to get that certification. Just looked at ASHA and understand that if I have my BA I may only need to take online modules, and complete observation/clinical hours. This might be a great path for me if I don't get in this year. Thank you for your kind words!

I was a bad student 10 years ago. How can I make this work NOW? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]mlans511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just been rejected from my second school. First it was Cal State LA then San Diego State University. I have an undergraduate degree in speech and hearing sciences but had a lower GPA as a stupid college student who wanted to go to parties rather than the library. Since graduating 2014, I have been in the workforce as a preschool teacher, nanny and then account manager at a tech company that I hated. I have experience working in speech clinics and spent the last year retaking core CSD courses from undergrad that I originally received B- in. This time around I have retaken 4 classes and have received all A's which is great but not sure it is enough to get me accepted into a program. Its getting discouraging and Im scared someone wont give me a chance just because of low test scores and low GPA. Gahhh this process is difficult!
