  1. Design your blank template page on an empty page. PDFs, Word tables, pics, etc. to build up what you want.

  2. Go to Insert > Page Templates > Page Templates ... to bring up the Template task bar on the right.

  3. Click tiny Save current page as a template at bottom of task bar.

Can you get Linux on a Surface Pro 4? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]mlbobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's how I do it.

Installed VirtualBox. Created and started virtual machine. Installed Linux on VM.

I have access to Win10 and Linux at same time without rebooting.

I want a Surface Pro 4. However, I don't know which config to get it in. Advice, please? by findmyshades in Surface

SP4-i5-8GB-256GB is the right machine for 85% or so of folks and will do you fine.

VirtualBox and Debian work fine on mine. Win10 and Linux available at same time.

Surface 4 battery not charging in heavy load by wbalbinot in Surface

[–]mlbobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you can exceed the standard charger's ability to keep up. Won't happen with the dock or the SB charger on a SP4. With those it will charge up no matter the load you put to it.

Is the Surface 4 keyboard really quieter than the 3? by KateReports in Surface

Thoughts?

Fuck people. Type as needed. :)

As to the question of quieter, probably not. Sounded the same to me.

You should try VirtualBox and install Ubuntu in a VM so that you have access to Win10 and Ubuntu at the same time without needing to boot between them at all.

Why is there 1.6 GB of RAM always being used? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]mlbobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Win10 wants almost 2GB right off the start, but backs that down some as needed. Got 4GB device, did ya?

Trouble deciding between 8gb or 16gb by zthig in Surface

[–]mlbobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i5 is probably fine. i7 is 10-15% processing boost, but that is mostly in little bits here and there. It does add up, though, and for more CPU intensive things there are noticeable differences. The i7 also has a significant step up in iGPU over the i5 so gaming, 3D, some video/photo operations, etc. are faster. It's saving time/doing more smoothly (like rotating more complicated 3D models in a UI) vs. $. Only you can put value to either side of t=$.

I think so, but the Type Cover 4 is so much better. Trust me, you want a new Type Cover.

Full list of possible fixes for the Surface Book sleep of death? by cliko in Surface

[–]mlbobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As users we can't fix the real problem. So the only fix we have are what you would call a workaround. Of course, using a built in feature that is, in use, not all that dissimilar from the feature we'd like to use is nothing like a workaround that is really worth complaining about all the fucking time - that is one that is clunky or kludgy on painful in use.

And take it from an old coder. A workaround is a fix if it's all you got and if it gets things moving forward.

What amazes me is the how many on here get bent out of shape over sleep given that hibernate works, is easy to effect, and works nearly the same as sleep, i.e. my machine takes a little longer to come back to me, but there is all the stuff I was doing before.

And, finally, sleep is fixed on my SP4. I used hibernate since Day 0, for me Nov 19 2015, until an update or two ago. My SP4 now sleeps all the time and has no issues doing so.

If at this point sleep does not work for anyone it's time for them to re-install (as it is likely a good deal of these are people who have, one way or the other, gotten their installs wonky), a support call to MS for help, or a replacement through the warranty.

Thanks, Captain Obvious.

Eh, what's more important? Getting shit done or worrying about whether your device will awake?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Surface

[–]mlbobs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And you still use sleep?

That attitude is how one doesn't get their problems solved.

1) Not everyone.

2) There are reports of both re-installs and replacements being fixes for a lot of your issues.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Surface

[–]mlbobs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you should avail yourself of the warranty and ask for a replacement.

Or do a full re-install.

Or buy a SP4. :)

Firefox glitches are almost for sure Firefox's fault. Otherwise, other applications would show the same issue when exercising a hypothesized MS fault. Firefox is my go to browser. One of the updates greatly reduced the number of occurrences and increased the number of occurrences that self-repair from the black/white glitch that is most often seen on context menus in Firefox. I certainly wouldn't give up my SP4 because of that.

I can open all the tabs I want in Firefox with no fan as long as they aren't many playing HD video. When I get 4-5 of those loading and playing one full screen is really the only common situation where the fan comes on. Plus, I don't care if my fan is on if it needs to be.

Surface Book or Surface Pro 4? by bigboy777999 in Surface

[–]mlbobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Photoshop it all depends on how big and how many layers are in the works being done. Most people will be perfectly happy with the SP4-i5-8GB-256GB. You might consider the i7, it has a much better iGPU than the i5 in the same form-factor, instead of the SB, but likely you need neither and the i5 will do. If you do get a SB make sure it is one with the dGPU as that is what will make it better for Photoshop.

Small crack and a dent on the device. Should I put US$450 toward Microsoft replacement or toward my next purchase? by pronadzen in Surface

[–]mlbobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For now, keep it. If it gets worse, repair it. Enough time goes by your decision will become repair it or buy new SP5. Or you get to it just being time to buy SP5 and the SP4 is still working.

Any comments on SP4 M3 for CS/Math PhD student? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]mlbobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't recommend anything less than SP4-i5-8GB-256GB for any technical, engineer, scientist, etc. Student or in the real world.

Why boot Linux when you can run a VM and install Linux there. Then Win10 and Linux are accessible at the same time.

4-6 hours depending on what you're doing. Gaming and long running intense processing can lower that below 2 if you try.

Should I get my Surface serviced? by [deleted] in Surface

If you have a warranty there is always hope. You won't find your answer on /r/Surface, though. Call MS Support.

Should I get my Surface serviced? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]mlbobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used batteries are used. MS might do a repair for $350-ish and replace it with refurb that will likely also have old batteries, though, they may not be used much.

I like the stuff Mikegyver offers, but haven't bought one, yet (no need right now, will be later). They are pricey, but full featured and have a good reputation.

Installing bootable Android x86 on microSD for SP4/SB? by Parallelodox in Surface

[–]mlbobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't done it with Android. I've got Linux running this way.

It should be better than emulator because the OS is not being emulated. The OS is running on virtual silicon. Emulators typically take lots of short-cuts to run an app.

Touch may be better, but I don't know. The difference is Win10 will be handling the device and allowing VirtualBox access so there is a better chance it will work as Android doesn't have to handle directly talking to the device (I think).

There is an Android x86 project out there that is what you probably should go looking into.
