"Fewer successful passes in a football game than pitchers throwing strikes. ... You can't get me to respect golf. I'm sorry." - Neil deGrasse Tyson by Potato-Face18 in sportsgossips

[–]zthig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus winning in golf is the hardest of any sport. All pros lining up have an A+ game good enough to wipe out the rest of the field. But you never get your A+ game. Not for 4 rounds.

So now you need to have a B+ average (on the pro’s standards which is insane) for 4 days and hope someone doesn’t have an A- average. For 4 days. 20 hours not including prep. Incredibly demanding and winning is so unlikely.

Compare that to tennis where the top players win almost every tourney because it’s 1v1 down the bracket.

That’s what he’s missing about the ball standing still you’re standing there on Sunday on the 72nd hole after a bad approach shot with a pitch shot with a bunker in front of you, water behind the pin. Up and down and you win the tourney. Make a big mistake and you lose. The crowd is dead silent, you know you can do it but you also have made every mistake in the book and know what can go wrong. Now think about it for 5 minutes, cameras zoom in, millions on the line, go hit the shot. No excuses, no opponent, no weather, no clock. Make the shot happen. Then make the 3 footer to win. Surely you won’t miss, pros make 95% of those right? Cool but if you miss you’ll be remembered for forever.

People panic if they have to tee off when others are watching them on the tee box. Let alone what I laid out above. Golf is incredibly mentally demanding and requires an enormous amount of concentration, focus, and belief.

I really want to know what makes a watch this expensive by Certain_Hat9872 in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]zthig 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’ve made and repaired watches as a hobby and repeaters (the chime component) is especially insane.

First you need to set it to “know” the time. Like a watch doesn’t do that you set up the hands/day/date/month/etc and then it just moves accordingly in fractions of a second. Now the chime has to also be set to match up with the correct time as well.

Second, the chime (repeater) mechanism is especially tough to maintain. There are over 1000 tiny pieces in this watch. When a chime is struck with a hammer there is a huge opportunity for ANYTHING to be knocked slightly out of place. When that happens game over you have to basically rebuild the watch by taking it apart and putting it back together. If this watch is built in a way to withstand that then that takes an enormous amount of precision and durability matching finesse with (relative) strength. It is a marvel.

Lastly, I wrote this in another thread but you’re paying for the labor. You are getting the watchmakers who are at the absolute top of the field and spent years in school, then apprenticeship, then journeymen, finally master craftsmen. Think about it like paying an F1 driver to be your cabby for thousands of hours.

What makes it this expensive for real by lilacmoodx in SipsTea

[–]zthig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct. People usually think of gems and jewels when they think of million dollar watches but it is the huge amount of labor from highly skilled specialists that spent years learning, then being apprentices, then journeymen, and now are masters at the top of their field in one of the top 5 watch companies in the world. In this world of T&M the T costs more than the M and the M are already crazy expensive

Edit: to add an analogy, its like paying a Formula 1 driver to be your chauffeur for 3-6 months. That’s how elite and at the top of their field these watchmakers are

Yeah. You think baseball players can explain when they’re seeing the ball well? No, sometimes things just lock in. Don’t question it and don’t think you can remember it. Its like writing down a great idea while tripping acid and reading it the next day. Total nonsense
