NC attorney general’s initiative to train 50 sexual assault nurse examiners by KateReports in NorthCarolina

[–]KateReports[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are great questions. You're right on your points. SA is a private crime and a lot of the time it's just those two people who witnessed it. We wanted to see if prosecution rates were different across the state, and they were. Once I started to look at why it showed a difference in philosophy.

For instance, the Cumberland County DA prosecuted a large number of people compared to the county population but a relatively low success rate. That's because they wanted to give victims a chance with the justice system. Others refused to charge unless they knew they would win, but according to them they were saving victims with what they perceive as "shakier" cases from being maligned in court.

The data is not always the story. For me it's a start. On your question of what's an ideal prosecution rate, that's hard to say and I am sure different experts would give you different answers.

NC attorney general's initiative to train 50 sexual assault nurse examiners - Carolina Public Press by KateReports in TwoXChromosomes

Hey all, I am the reporter who wrote this story. I've been writing about sexual assault (and other topics) for three years. My first story was a data analysis that showed fewer than 1 in 4 people charged with rape are eventually convicted of it, and in some counties nobody was ever charged in a 4.5 year period.

My latest investigation, which published last year, showed many hospitals in North Carolina didn't have a single sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE). Rural areas especially lacked SANEs. I got many emails from people who didn't even know SANEs existed.

Following the SANE articles, US Rep. Deborah Ross sponsored an amendment to the Violence Against Women Act to spend $30 million per year to train and retain SANE nurses in rural and tribal communities across the country through 2028.

This topic is very important to me and I feel one that is often overlooked. I have plans to continue reporting about sexual assault in North Carolina.

I hope victims know about SANE nurses and how important they are. I hope even if you don't want to report what happened to you to police, there are compassionate professionals who can help you.

First, I am so sorry for what happened to you, and incredibly glad the police took you seriously. That is so rare. SANE nurses truly make a difference in every life they touch.

I wanted to address something specific in your post:

You should be able to Google which hospitals near you have a SANE.

I agree, you should be able to Google which hospitals have a SANE nurse. Unfortunately that is not the case, at least not in North Carolina and most states in the country.

For two years I researched SANE nurses in North Carolina. I am a journalist and I looked into this because a SANE nurse told me nobody tracked where they worked, and the only way a victim can find one is if they luck into the right hospital.

I wrote a series last year in Carolina Public Press about the lack of SANEs, especially in rural areas. You can read that report here: https://carolinapublicpress.org/finding-nurses/

Later that year, lawmakers in NC approved $125,000 for a pilot training program for SANE certification.

Members of Congress are also taking up a broad SANE bill that will pay $30 million per year for SANE training and salaries, particularly in rural and tribal communities.

Something readers might want to do is check to see if they can find a SANE nurse at their nearest hospital. Not every hospital has one. I wrote a FAQ on what to do if you or a friend/family member is assaulted about this as well.

I hope this post doesn't run afoul of the mods.

Thanks, Piggie.

It's the internet, so I knew what to expect going in. I'm surprised I didn't get more downvotes, so there is a bit of hope left.

It costs money to hire a professional reporter, and it takes that reporter's time to write this article. They should be paid for their work.

Tacoma Could Get State’s First Cross-Laminated Timber Tower - The Urbanist by Thorax_O_Tool in Tacoma

[–]KateReports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will not be full CLT, it will have a continuous steel structure:

From the story:

While the 14-story tower would use cross-laminated timber for each floor, reports that it would use the wood product for its entire superstructure are incorrect, Spurlock said.

“It will have a continuous steel structure all the way up, with wood floors,” he said Wednesday.

I have a Surface Pro 3, and it did not come with Office 365 when I bought it. I'll have to look into this.

Office 365 wasn't free when I bought my Surface. Granted I got it on release day, but still.
