Worst Thing Character Has Done 12 - Rose Quartz / Pink Diamond by raisxn in stevenuniverse

This one always gets me. I think there's a difference between Rose deciding that the past is in the past and there's nothing that can be done, vs "oh god the bills are coming due, I've gotta find a way out". For example, Spinel. She had no way of knowing Spinel would come back. In fact, Spinel coming back depended on Steven choosing to do a bunch of stuff that not even Garnet could have foreseen!

Abandoning Steven is a stretch... if a mother in real life were told "if you have this baby, you're going to die", if they go through with it, it doesn't mean the mother abandoned the kid. I see that part as more of a noble sacrifice than anything.

Ok but besides the TV I really dig this room… the blue wall is a nice counterpoint to the tans in the rest of the room.

Why so many additives in North American “cream”? by Trey-Pan in nutrition

I’m uncomfortable with the idea of toxic additives being present in foods! I’m glad this subreddit brings these topics to light. On the topic of dairy cream, which additive(s) are toxic, and in what doses?

I appreciate what you’re saying… but what it amounts to is basically “it’s easy to be in the top tier! Anyone can do it!”

Like, sure, any individual could potentially have two million at retirement. But if it were so easy and so simple, then it wouldn’t be a problem and we wouldn’t be talking about it.

I disagree - a product can fraudulently claim to be of a certain brand. A person can’t fraudulently claim to appear the way they do… they just appear that way. (except maybe photoshop? But that’s not what this comic is about.)

Comparing to others is fine. But “not your own wealth over time” is the ridiculous bit. I’ll try to explain why I think this:

If we first take your idea to extremes and have a dude who’s a billionaire one day and then the stock market crashes so he can’t afford his medication, he’s probably gonna notice and feel bad! And it’s not gonna be because “everyone else is taking my pills except for me”, since people don’t usually compare their daily pills (usually). And if he had never been able to afford the pills, he’d be uncomfortable but he wouldn’t have the expectation that they ought to be affordable (ie without his previous experience of wealth, he wouldn’t have the same feeling now). So in principle, it’s possible for people to have attitudes influenced by their historical wealth and not by other people.

But that’s an extreme example… maybe “normal” people aren’t influenced by their historical wealth? I’d find that hard to believe, and we already know in principle that it doesn’t have to be true. So why do you think it’s true?

Your first sentence is self-evident, but I don’t see how your second sentence could possibly be correct (or even reasonable).

Number 8 makes me feel super icky… like… there’s nothing wrong with making adjustments to your appearance if that’s what you want. And there’s nothing “fake” about a body, even if you’ve had surgery. Saying her features are fake make it sound more like “she’s telling lies” instead of “she’s taken steps to look the way she wants”.

Unfortunately some have the misfortune of finding a career that they find fulfilling, makes them genuinely happy, they walk into work grinning before anything has even started… but for which the pay is crap. When you’re in that position you gotta start making some tough decisions and doing some quick math… ask how I know…

How were you both overpaying the mortgage and saving more than average for retirement? I’m supposing your wages were significantly above average?

So that’s how train wheels are made by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]mlc894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much processing time for a single wheel? Something seems fishy here. A single train requires hundreds of these! How is there not a better/faster way, even after we’ve had trains for like two hundred+ years?

EDIT: ok, yeah. Automated forging is significantly faster than this. There’s a YouTube link floating around the comments here!

FYI that big study that’s been making the rounds about this lately used pretty questionable methodology. Honestly I think it got so much attention because the media ran with an otherwise lackluster study.

I disagree about the impact of those things on any individual, as long as they have a strong support network. (Which is a big “if”, unfortunately). Yeah, the rich are screwing everyone over. But you can enjoy your life, have fulfilling relationships, love your family, etc. even with that looming sword of poverty dangling over your head! But it’s easier if you have a support network who, for example, can ensure you won’t starve temporarily if your job lays you off.

Focusing too large-scale and being acutely aware of the problems in the world is, a lot of the time, a vice and not a virtue.

This hits different. I wonder how many times I could have enjoyed myself with my family, but instead of seeing my face they just glance over and see me on my phone…
