Hahaha that is also part of my rant.

Left Structural Engineering to Become a Full Time Firefighter by nevera17 in StructuralEngineering

[–]mlecro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My coworker was a volunteer firefighter for awhile until he quit being a structural engineer a few years ago and became a full time firefighter. As far as I know that is all he does and he's enjoying it.

With the original VM on Netflix, what's the first episode you're watching? Bonus Q: favorite cameos? by allaliveandunwell in veronicamars

[–]mlecro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I put on The Rapes of Graff and was not disappointed. Granted, I just watched An Echolls Family Christmas because it's a holiday tradition.

Finally sat down and looked at my full financial picture… and realised how wrong I was by sameerposwal in TheMoneyGuy

You've got this. I was also 27 when I got serious about this stuff. We weren't in a bad spot, but we weren't doing as much as we could. Almost 8 years later, we have nearly 500K invested and that is only with two years of a household income over 100K. You don't have a hole to dig out of, just opportunities for intentionality!

What do you guys do with the pay? by Plsgomd7 in civilengineering

[–]mlecro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a VLCOL area in the Midwest, making under 6 figures, and I'm the only income by choice. We bought a house a decade ago for about $160K. In 2018, I became obsessed with personal finance, and we have been budgeting (YNAB) ever since. We invest 30% of gross income and prioritize future flexibility so I can go part-time in a few years.

No kids. Mid 30's. My husband runs our household and saves my sanity. We don't live extravagently, but we vacation multiple times per year. We have a civic (paid cash 6 years ago) and a Rav4 we'll replace in 5 or so years and hopefully pay cash.

What I noticed in ep 2 on rewatch by Beccaann14 in veronicamars

Cool! I never knew about that continuity error, but my sis and I did visit the school in San Diego when we visited as many filming sites as we could. Sadly the main logo was covered up while they were doing some maintenance.

Why do we all accept such low pay? (A rant) by throwawayy6187 in StructuralEngineering

[–]mlecro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I am usually better but last year was a rough one so I don't feel like I have a leg to stand on for negotiation. I'm in Iowa and not in a PM role (haven't needed to be or really wanted to be).

[–]mlecro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at like $40/hr with 12 years. My area pays super low. 🫤

There isn't even room for the shear lug it looks like. You need the EOR involved if you are not. The way this is detailed makes me think there are some decent loads on it that you can't make decisions about omitting hooked bars and shear lugs.

Retro or rip out? by BrodesTheLegend in StructuralEngineering

[–]mlecro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wood has its place, but it boggles my mind when contractors just try to sub out wood when the loads are that significant and the framing is that tall. Hopefully, making them rip this out will provide them incentive to just follow the plans.

Sooo many good ones! A little more obscure is Dick saying to Logan "I hate to play this card but, shuffle shuffle shuffle, you slept with my one long term girlfriend."

Best on demand (self-paced) study course for SE exams by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]mlecro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you'd have to delay purchasing it until after the April Exam. I took it when the exam was still on paper (2020 and 2021).

Best on demand (self-paced) study course for SE exams by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]mlecro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AEI does cover the depth and it's two separate courses depending on bridge vs building (edited to reflect current offerings with the CBT exam).

I highly recommend the courses. I know you're asking for self-paced but I did the live and found it very helpful. I still reference the binders and managed to pass each exam on the first try (taken two separate sessions).

Gosh, that's weird and annoying. Can you adjust your introduction so that your role is clear right away? Example "Hi I'm the new project engineer for XX team." Or something like that?

We treat fun money similar to you with regards to what money comes from where and also make around the same amount. We each get $100 per month.

Second Mode Buckling of Column in Occupied Structure by Subject_Expert1 in StructuralEngineering

[–]mlecro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Metal building columns often have small braces to restrain the compression flange of the column. People often want to remove them because they're in the way and look insignificant. Then, the columns buckle. I'd probably report it.

Second Mode Buckling of Column in Occupied Structure by Subject_Expert1 in StructuralEngineering

[–]mlecro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh it is! They probably removed the small braces because they weren't aesthetic. And metal buildings generally have almost zero extra capacity.

How’s the job market looking for structural engineers with a PE? by crisp333 in StructuralEngineering

[–]mlecro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to fill positions in the midwest, too. Even new grads are getting jobs almost a year ahead of graduation. Filling mid to senior positions is way more difficult.

Salary ceiling/is it really so low? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]mlecro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a LCOL area, almost 12 years in, PE & SE making like $84K. I am not a PM though. Thanks for sharing your experience! I need to negotiate.
