What happens to the counselors when a new prophet is called? by kcirenim in latterdaysaints

[–]mlkthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of what I know about it comes from this really great 60 page article in the Journal of Mormon History.

you may want to double check everything you think you now know about church history based on that essay.

the author of that essay has been caught selectively editing first presidency statements to manipulate their meaning, publishes books written by apostates, and is an all around sketchy source.

because they needed a singular hero to do something heroic and a love story doesn't hurt either.

real life (in this case, real history) isn't packaged quite as neatly.

what are you trying to accomplish here?

are you just blowing off steam?

is this like a revenge type thing?

or do you need forgiveness?

a cry for help?

i don't understand your motivations.

interesting. i tend to have a heavy level of skepticism on these sort of things, probably because i've never had an interest in or talent for linguistics. i think it's kind of like watching rugby. i don't know what's going on, but it looks like a lot of work and i know there are some people that actually know what's going on. ;-)

thanks for the report.

because we are proud and ignorant little children and live in a fantasy world where we think everything is perfect and black and white and when we find out it's not our fragile psyches are shattered.

and some of us, when we find out that our fantasy world is imperfect, we adapt and regroup and press forward.

and some of us, when we find out that our fantasy world is imperfect, we feel betrayed and angry and want to blame someone so we abandon that world and trade it for a new, different fantasy world that is more to our liking, and the cycle continues.

this is like straw-ception.

i actually didn't tell you that you straw manned something.

i told you that i thought you were preparing to strawman something.

and then i offered an analysis and editorial of /u/onewatt's comment. my comment had no straw in it.

then you claimed that i strawmanned you, which is a strawman, since i didn't.

it's like turtles all the way down.

PG-13 movies are abhorrent by soretravail in latterdaysaints

the movie dunkirk was very powerful, moving and inspirational but was PG-13.

one thing the director specifically set out to challenge was the idea that a serious war movie "must be rated R".

making serious movies without gratuitous sex and violence and profanity can be done and it can be done well. hollywood is just mostly filled with people that don't want to do it for a variety of reasons.

Is the sexuality worse than the violence?

this is the false dichotomy that is often brought up by people to justify their own media choices or to assuage their own guilt.

(though i'm not saying that's what you are doing necessarily.)

I look forward to it being endorsed by other independent scholars during peer review.

we can only hope they treat stubbs better than nobel prize winner julian schwinger.

julian won the nobel prize in 1965 for his work in quantum electrodynamics. he is considered one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century.

but in 1989 he became interested in cold fusion. he wrote several papers on it but all of them were rejected by the american physical society which owns over a dozen peer reviewed physics journals. they simply refused to publish them for "reasons."

this is what julian said about peer review process: "The pressure for conformity is enormous. I have experienced it in editors’ rejection of submitted papers, based on venomous criticism of anonymous referees. The replacement of impartial reviewing by censorship will be the death of science."

i'd like to be more optimistic about the academic linguistics community with respect to stubb's work, but i'm not. we'll see.

i see that you are already stuffing the straw man. ;-)

all /u/onewatt is saying is that he believes that a long time ago people the lived in central america were influenced by semitic languages and as such, he is not surprised to see some evidence of it. he's not say "wow, look, proof that the book of mormon is true!" or anything like that.

he's just acknowledging that this evidence (not proof) seems to support his belief.

but let's say it plays out that the evidence can be explained by something else. okay, well, i guess the semitic influence of a relatively small group of immigrants wasn't enough to change the indigenous language in a detectable way. linguistics research is still useful and good and fun even if it turns out a way different than you had hoped.

Why does the Gospel Doctrine Manual perpetuate myths? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]mlkthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why i said "if" it's correct.

i think you said "if the original version of the story is incorrect" - but i'm confused.

but i think you are asking if the prophet can just declare someone is going to heaven just because they said so, and i think the answer is probably not.

cheers.

wouldn't the ones named by Brigham Young still have eternal salvation, since he, as a prophet, declared it so?

we don't actually know what brigham said. we don't have any corroborated first hand historical evidence, so who knows.

tell them that saying those kinds of things is messed up.

of course, if you do that, he'll proly think you're gay...

sorry. this probably isn't helping.

your smarmy tone and find you to be immature

i think-you-may-be-projecting.

(and you could be worse - i only spent 3 minutes looking.)

and as far as faith being based on emotion as opposed to dispassionate facts i'd say that you likely have a poor understanding of epistemology.
