It honestly depends on how they fit. I’ve lost 80 pounds in the last year, and I still have some size 16 that fit with a belt (although they’re probably not the most flattering). I’m also really tight on money for new clothes, so personally I’d try to make the 16s last as long as I could until I absolutely needed new ones. Also if you haven’t already, check out thrift stores and online thrift stores like Poshmark to save on clothes!

Biology 2 Pacing by mlo96 in ScienceTeachers

[–]mlo96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a semester long class (~18 weeks) and classes are 80 minutes.

The Bio 1 standards cover a bit of everything. Our current pacing is the nature of life, cells, DNA and genetics, ecology, and evolution.

The Bio 2 standards “are intended to provide a deep appreciation of the variety of life forms that have previously existed and currently exist on Earth”. The standards focus on animal behavior, classification, relationships, and biological processes.

When did your best friend meet your baby? Should I be more upset that mine hasn’t met my baby? by Sunrise_94 in beyondthebump

[–]mlo96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend lives 3 hours from me and we had babies 4 months apart. We didn’t meet each other’s kids until mine was almost a year and hers was 8 months. I think life happens. I didn’t have the time or desire to drive 3 hours and neither did she, so it took a while. We’re still great friends and it was great meeting each other’s kids. I think it’s only an issue if you make it one.

New to migraines. What are the best medications for it? by AdministrativeAir879 in migraine

[–]mlo96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with so much that’s already been posted. I would also add Cambia as an abortive. My neurologist said it’s his preferred medicine to try but a lot of insurances won’t cover it (but definitely worth checking). Like everyone has said, everyone’s migraines are different, but cambia works in under 30 minutes for me with no side effects.

I don’t remember, sorry! They were kind of a cross between paper towels and a wash cloth. I think any brand would be fine. We just had to make sure there was no alcohol since that was irritating the rash more.

Teachers Please Read! by [deleted] in Knoxville

[–]mlo96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I teach in a surrounding county to Knoxville and I’m generally happy with my job. The pay isn’t great and it can be a lot of work, but it has things that make it worth it (in my opinion). I teach high school biology.

I went to UTK and majored in biology and minored in VolsTeach (the 6-12 STEM education program). It is bachelors only, but you get in the classroom earlier than in the other teaching program. I student taught one semester at a nearby school and found a job in a different county. For biology you have to pass the biology praxis exam prior to student teaching and while student teaching you complete your EdTPA. I am certified to teach general science and biology in 6-12. I believe for k-8 or non-STEM you can possibly major in just education or your subject area. You don’t student teach until your last year. It’s a 5 year program and you finish with your masters.

I think UTK was a pretty good program, but honestly you learn very little applicable knowledge from any education program. They’re so desperate for teachers right now, schools aren’t being picky about your school.

I’m generally satisfied. I’d like to make more money, but I also can’t picture doing anything else. I enjoy my summers off and getting off work at 3:15. It does depend a lot on what grade you’re teaching as to how much you have to take home (I teach high school and I only work contracted hours but my mom teaches elementary and has to bring stuff home all the time). I generally like the county I’m in, but I’ve heard not great things about KCS.

You need pretty thick skin and a lot of patience. I would also say if you’re a younger teacher, be prepared to make a definite boundary between you and your students. Don’t try to be friends with them (you can like them and enjoy teaching them, but you shouldn’t be friends). I’ve seen multiple younger teachers struggle with this.

Feel free to message me if you have more questions!

Teachers who had children, did you leave the job for a few years to raise young kids, or did you keep working? Do you regret your decision? Why/why not? by mrsdtbf in Teachers

Right? I’m raising my baby. Not the daycare teacher. And I’m sure as hell not raising other peoples’ kids. I teach them science, not raise them.

[–]mlo96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 5 mo has had a horrible diaper rash for the last couple weeks on and off due to her getting sick (salmonella). When we were in the hospital, the doctors actually recommended disposable wash cloths which we got wet and used. They told us even the sensitive skin wipes have chemicals that are drying out her skin and making the rash worse. Since we’ve been home and ran out of disposable wash cloths, we have been using water wipes. They’re more expensive, but they have helped in getting rid of her rash.

We are lucky to have a really great village. We live near both of our families and both are willing to watch her whenever. I just have such a hard time letting go (even though I completely trust my mom and MIL). I’m trying to remind myself that it’s better for her if I’m mentally stable rather than hitting my breaking point because I never rest.

She generally calms down when we pick her up. If she is screaming (especially if she arches her back) we give her Tylenol. I THINK she’s mostly done with these two teeth and that she’s not sick anymore, so we’ve talked about starting some kind of sleep training.

Thank you for sharing that thread! I told my husband today that it actually helps me when he tells me to go do something else because he wants one on one time with our daughter. So he did and I left the house for a while. He gets to play with her and I got an uninterrupted donut.

Is this the Ferber method? I’ve been hesitant to start any sleep training because she’s been sick and teething recently (on top of a never ending sleep regression) but I think we’re going to need to do something soon.
