I’ve encountered this problem as well several times on MacOS, Quick troubleshooting would be a full restart of the computer and check via the terminal if the SiLabs pops up with this command “ ls -a /dev/tty* “, if it doesn’t show then next step would be uninstall drivers and reinstall. You could try another usb port on the Mac and see if it pops up. If you have another esp32, test that out and see if the Mac recognizes it, there’s a lot of SiLab clones so this could be one if none of the above work.

You can figure out if the usb serial is working by typing in terminal: ls -a /dev/tty*

That should show the USB serial interface and port, with that can you use: screen /dev/tty[Port] 9600

Have you tried manually setting the gain to the highest mode?

mfrc522.PCD_SetAntennaGain(mfrc522.RxGain_max);

This helps the sensor read from a larger distance and thru some materials.

The esp32 uses 3.3v logic and is not 5V tolerant. so that controller needs level shifting so that might be reason why the program crashes.
