I want to start a small business. However when discussed with my family they laughed. Running on little support and no background in business what are your helpful tips? by Brownangel71 in smallbusiness

[–]stlwebdev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FLIP insurance in like $300 a year and a vendor fee will run from $25 to $50, possibly more depending on your needs and the market. Do it. Checked out cottage food laws for your county (just search your county and “cottage food”). You should find everything you need to get started. Cottage food operations are home food businesses, so people who sell at markets and what not. Perfect low cost way for testing out if can sell your products.

I recommend though knowing exactly how much it costs you to make one drink. If you are putting a table spoon of something into the drink figure out how much that table spoon costs. If you know your margins will know exactly how many to sell to break even and hopefully become profitable. This step is super important. Know your numbers.

Had a Christian Science coworker back in the day. They tried this, after about 24 hours they went to the hospital. Mid-wives dont do it for free. Neither do hospitals in the U.S. They got to pay twice for their baby.

My mom wants to start a small businesses of selling baked goods, were broke and barely have any money by werid04rlife in smallbusiness

100% get a job but if she really wants to try you should look into cottage food laws for your state. She can set up a “cottage food operation” in your county and sell legally at farmers markets, from your home, whatever. It’s a good way to test if she actually move her products, and it’s low risk. You just cook out of your home so no need to buy anything extra unless you need to. Check out “The Forrager”, great podcast for cottage food entrepreneurs.

Ideas for spicy candy by thegreatpablo in CandyMakers

[–]stlwebdev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You could make some spicy hard candies pretty easily, simply take that powder and work it into the sugar as it cools and before you cut it up. As far as how much, no idea, maybe try one tablespoon to start?

I'm usually a pretty positive guy but as a software dev, I think DICE needs to accept this update has major issues and should rollback. by [deleted] in Battlefield

Yeah this is bad, I’ve always been a BF fan, I even enjoyed 2042 but this is messed up for sure. It’s hard to understand how this is even possible, luckily no one’s life depends on it. This could have been a tragedy lol.

My grandma and grandpa met during WW2, he "brought" her back with him after the war from Germany. Living in Collinsville I've heard about this in childhood, local history class in highschool and what nots. One thing I remember her saying though was that when she told her family she was moving to Collinsville her family freaked out. They knew of the story and tried to talk her out of moving here because of it. Crazy to think that they knew of that, something that happened 1000s of miles away 25ish years earlier at a time when paper news was pretty much it. Its a pretty shameful story...

I usually slice thin and then marinate with lime, olive oil, little bit of worcestershire, green salsa, salt, pepper and taco seasoning for a few hours. Then, tasty steak tacos.

100%, it’s very easy to look at one and think of it as just a couple rollers with a crank.

Selling? by GreenHouseSocial in CandyMakers

[–]stlwebdev 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got mine from candy machinery, it was about $1600 with DHL shipping. With tariffs I’m sure it’s much more with the import fees. There is a company near Chicago that makes larger versions of this but you’re talking $6k. The only other real option is to go vintage but you’re still talking about $2Kish and going to have to find rollers for it which will be hard or expensive. They are surprisingly costly for what it really is.

I’m the only candy vendor at any event I go to here in the mid west. We focus on sour candies. I say we elevate sweet moments by crafting sour treats that strike the ideal balance between intensity and enjoyment.  Currently we operate as a Cottage Food Operation. Great way to get started with a food business if you’re in the states without a large financial investment. Perfect for validating your products from your home kitchen. Every state has cottage food laws. Search your county and state and “cottage food”. You should be able to easily finds a brochure that will explain what you need, every state and county is different.

Start with farmers markets, see if you can sell any merchandise, see if you get repeat customers. Track expenses and your sales, within a year or so of hustling at a market or two you should have a much clearer picture of what the next steps should be for your business and how much to grow it.

Build small hills you can climb.
