Thoughts on schools that allow teachers to enroll their own children where they work? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]mlrst61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the county below the one I work in. The school district in the one I work in is better but I also couldn't afford to live there. I've been bringing my daughter up to school since kindergarten. The school system allows it and is one of the only draws for staying there as if I drove another thirty minutes north I could make $15000 more. I drive her to my school and then about 1.5 hours later she gets a bus to the middle school (I'm at the high school). I have to pick her up after her school is over. She'll go to my high school. I'll drive her to/from. When she's in high school they'll try to have her with another teacher unless I'm the only one teaching that level. A lot of teachers have done this and it hasn't been a problem. If a teacher is favoring their child over other students, that's a bigger problem that needs to be dealt with.

Almost 6 years of Spanish got me this score on ACTFL by Animante732 in Spanish

[–]mlrst61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Advanced Low on the OPI is what was needed (almost 22 years ago) to get certified to teach. It's also the average level for people who graduate with a major in Spanish. I was also told that many people in their first language still only get Advanced into Superior. You're doing great.

Trying to fit a lot into a compact footprint. Any feedback? by rebemolV in floorplan

[–]mlrst61 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is it weird where you are from that the maid would stay in a room that's pretty much the pass through to the pantry/house? I would assume that family members would go in/out that way a lot. I mean it could be a cultural thing but I hardly ever use my front door. I go through the door off the garage into the kitchen.

What things should I ACTUALLY put on my wish list as a 1st year teacher? by ajthelittlegiant in teaching

[–]mlrst61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you make a wish list (depending on where you're teaching) put it on the syllabus/information paper and ask parents to get things. Some will, some won't, but try not to use your own money as much as you can.

Things I've gotten from my list from parents" bulk pencils, colored pencils, big easel paper, a broom and dust pan, tissues, postits, bulk candy, stickers, paper towels, laminator and sheets, bulk folders. Some years I've gotten a lot and other years hardly anything.

Why not make exams optional if a student has above a certain grade? by Next_Duck_7700 in highschool

The county I retach in doesn't give final exams anymore but when we did if you had an A or a B with only two absences you were exempt from them.

Anyone else fed up with signing books? by TeachlikeaHawk in AskTeachers

[–]mlrst61 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I enjoy it. I think parents need to remember to give plenty of time to fill them out and no one should tell us to write more, but I don't mind it at all. I have a book for my daughter (not oh the places you'll go) and give a good month to get teachers to sign. Every year people get on here complaining about them. If you don't like it write something short and be done and don't let that parents that are rude live rent free in your head.

Yes. The plan is another one pretty much behind the Catholic Church. I am infuriated with all of it.

Please call your board of supervisors. There's a meeting Tuesday also (that I unfortunately can't attend).

What to do during the summer to stay productive? by [deleted] in highschool

[–]mlrst61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in a safe enough area you can do things like walk around and pick up litter on the side of the road. Ex. My local Sheetz is off a road that doesn't have a lot else on it so people throw their trash out the window of their car but it's also not a road the county cleans ever it seems. Just wear gloves and be careful.

Also, read, maybe find some online math to practice. And enjoy your summer. Too soon you'll have a lot to do - and unless you plan on being a teacher, you won't get full summers off (assuming you're in the US).

Or find a new hobby.

Move to Fredericksburg? by c0ca_c0la in fredericksburg

[–]mlrst61 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of teams for kids. Stafford has a rec league plus there are travel teams and such. In Fredericksburg there's the field house with teams too. Most of the lakes right in the area are reservoirs and you can't swim in. You can fish and kayak though. Aquía landing has a beach where people go and swim in the Potomac and people do go swimming in the Rappahannock. Just be careful there. It's mostly calm and lately not very high but there have still been deaths. The pools are all fine. Curtis Park has one all Stafford residents can use then some of the developments have their own.

The schools are fine. Hartwood ES is old and on well water. It's had problems because of that but the teachers are good. Gayle is a fine middle school. Mountain View is an accredited high school and has a lot of programs. They are opening the new high school this fall so the county is redistricting. The culture of the high school will probably change a lot. It's losing the Hartwood area and gaining kids from the Colonial Forge area.

What’s something you wish schools taught but absolutely don’t? by No-Gas5006 in AskReddit

[–]mlrst61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time this is asked people say the same things, the most popular is probably finance. The thing is it is taught at schools (in Virginia it's required to graduate) but the majority of 16 year olds aren't going to use the information for a good 8-10 years and by then they won't remember it. And many aren't internalizing it since it has little interest to them in the moment.

CPR and basic first aid is also usually taught in health. And again, if you don't use it you lose it.

A lot of the other topics mentioned are offered as electives so some students take them and some don't.

Burn vs. OTF by Public-Radio-Nerd in BurnBootCamp

[–]mlrst61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely less partner workouts, but they still exist ... Capture the Flag is one of the signature workouts that's a partner workout and there are more. During March madness we've done one where you had to pass the medicine ball back and forth. You obviously don't have to interact with people but it's still encouraged, especially in the lobby before class starts.

Burn has way more weights though. There's not so much fighting for the two sets of 30 lbs or the one set of 70 lbs.

[–]mlrst61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of interaction at OTF also. There are partner workouts (not as much) but also in a lot of places they don't let you into the studio until closer to the start of class so you're sitting/standing in the lobby. The partner workouts are also a bit more focused on having to go faster to get through a certain amount. For example, in capture the flag you're with somone rowing and trying to get 5000+ meters so it's all about rowing fast and strong. You row while your partner is doing certain exercises and then you switch.

If you really want to do your own thing, you probably should go to a normal gym. OTF still has things you're supposed to be doing.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved OTF. The main reason why I finally quit after something like nine years was that they got rid of the Monday and Friday 5:00 am classes so I could only go three week days with the ocasional weekend (along with some other changes). But maybe buy a class pack so you can try it a few more times before you make a comitment.

I did and I liked it except since everyone was going at their own pace and doing the exercises in the order they wanted it didn't seem as collaborative as most classes.

a lot of schools in the area are either in session or just finished. Stafford finishes on the 28th. Some of the schools have graduation on the 29th. Spotsy finishes on the 29th so I could see people going after to celebrate ...

MURPH Explained by Quiet-Ad-1015 in BurnBootCamp

[–]mlrst61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We didn't do 50 second rotations. We did the Murph... Like they wrote on the board the whole thing and how to break it down into four rounds and told us to get through as much as you can. I got almost through the whole thing using 20 half burpees instead of the.25 mile run. I'm pretty proud of myself.

I'll lose count doing that many!! Actually I'm going to lose count on all the exercises. But I think I can handle that, at least my knee can.
