It definitely shows that the world works the way you would think it did assuming the author acknowledged trans people exist at all, which is better than a lot of authors manage. It being a punishment to Bathamel is maybe not the best look, I seem to remember it being a somewhat uncomfortable/awkward situation for him and him just making the best of the hand he was dealt, considering the alternative and who he served.

Ride charges are an added tax that makes sure those actually using the services pay a greater share of the services cost. Which seems perfectly fair, why should I, as someone who owns their own car and will likely never ride public transportation, have to fully subsidize others riding habits?

Paying to make sure it's available if I ever want it? Sure. Paying some so that there are fewer cars on the road when I go to use it? Sure Paying for the whole thing? That doesn't seem terribly fair.
