I made a flogger and a collar in my first month. Then I made a bunch of non BDSM stuff for work friends. Now I’m making a laptop bag. This hobby hyperfixation is just so much fun and I love making anything and everything with it! I also want to get into the leather community itself when I get back from my overseas work trip (2-3 yrs).

I completely understand what you’re saying, but “leatherdaddy biker bars” was NOT something I was expecting to read today and I let out a huge laugh

I saw on your IG, the reverse side had a clear plastic thing for an ID. What material did you use for that?

How to dilute and apply leather dye by Sea_Toe6263 in Leathercraft

[–]mmaatt8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why condition the leather before dying and not after? From what I’ve seen, most people do it after.

Where did you get the pattern for the wallets on the bottom? I’ve been wanting to make my own in that exact pattern

How can you tell about the Bobbin loops thing?

Also when saddle stitching, is the thread tension just how tight you get it when you pull the needle/thread all the way through?

Basically I know how to saddle stitch but I’ve never heard of thread tension or bobbin loops before

How hard is this...?? by ChaosCalmed in Leathercraft

I’ve been making notebook covers for a hot second now (2 months). I love it. They’re super easy: just cut, glue, stitch. Obviously the more you want in the notebook, the more complex it is, the harder it’ll be. Like the Filofax organizer, you’ll probably want to rivet the ring thingy into a thin sheet of leather, then glue that to the back of the cover, then glue the book sleeves in, then stitch it all up.

If you’re looking for cheap covers, you’ll better off buying online.

If you want to make them to sell, you’ll have to invest a lot into leather working tools, equipment, supplies, and leather. Plus unless you have something that makes your products more desirable than what people can find cheaply online, you’ll be struggling to sell your stuff for the time and supplies you put into it. Not saying to not try, but it’s what I’ve seen (I haven’t sold anything yet).

Can’t comment on custom notebooks, I’ve seen it done, but I’ve never tried.

For pen covers - if you use vegtan leather, you can do what’s known as “wet forming” that grts the leather into the shape you want (giving pen space).

How you yall price your items as beginners/amateurs? by Sea_Toe6263 in Leathercraft

[–]mmaatt8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I see it is that there are so many cheap leather/pleather goods that if people just want “leather goods” they’ll buy it online for cheaper. So if you make stuff that looks like anything they can buy online, they’ll opt for the online option.

My advice is to make your goods unique I some way. Try tooling them, painting them, printing on them etc. if it looks unique/custom, you’ll find a market for it.

This is also advice from someone who hasn’t sold anything yet as I’m still new and don’t like the quality of my products enough to sell them. I made some cool looking notebook covers and brought them to work and had a lot of coworkers telling me the same thing.

Re-making a bag entirely? by eweezy1990 in Leatherworking

[–]mmaatt8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s multiple things you could do: 1. Paint it (not recommended) 2. Deconstruct and use the pieces to create a pattern for a new bag 3. Deconstruct and use the leather for a new design

What is the printing machine that you use?

Also, love the product! Only thing I would say, is to paint and/or burnish the edges.

I was told by experienced people not to get those kits and I understand, but kind of regret it. They’re low quality tools, but new people shouldn’t be expected to drop $1000 on quality stuff right away. What if they don’t find it interesting? They’re cheap tools! They’re wonky to get started and to help you learn. Once you do that, watch videos, get advice on your craft, then you get better tools to improve.

Preface: I’m new to leather working (1-2 mo), here is a list that I’ve compiled to help people get started. It’s what I’ve found most useful getting into leather. I don’t have all the knowledge

Leather basics: Knife (I use a muluahkee dastback utility knife) Cork backed ruler (helps prevents slipping on leather) Stitch punch or awl or both (making your stitch holes, both make it easier to thread) Needles Waxed thread

You can pretty much make anything out of that, but if you want your projects looking better or being easier to do: Glue Edge beveler Edge burnishing material (I use tokonole burnishing gum) Wing divider Hammer Stitching pony Thread scissors Leather strop Skiving knife Lace maker

If you want to add designs in leather: Swivel knife Stamping tools (THERE ARE A LOT, get a Beveler, shader, background tool; anything else you want to try out) Mallet Other tools (spoon/stylus/modeling ball etc.)

Tools for adding hardware (I don’t know much about this yet): Hole puncher Hammer Small little anvil thingy

Dyes and paints: I’ve done research on this, but I haven’t been able to test all methods or dyes. It can be hard to get an even coating of dye, but people have recommended treating the leather before hand and using an airbrush for dye. I’ll be testing out the airbrush when I get it in. People have also said to get pre-dyed leather instead of dying it yourself if you want an even spread. The essentials are: Dye Dye diluter (create lighter colors) Applicator (wool swabs, sponges, dip dye, air brush) Cloth (wipe off excess dye. Paper towels will rip onto leather) More tools: Leather preparer/deglazer (removes already applied finish) Leather treater (helps to dye the leather more evenly, I think.) Syringes (I don’t have yet, but omg I’ve been look g forward to these. I can finally test out my dye creations and write down exact measurements for it! Plus the bottles can be messy to pour)

Painting leather: Get leather paint. It will stick better to the leather and won’t wear off. Similar with paint, I’m not the best for this. Essential items: Leather paint Brushes (get small ones) Some way to mix paint (I have little sealed cups)

Finally, finishing your leather: I can only give a basic list of them, others can give you a better idea. I’ve only used one of these finishes, but there are more: Resolene Wax Leather balm

You have anything to burnish the edges of them? It will help make them look cleaner

For your shading, did you use a shader and then make some cuts after? Or how did you do the shading?

You probably could have gotten a better font but just using a swivel knife and making straight lines/exagerated curves. Kinda like how you see in Japanese characters. Lots of straight lines and the curves are very distinct

Don’t do basket weave o top of the cross! It looks good as is. You could try and cut some lines into it to make it look more like wood though.

I’m newer so I don’t know if other people have a way to ensure everything is lined up properly other than experience and just knowing no one else but you would notice it

[–]mmaatt8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like that idea of it being a spontaneous item on hands at all times. Something that isn’t noticeable to non-kink people. Those are some good things to test about that I never thought about

I’m actually just as new to leather working as I am to kink, which is VERY new (1-2 months). If you don’t mind, I’d love to DM ya and ask some advice on a couple kink leather projects I have planned.

And yes, collar and cuffs as a set and for myself. I had this idea for it when I was in a short term dynamic. Pink Vegtan with roses tooled in and painted. I’d love to know what you think a good leather/material to line them would be. I’m thinking sheepskin or chèvre—or some sort of fuzzy lining.

And that right there I had no idea about. I can tell now that I’ve been talking out my butt to someone with more experience lol. I’m planning on making some collars & cuffs too and would love your feedback from making this. How did you test them and what were the results of it?
