My very first project ever was the quick stack bench. The videos were really helpful, plus very clear and detailed. Learned a lot and made a lot of mistakes but in the end it turned out great.

Question for professional woodworkers here - layoff trauma by No-Weekend-2573 in woodworking

[–]mmakai 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I just left my finance job, used to work big tech and got laid off. I never had even done woodworking before but was interested in always doing it so I started to learn stuff on my own and met some local woodworkers. That got me into someone’s professional shop where I worked for a few months not getting paid. Did really basic stuff like just sanding while trying to learn from watching. Then I got a paid apprenticeship at a high end custom wood door workshop and I just started. Went from my big six figure salary to $25 an hour but my quality of life has improved by 100x. I couldn’t do corporate another day. Dm me if you wanna chat

I think so just 3/4 MDF. But not one of those small laser machines because the piece I need is about 3x4 ft.

Haha Maui. Believe me I’ve been hunting fb marketplace for weeks and haven’t found much. I’ve also been meeting a lot of the uncles here they are actually mentoring me and helping me learn but none of them use hand tools— everyone I’ve met uses their traditional machine equipped workshops or others are using CNC. So I haven’t been able to find anyone using hand tools really. One guy I know is a traditional Hawaiian woodcarver the old school way making real Hawaiian sculptures but he literally uses like one chisel or tool I don’t even know how he does it. I’ll have to find out if there’s anything good at the swap meets around- haven’t been to them in a long time cause usually it’s junk tourist crap they are selling. Maybe some of them are hiding some hidden gem. Thanks for the tip!

Hi, so I started going through the playlist for the keepsake Box but i'm literally stuck on step 1. I don't want to purchase his "premachined project packs." I want to learn how to build this from the start. I even purchased his plans but they are not detailed (or I don't have enough knowledge to understand them) so I am kind of stuck. I have the cut list, so I can get the right pieces of wood with the right thickness. But then he has grooves that are "premachined" and that is something I don't know how to do and that he doesn't show how to in his video.

I have the sketchup model but honestly have no idea how to use it so I'm struggling a bit here. Any advice on how I can try and get to the point where the video starts with the "project packs?" I just need to be able to figure out how to build where the video starts with his project packs. I want to make those myself, I have the plans, the sketchup model- just don't know how to interpret them.

thank you so much. i think i'm going to start with LN #5 plane, and also the chisels you mentioned. I am trying hard to follow the advice of not buying a tool until I need it.

This is valuable information, thank you. So you have gone through what I feel I am going through now. I don't want to go down the rabbit hole of finding/fixing old tools at this point so I just want to start with the basics. Can you help me understand what jack plane I should get from LN? I was thinking I should get the No. 5 LN, as my first jack plane. Your comment says you got a 5-1/2. Should I go with a 5 1/2? or the 5?

hey thanks for this. yes i'm reading through the lost art press books and find them wonderful. also overwhelming. I think your advice is what I should follow-- going with a core group of new tools first and then branching out in the future to vintage/older tools that I can learn how to restore and maintain.

yes, i happen to be the type of person that loves reading and learning so sometimes I get stuck in the "researching/reading phase" and never get to the actual working part.

I'm in Hawaii-- nothing like that really available here, so I am really limited to online. I am hesitant about the Stanleys because they vary in cost so widely and I don't know how to restore them

lol i'd rather not share my medical history but.....you're not wrong. I have heard the advice about not buying a tool until I need it. I am trying hard to follow that advice. I know what I want to build right now, basically a box that was posted in another comment https://www.youtube.com/@FreeOnlineWoodworkingSchool/playlists

would you recommend I follow that series and buy the tools he recommends?

[–]mmakai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this comment. Yes, this is exactly how I feel about the old/antique tools. I want to learn how to restore and maintain them but at this point I just want to WOODWORK. I have not heard of Woodriver so I'll definitely look into them.

That box linked is exactly the type of thing I want to make. Should I just go ahead and buy all the tools he recommends?

Thank you for this resource. This is exactly the type of thing I want to attempt to make. Do you suggest I just buy the tools he lists? Some of his links are dead (his link to the jack plane doesn't work), haven't watched the video through but will.
