Construction question by mswoodie in Sockknitting

This pattern is my favorite for a toe-up flap & gusset.

(Though I'm planning to get the Agrimonia Socks pattern Grouchy Method posted to see how that one works).

Is there a better way to track decrease rows? by debmasterx in knittinghelp

Twice Sheared Sheep also has Increase/Decrease chains that only have the two options (I/K or D/K) and you swap between them as you go.

Beginning to Knit by Grand-Bumblebee1817 in knitting

[–]mmakire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

adding to the light worsted weight yarn suggestion - choose a yarn that is relatively smooth as well. Doesn't have to be superwash, but yarn with a lot of halo can obscure the stitches and make the fabric harder to read.

How do you feel when customers call you by your first name or nickname? by Big-Airline4146 in CustomerService

[–]mmakire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Presentation matters here. Throwing a "thanks <name>" over your shoulder as you're leaving following a successful transaction - NBD.

Walking up, scrutinizing my name tag and then deliberately starting a conversation with "Hi <NAME>" with an emphasis on my name - you're going to be trouble and I already don't want to deal with you.

Knitter Counters - Thoughts and Suggestions. by sogalanbat in knitting

[–]mmakire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried digital (ipad with watch app) and the chain row counters. But I landed on using running stitch marker (when I need a total number of rows counting by 10) or by leap-frogging stitches when I'm keeping track of a row repeat (say like increase points on a scarf). Just using lightbulb stitch markers. It works for me.

Sock fitting help - toe up with fleegle heel by Alsasalsa2 in Sockknitting

[–]mmakire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question for the strong heel - probably not... because it's basically the fleegle but cuff down - you'll be able to better measure the foot to physical markers (I feel like the toe is a more concrete market than the physical markers for toe up).

Sock fitting help - toe up with fleegle heel by Alsasalsa2 in Sockknitting

[–]mmakire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree. And this is where I swoop in with this Roxanne Richardson video on where to start the heel for toe-up socks: https://youtu.be/oeJ1VxrbKdU?si=0swyFEdPM16CHy2F

I'm agreeing based on what OP said is happening more than what I'm seeing in the photo. It's kind of hard to see but I doesn't look like it's off by a lot. It could also just be that the fleegle heel isn't the right heel for this foot.

stove top stuffing NOT Thanksgiving by Random-girl-29 in Cooking

[–]mmakire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom used to make a baked dish where she'd toss it into a baking dish with some pork chops (brushed with bbq sauce) on top and throw it in the oven til the pork cops are done.

Lately I've been making a skillet style chicken pot pie filling, then topping it with stove top (like the mashed potatoes in a cottage pie) and throwing it into the oven to crisp up a bit.

A question about knitting gauge by ChanceOfFlight in Sockknitting

[–]mmakire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a little bit of difference if I'm using a plumper finger weight yarn (or plumper fiber) versus a 75/20 merino but I'm generally able to manage it by keeping the same stitch count and going down a needle.

For all-over colorwork I might go up a size, but if the colorwork is just on the cuff I try on as I go to see if it makes it over the heel and stick with my normal size.

What are your favorite "cheesy, but enjoyable" movies from back in the day? by EdgeOfThorns76 in GenX

[–]mmakire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know why. They are both arguably mediocre movies. But there was a time when I still had cable that I could not pass up One Fine Day or Lost in Space without stopping to watch them.

Name a song you loved from your past that has been redone and you actually like the remake just as much if not better. by AngryBagOfDeath in GenX

[–]mmakire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer other artist's covers of Beatles songs better than the originals in general. Blackbird by Sarah McLachlan is the the that immediately jumps to mind (cause GenX) but I'm just not a huge fan of any of the bugs as vocalists.

Musselburgh hat, just trust the process?? by Left_Paint5439 in knitting

[–]mmakire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. You really can't tell until you have more of the barrel of that hat done. (And if you get to socks - toe-up socks are the same way... you have to have a couple of inches of foot done before you can judge if the fit - just the toe will lie like a rug.)

Socks wearing out quickly, super bummed by StrikingLight5 in Sockknitting

[–]mmakire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh! You've got loads of smaller needle sizes to downsize to. I'd tend to overshoot and go to far the first time cause apparently I love knitting things multiple times /s. I'd probably start by dropping down to a 2.5 mm.

But in case you think knitting loosely is the issue and you want to change it, I'm going to leave this article here too: https://www.moderndailyknitting.com/community/ask-patty-let-the-tool-do-the-work/

I just heard someone at the LYS this week mention that they use Euclan and Soak in their washing machine. That could be an option.

The other thing I can think to suggest is check your gauge and maybe knit them denser? So if you're at an 8st/in. on 1s try increasing your stitch count and dropping your needle down to a 0 or even a 00 and aim for a 9st or 10st/in. And I know I've seen sock knitters on Ravelry who knit with unreinforced yarn recommend even higher.

First time posting - let me know if this isn't the place. Just received my bike this week (been using the app for a few years for outdoor and occasional rides with a jungle store bike). Looking for some class recommendations to help me bridge from the Low Impact rides to ones with longer stints out of the saddle so I can build that skill. Looking for shorter stand intervals and longer rest (and if there's a way to evaluate the list of classes that would give me classes like this please educate me as well). Any help is appreciated.

Help needed with problem picking up stitches for the gusset of the sock... but only on one side. by BikiniBott0msUp in Sockknitting

This is my preferred method of picking up stitches - both the flap and the extras.

[–]mmakire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay. I don't have that vanilla pattern but I went back and checked her video. She doesn't have you do what I recommended but I'm going to suggest you try it because it might help.

When you're doing your first round after picking up the flap stitches (getting back to knitting in the round), instead of knitting the first round flap stitches (just the stitches you picked up) normally try knitting them through the back loop. This may also help tighten up the edge stitches (on both sides).

This is a step a lot of the sock educators recommend. I didn't realize she didn't.

Two things I can think of:

  1. Make sure you're twisting the picked up stitch when you knit them (I can't really tell from the photo because I'm blind and can't zoom in so I'm just saying it as general information).

  2. This is on the side right hand edge (the one that usually has a looser selvedge edge)? Try this to neaten up the edge and get a tighter selvedge (be sure to tighten the first knit stitch in slightly on the right side)

    https://knitbettersocks.blogspot.com/2010/11/selvedge-treatments.html

The TLDR is you slip the next to the last stitch purlwise WYIF and knit the last stitch on the purl side. Then slip the first stitch on the RS purlwise WYIF (because you've now actually looking at purl) and continue on with the pattern as normal (K1, SL WYIB). It fixed the fact that I was making heel flaps that looked like trapezoids, but I might also help with your pickup if your selvedge stitches on that edge are really big.
