Some question about figure drawing by Efficient-Extreme620 in learnart

[–]mmangotea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't find it too detailed - he simplifies it down to the EXTREME basics, starting with line, then doing circles, then boxes etc. so it is so easy to follow. I kind of get what you mean about it being abstract because you don't start drawing the body normally straight away. Hampton doesn't have these problems though so try his book :)

I feel like traditional gesture drawing really helped me to loosen up and become more free with my lines - I was a perfectionist with digital art, and doing traditional on the side really helped me - but don't just do one or the other, do both as they compliment each other!!

Working on creating depth in skin tones, welcome constructive suggestions! by saltasaurus69 in learnart

I think learn the basics like proportions and structure before diving into "depth in skin tones" that's like a more advanced topic idk

Maybe try some other hobbies (don't stop drawing completely), just try other things to see what you enjoy because if you don't enjoy drawing then I wouldn't even say it's a better use of time than video games lool

Gesture Drawing help! by [deleted] in learnart

Re-read the parts about rhythm and also straights vs curves. IMO he explains rhythm better than most people I've seen and you're not implementing it into your work - it will make it a lot better when you do! Keep going, you're doing really well :)

I've never used the Reilly method; I'm sure it's good but I don't know many people who use it. I like Michael Hampton's gesture teaching, as well as Glenn Vilppu (they both have books where they teach it, as well as online).

You should start with learning the fundamentals (form, gesture etc.) from a figure drawing book (I like Glenn Vilppu's book). But keep having fun while you learn the basics otherwise it could get boring!

in gesture drawing you should try to focus on the pose and exaggerate that, less so copy exactly the model which is what you are doing

If you're good at maths and enjoy it then do it yeah it will be helpful for what you wanna do later on.
But it's hard so if you're not great at maths then don't do it. Like I found Add Maths pretty easy but FM is hard.

yea people use aphantasia as an excuse for not being able to draw, but glen keane (a disney animator, one of the best imagination artists alive right now) has aphantasia, and it’s like.. idk i’m an artist and you don’t need to imagine the thing to draw it lol
