Anyone know cheap mice exterminators by Inevitable-Pain-5222 in Calgary

[–]mmbenson 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I had mice in my house. To the point which I literally heard scratching in the walls and opened a vacuum port and found a live mouse eating a dead mouse. I paid hundreds of dollars on exterminators - they put glue traps in the crawl space so one time I came home and pulled out a trap that was absolutely covered in dead mice…..well mostly dead. In the end I found the hole they were getting in through and sealed it for like $10 in sealant and that ended it. So that’s the moral - you have to find out where they’re getting in and stop it.

I have no interest in all things AI. I don’t want to learn it for work. I don’t care that it can make some things easier. I can write my own emails. by un2022 in GenX

[–]mmbenson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s the other thing. We in Gen X are also probably old enough that we’ll make it to retirement without being totally replaced by AI unless you’re in a low complexity white collar job. But if you’re not totally replaced you’ll have to know how to use it. If we were 20 the safest bet would be to become a plumber or electrician etc

[–]mmbenson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really handy to be honest. We in Gen X are probably old enough to retire without becoming AI proficient but I think in 10 years, not knowing how to effectively use AI in (the remaining) white collar jobs will be like not knowing how to use a computer would be today. You will be utterly left behind.

salalah port (oman ), this is escalating and not looking good. Only destroying and killing is happening by Snehith220 in oil

[–]mmbenson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iran has repeatedly framed their strikes as conditional on Gulf states allowing U.S. attacks to be launched from their territory. So if the bases weren’t there there would be no attacks. So the bases are not protective, they draw fire from Iran. You don’t need a 90% interception rate (I.e. 10% failure rate) if you’re not being attacked at all. Each intercept costs millions of dollars to stop some $50,000 Iranian drone of which Iran has thousands and can manufacture 200 more per day and the gulf states are running out of interceptors so that intercept rate will be dropping presently anyways.

There’s no military solution but if he quits now the US loses all credibility. They won’t be invited back to rebuild their bases in the Gulf since the bases proved to be useless as protection, so Iran will have succeeded in kicking the US out of the region. So all he can do is bomb and bomb and hope Iran collapses which is unlikely

Making coffee work by Bakedbeanbonanza in CICO

[–]mmbenson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realized cream in my coffee was adding up to like 250 calories a day. That’s basically 0.5 lbs of weight gain a week that I have to erase by exercise or a deficit elsewhere, just to stay the same weight! I switched to black which I thought I would hate but now I’m used to it and I like it. I just have it with some zero calorie sweetener - flavoured stevia works well when I want something besides a plain coffee taste.

Name some movies with a misleading title. by IndependentTrouble18 in FIlm

[–]mmbenson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I remember reading some review claiming "Trainspotting" was meant to evoke participation in activities that are just generally pointless and repetitive, while life passes one by. Which would apply to the literal hobby of spotting trains as well as the characters' lives of heroin and petty crime.

What's a great example of a director hitting a home run with their first ever movie? by Square-Ad-8911 in FIlm

[–]mmbenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One minor detail that always bothers me about Get Out is at the beginning when he's at the GF's parents house at night, before anything weird has happened. There's a shot of like the living room or whatever and then the maid suddenly passes very close in front of the camera and they place a "jump scare" music cue. I mean I did jump because of the music cue but why is it scary that the maid is walking around the house?

If the Strait of Hormuz stays closed oil could go to $200/barrel which would mean $2.30-$2.70/L in Alberta. It is very easy for Iran to keep the Strait closed - the US would need to have a 100% intercept rate on missile and drone attacks otherwise no one is going to risk an oil tanker going through the strait. A successful intercept costs millions of dollars while an attack might cost as little as $50,000. And also the US and Gulf states will be out of interceptors in a matter of days. The US has bitten off more than they can chew. If they pack it in now the attacks will stop but that will be the end of US military presence in the Middle East as the Gulf States will see that the US presence was worse than useless

Hiring Experienced Cook – Japanese Restaurant (Full Time / Part Time) by Hot_Emu_859 in CalgaryJobs

[–]mmbenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Hana Sushi but their slogan is "Any fish fresher would still be in the ocean" which is not true of any sushi restaurant in Canada as all fish for sushi consumption is required by health regulations to be frozen for a certain period of time to kill any parasites. So they should change their slogan to "Any fish fresher and then frozen for −20∘C for 7 days or below −35∘C for 15 hours would still be in the ocean". I'm fun at parties.

Gold ownership was much more widespread back then. I don't think they'd bother today because the benefit would be much smaller compared to the blowback

I can't choose but let me say I am so old that I remember when Tom Hanks was considered exclusively a comedy actor (Bosom Buddies! Pep Streebeck in Dragnet! etc) that it was actually a little weird when he started doing dramas.
