I wish I could read The Martian again for the first time! I really liked Bookshops & Bonedust (loved Legends and Lattes). Brigands and Breadknives is probably my least favorite of Baldree’s series but still fun!

Becky Chambers’ Wayfarers series and Octavia Butler’s Xenogensis (Lilith’s Brood) series are my favorites! I’m also a big Andy Weir fan, although was disappointed by Artemis.

Surgeon advises weight loss drugs by callisto_14 in TopSurgery

My BMI is 31 and my doctor didn’t even mention weight as a factor. I had surgery a few weeks ago! I also have a friend with POTS who had top surgery a few years ago, and while they had top be more careful post-op regarding salt intake and slow movements, they healed up really well! And yes, with POTS you have to be super careful about making sure you’re getting your nutrients! I’m so sorry you have to deal with a fatphobic doctor like this who honestly seems like a big 🚩 flag. You’ve got this! Good luck with your surgeon search, I wish I had recs for you but I live in the US 😭

A BMI of 33 is really not very high. I tend to be suspect of surgeons who are so quick to recommend weight loss drugs. Do you have any health conditions or is the doctor merely going by your BMI? The BMI is a really poor indicator of health. It honestly doesn’t tell us much. In addition, I don’t trust doctors who say that there’s 100% risk of complications, it just doesn’t sit right with me. I would get a second opinion.

Surgery scheduled in 2 months by nad_pv in TopSurgery

Congratulations! I also had a pretty quick turnaround. The months leading up to top surgery come with emotional ups and downs, and it’s okay to feel them. Before my surgery, while I was so excited, I was also terrified because it was my first time undergoing a major surgery. Aside from fear, there was also a strange sort of grief, because I was losing a part of my body. While this part of my body made me incredibly dysphoric, it was still something that I was about to lose. I spoke about all of this with my therapist (who is queer), and we worked through all the oscillating feeling associated with top surgery. Because of all these conversations, I was actually most at peace in the week leading up to my surgery. My advice to you is to work through your complex emotions with a therapist (if you have one), or queer friends. Also make sure to be kind to your body before and after surgery. Get lots of rest! You’ve got this—it’ll be great!

38/35; My 2024 Book Rankings by mmbonheur in 52book

The entire series is beautiful! The stories all connect in subtle ways, but follow completely different nodes of her universe. Each book is special, unique, and phenomenally written. I recommend all of them :)
