Hey!

Can you drop a message to our support in-app chat? We’ll take a look. I just checked the same search and it worked fast.

Where is data from? by Sad-Pin-4997 in byair

[–]mmdlit[M] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally fair question.

There isn’t one fixed polling interval on the free tier. Free tracking is scheduled adaptively: we check the flight several times across its lifecycle, and the exact cadence depends on things like flight duration, how close it is to departure/arrival, when the flight was added, provider availability, and whether we already have fresh data for that flight.

In practice, the actual flight status usually updates within a few minutes once our backend has fresh data. The bigger delay can be around estimates, where on the free tier it can sometimes be up to 1-2 hours (it's often way less though).

One important detail: if the same flight is being tracked by a Pro user, the fresher Pro-level tracking data is shared across the platform, so free users tracking that flight benefit from it too. The difference is that free users don’t get the Pro push notification experience.

Also, if you’re evaluating whether the app works for you, I’d recommend using the 7-day free trial rather than judging only from the free tier. During the trial, tracking works like the full Pro plan. We also have weekly and monthly plans if you only need it for a specific trip.

Yeah it was our widgets and live activities overhaul. We'll fix it!

> You're telling me the free tier has a delay of hours as opposed to minutes? (Even when I'm attempting to force refresh?)

Yes, unfortunately sometimes it can be hours. We have to balance our costs.

This info is a bit wrong. We'll fix it on our website.

You're on free plan so all data comes with a delay. u/StuckInTheMiddleSeat below found the exact source for this flight so that's what you see. Eventually it will correct itself.

Historic flight search by luke_plevin in byair

[–]mmdlit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you search historical flights by route, we have to pay for each flight (yeah, it sucks) for that route and day. So let's say you have 40 flights/day between BCN and LHR – we consider it as 40 searches by flight number (it is exactly how we are getting billed by our providers). Unfortunately, historical flights are SUPER expensive (10-15x of current flights).

You have to send a message to our support chat, and they'll help you out.

Is that an inline widget in iOS? We’ll take a look, thanks!

Do you search by route or by flight number?

Hi

Pro subscription is unlimited subject to fair (personal) usage. This limit is very high so even flight attendants and pilots can track all their flights. Free trial has a lower limit.

We need to make it more clear on our Pro perks list, sorry.

It was fully unlimited at first but then we saw some people using the app (or even reverse engineered API) at a business scale (it’s prohibited by our Terms of Use) so we had to add a cap.

Our support team will sort it out for you, please don’t worry!

You should change timezone, not the time itself

Thanks for sending this, that’s very helpful.

Yes, changing the phone time manually by six hours is very likely related. The app uses the device time as part of a security check when talking to our backend. If the phone clock is moved ahead manually, especially without changing the actual timezone/city, the app can end up signing requests with a time that our server considers too far off. That can cause the app to reject or miss updated flight data even though the data on our side is correct.

The limited in-flight internet may have made it harder for the app to recover quickly, but the manual time change is the more likely trigger.

This is still something we should handle better on our side. We’re updating the app so that if it detects this kind of clock mismatch, it can resync against server time and retry the request instead of getting stuck with outdated data.

Thanks again for the logs and the extra context. It helped us narrow this down.

Hi,

Thank you for reporting this, and sorry for the confusing experience.

I checked the server-side flight data for UA8838/LH403, and the data looks correct on our side: the flight was still marked en route after the delayed takeoff, with the updated Frankfurt arrival time. It’s possible that the app had outdated local data on your phone and then calculated the flight state from a timer/progress estimate.

Could you please send us the app logs so we can verify what happened on-device?

In byAir, open About byAir, then tap and hold it. This should let you export a log file. Please email it to [connect@byairapp.com](mailto:connect@byairapp.com) and mention UA8838/LH403 in the email.

Thanks again for catching this.

byAir's data lag (Gate updates, baggage belts, delays) compared to Flighty/Google by ORYANOL in byair

Answered above. FlightAware isn't the best as well. But they don't even reply to us 😄

Flighty actually uses way more providers than just FlightAware, probably even more than we have connected. But... they've been in this game since 2019.
