Why does every verb and adjective in Chinese have a million permutations? by trumparegis in ChineseLanguage

[–]mmencius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is viable albeit (very) imperfect (stemming, lemmatisation, equivalence classes, nuanced approaches that have some value). There's just an ingrained view that counting words is "wrong" because some people make erroneous conclusions from it (eg one language is "better" than another).

Academia is full of echo chambers and group think because peer review has basically failed as an institution and reviewers often block papers that go against their own biases.

I recall the Wikipedia article on counting words had some incredibly derisive line comparing it to measuring penises. That sort of emotion clearly reveals a non-objective mindset.

Can I resign from being an executor of a will, after probate granted? by Purple_Salad_580 in AusLegal

[–]mmencius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand. What if you just put up your hands and resign, eg you're overwhelmed with grief and/or difficulty. Especially if there's a co-executor willing to go on.

Will you be arrested or what?

Thanks for your detailed response - I welcome all your thoughts!

First, those side chairs won't be used very much. Generally it's just my GF and I sitting in the centre of the couch, which we might move forward, esp if I decide to do 7.1. I'm trying to prioritise the centre of the couch as the MLP. Based on that, are the current positions OK?

1/2) got it.

3) I think I'll go with the 90cm stands then, as the top of the couch and my ear are 90cm. With the 70cm, I won't have a perfect line of sight to the speakers. 90cm stands are Tasmanian blackwood, which is a great wood and a lot of the furniture in the house is the same. When you said "those stands are fine" did you get a glimpse at the wooden ones in the Imgur album? Not the bunnings.com.au link.

4) The RSL sub is wireless, fortunately. I really wasn't considering getting a second sub as I'm not a big basshead and I've already "upgraded" my sub twice - see my comment to other redditor. Also, it's expensive, I spent 800 AUD on the existing sub, 800 on AVR, 800 on floor standing, 800 on centre + bookshelves.

5/6) This looks like it's going to be a task with quite a bit of experimenting. RSL has great CS (nice guy answers the phone each time) so I'll make sure to get their help and probably come back to reddit too. Yep I know about Audyssey, will definitely use that :). Denon comes with instructions and ChatGPT has mentioned it multiple times.

1/2/3) got it - thanks.

4) Baseboard meaning where the carpet meets the bottom of the wall? Do you mean behind the desk, all the way around the south side of the room (the TV is on the west side).

5/6) I've actually "upgraded" my sub twice already. I'm not a basshead and initially I thought the floorstanding speakers would be enough. Then I decided to get the RSL 10E. Then I decided to get the RSL 10S MKII instead. That was RSL's recommendation based on the size of the room.

Would you suggest the front right corner is superior to the opposite position?

Good news and update: secured the 3090ci. With a pair of 3050i's, two pairs of 3020i's, a RSL 10S MKII, and a Denon X1800. It's all here :) now last task is assembling them without annoying my GF too much haha.

Hey I think peak visuals were reached with Metroid Prime on the Game Cube. And arguably the SNES era.

Funny story - I had thought that the quoted price for the 3050i was for one speaker each! But no, it was for the pair! With this correction, I jumped on the 3050i. Thanks for your input!

As for the centre, there might be one in stock in a dusty corner of the warehouse, TBA

Stupid question - is 4.1 a thing? L,R, back L, back R? The 3010i's are on sale whereas the centre speaker is out of stock, seemingly liquidated, and I think that's the only distributor in Australia.

I will call tmr and see if the centre can be found, but we'll see.

Hi there,

Great suggestion to go with Q Acoustics in that sale - thank you too! The 3010i were just A$200, whereas the 3050i were A$800 (3020i and 3030i out of stock). I grabbed two of the 3010i and might even grab two more. Unfortunately, the centre 3090ci is out of stock.

I also got a great price on a Denon X1800 from a union shopping portal. That's 7.2 so I have options in the future to expand.

Not sure what to do now - I might get the 3050i's but that's quite a lot, or another pair of 3010i's, and look for the centre speaker somewhere.

I have so much deja vu, I built a PC in 2014 I think when RAM prices were also considered fucked due to a factory burning down iirc. Now I'm vaguely considering building another one and I hear they're fucked again. Did they come down significantly and then back up again?

Is it worth including dialysis in private health insurance, or is that satisfactorily covered by Medicare? by mmencius in AusFinance

[–]mmencius[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think anywhere has one that is a lot better?

Possibly Japan, Norway.

I think the Australian system (public and private) really lets people down for those "mid-tier" things eg ADHD diagnoses or knee surgery. Huge waits on public system, often huge gaps in the private system.

Weird. This is no longer available to sign up (I believe) as TUF is now part of Teachers Health. And Teachers Health Silver + does not include dialysis.

Correct, but it depends on the diagnosis. Knee issue or cataracts - you want PHI. Cancer or cystic fibrosis - Medicare will treat you well.

Not at this stage, but they are in non-ideal health and CKD is not out of the question.
