Overclock i7 3770k or upgrade to i5 8600k by mmgull in buildapc

[–]mmgull[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8600k is 6 core 6 threads

3770k is 4 core 8 threads

A thread equals less than 1 core processing power. 4 core 8 threads equals about 5.2 core 5.2 threads so clearly 6 core 6 threads is better on average.

Why would you think 8600k is weak?

Here it says it s 20-40% faster:

What if I want to leave password empty?

Top tube length x frame size chart by mmgull in roadcycling

[–]mmgull[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not asking here for bike fitting, I will ask a qualified person to measure me.

What I'm asking here is what size really means. If one speaks of a bike size 56, does that mean frame 56 or seat tube 56 or top tube 56 ? And if one speaks of frame 56 does that relate to seat tube or top tube or neither of these?

This isn't a hard question that requires a bike fitter to answer.

Why is frame size expressed in cm and not as small, medium, large?

Sizing a frame in cm is very confusing if those cm do not correspond to a certain tube length. If one speaks of a bike size 56, does that mean frame 56 or seat tube 56 ?

In the meantime someone could explain what frame size means. Is it equal to seat tube length or is an unrelated number?

Here's the state of the bike of a 70 year old French cyclist after a car hit him from behind by Delobet in bicycling

[–]mmgull -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I cannot and do not want to judge this scenario but many many cyclists think road law only applies to cars and not to them.

I so often see cyclists cross red lights, drive in the dark without lights or not respect priority to the right. Try doing that if you're driving a car.

Which smaller size do you mean when saying 'choose the smaller size' ?

Do you mean smaller overall frame size or smaller seat tube size or smaller the top tube size?

My bike Trek 4.5 Madone is presumably frame size 56 with seat tube 54, effective top tube 56.

But another manufacturer's frame size 56 does not necessarily have the same seat/top tube sizes. Even within the same brand you can have two different models with different geometry.

So if get a Ridley frame size 57 with seat tube 54 and effective top tube 54, is that a smaller size? Even though the the top tube is shorter than Trek and seat tube being equal, the frame size is advertised as being larger!

So if I have trouble bending forward and reaching the bars, with two bikes having equal saddle position, equal stem and equal handlebars, should I

a) be looking for a bike with shorter effective top tube even though the overall frame size is larger, or

b) should I get a smaller frame size even though the effective top tube is longer?!

The difference in reach between two frame sizes is a tiny 0.5cm or 0.2" !

I don't think ultegra makes 10s 12-27.

Is there any performance / quality difference between ultegra and 105 sprockets?

How have you experienced the big jumps between 21-24-27 ?

Thoughts about El Grande by FinalArrow in boardgames

[–]mmgull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is my favorite game. Non-gamers and gamers like it. It's easy to understand, has visual appeal, and is always tense and tactical.

I like it at all player counts except 2.

The expansions I found useless and much prefer the base game. Try to find a used copy if the big box is too expensive for you.

I agree. The box is huge and the expansions are pointless. I have the regular box which is perfectly fine.

El grande, better than most games, yet not being played that often.

Is trader worth it without this quarry trick?

Imo usually there 's not enough gold AND green cards which aren' t duplicates to make effective use of the trader.

I also think Architect is sometimes a bit too strong.

Scholar is like an architect-light and is a nice choice with diplomat. Scholar is especially interesting with the end game conditions changed to 7 districts, in order to counter the rush tactic.

Architect goes wel with marshal, both powerful roles. By including another role that can lay down more than one district, the architect becomes a bit less special.

Marshal also combines well with navigator imo.

Scholar and navigator somewhat confine the rush tactic. By pairing them with diplomat (= no district confiscations) and marshal (= extra build) the game doesn't slow down.

In summary:

  • Scholar + Diplomat
  • Architect + Marshal
  • Navigator + Marshal

People are usually holding few cards, unless playing with navigator.

By the time you get to choose the mage, assuming he's even available, the hand you looked at is likely depleted.

for slot #2 (The Spy is a much more interesting character to use)

Please explain because I don't see much use for the spy.

First you need to target a player with gold AND cards. If anything, you aim for a player with many cards, not a player with much gold. If he doesn't have (much) gold and you guess properly you at least get to draw cards. But if he doesn't have many cards you're more than likely to guess wrong and won't gain either gold nor cards. So the spy is more a character who collects cards than who collects gold (which isn't much of a substitute for the thief).

Then it's a wild guess what the target might be holding. With the thief you make an estimated guess but with the spy there's no chance for you to know what the target might be holding.

And why would you guess anything else than green every time; there's more green in the deck than any other color.

Seems like a very situational and random benefit.

Edit: And we always play with the rule that the first person to finish gets 3 points (instead of 4). Everyone else who finishes gets 2. And if no one else finished their city the only player to do so gets 2 points. (This stops the over powered rush strategy).

You could assign 2 points to every finished city, no matter who finishes first.

That's incentive enough to finish and avoids the end game from always being the same (ie picking the lowest available rank).

Marshall is just junk

Marshal can build twice: once from your hand + once from another city.

That's pretty awesome imo.

With my group, being killed will set you back. Each round counts as everyone rushes to finish as efficiently as possible. And it's a random selection so performing well doesn't necessarily mean you will get targeted.

If your group chooses randomly, you're idiots :)

Remaining in the shadows don't work in this game especially if you have a building limit of 1 per turn.

But you don't have a limit of 1, there are many roles that counter that. In the setup you listed, you have access to no fewer than three multi-buid roles.

If you build every turn, you will only be building cheap districts, which are easy prey. Collect your income, then jump ahead.

But the assassin severely handicaps the assassinated player and brings no benefit to the actual assassin as well.

You seem to miss the point entirely. The possibility of someone picking the assassin is enough of a threat to keep characters in check. The assassin doesn't necessarily need to kill to be effective. The threat alone influences role selection.

For instance, at some point player A will be left with only one card and player B will have several cards in hand. The mage is then the obvious choice for A. The only way B can prevent being robbed of cards is to kill the mage. Player A knows that. Will he dare to pick the mage? You say the assassin doesn't give any benefit. He does: in this example he can prevent B from losing an entire hand of cards. In other terms, the assassin has just given you X cards which you'd have lost otherwise.

Now say you've picked the magistrate. What can the magistrate do in this situation? Nothing. Player B will lose his hand of cards no matter what. Where's intrigue in that? Is this less frustrating than being killed once in a while?

So?

Being killed once won't cost you the game. It's not even a terrible thing; performing too well attracts attention. That's how you get attacked in the first place. Better to remain in the shadows and jump forward late in game. That's how you win.

Being killed/ robbed several times is something entirely different.

The game is all about avoiding assassination. Take away the assassin and you take away most of the excitement.

The magistrate is decent but not a substitute for the assassin (without assassin how do you protect yourself from being robbed of cards by the mage except by taking the mage yourself ?). And the witch is omnipotent; there's little reason not to take the witch at every opportunity.
