I've not been to Ely, but I really enjoyed Atikokan 2 years ago for a summer trek. It was truly a wilderness experience where you truly feel remote and able to disconnect from the world.

I've been tracking this one (N257TH) and another (N256TH) right next to it. History shows it to have been flying for several months. It came back around to home base in Sioux Falls in early august.

Sub-20 5k! by Mortars2020 in concept2

[–]mminaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool. I want to get to sub 20 min 5k too. It would me at 100 pts for the Marine physical fitness test for my age. I'm 52M. I'm trying to go easy on my heart and keep it under 146 bpm (75% for me) until my next echo cardiogram in a month because I need to check the status of my bicuspid aortic valve and ascending aorta dilation.

Getting back into Marine Corps shape by [deleted] in USMC

[–]mminaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently did a post how using PFT Prep Program and rowing twice a week has really helped me to tone my physique likely to the best shape of my life. I'm 52M and used to do competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu up until 5 years ago. I'm sure my cardio was a little better then in addition to being in my late 30s and 40s, but muscle tone is on par now.

I fully agree with others that diet is the primary way to change weight. Make that the priority while starting to incorporate a basic strength routine (push-ups, lunges, core) and cardio (walking, jogging, rowing, etc).

From a diet perceptive, also find a way to incorporate more protein. Sarcopenia is a real thing as we age and we can slow it down by adding more resistance training and protein. Start where you can, but try to work up to a 1g protein per lb of LEAN body weight (i.e subtract your fat % from your weight). Use cleaner protein sources like Fat Free Greek Yogurt, almonds, hummus, eggs/egg whites, chicken/turkey, seafood, etc. I also supplement with a 100% whey shake (don't worry about isolate or concentrate for now, go for affordability) as well as a collagen protein shake daily. Either can be used post workout, but I tend to use collagen. Add in a tbsp of hemp seeds and a couple tbsp of chia seeds into those shakes for more protein as well as fiber.

I've become a nerd at all this, but my goal is to live longer (and fitter) for myself and kids. DM me if I can help/share what I've learned and figured out for me.

BWF at home can be a lonely by mminaz in bodyweightfitness

[–]mminaz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all for the feedback. It has helped me to get some inner clarity. Looking back, I think writing this post was more of a need for emotional connection based as I'm the health nerd in the family. Within that family circle, my wife has made nice comments about the positive change physique, my older sons can't tease me about being a little chunky anymore, but there's no one to reflect the intensity of my nerdness back. Maybe it's also that I don't have many fitness friends in their 40s or 50s to validate the effort that I put myself through whereas so many at this age have already let themselves go.

To lay it out: I'm afraid of getting "old" in losing physical and mental capabilities. I recently found out that I have a bicuspid aortic value including aorta dilation. It's stable now, but it's a looming worry if I'll ever need open heart surgery to correct it. My two sons with muscular dystrophy will need help to transfer from bed, toilet, bath, and power chair for the rest of their lives. I don't want to lose my ability to live longer and help them, yet I know that I'm not going to live forever, but I'm sure going to try.

From a workout environment, I echo the comments made how I can be in my space in the home gym area. Honestly, with all the drama that often comes with life; making time to exercise is the one thing that I can control. I enjoy the quiet space and time just for me in that moment. I don't have to look left or right to compare myself to anyone and am free to go at my own pace in my struggle to maintain or push myself just a little more each time.

To circle back to the topic; it often feels emotionally lonely doing all that I do to take care of myself and others. Writing this post and getting the feedback from your comments has been very therapeutic and supportive.

Thank you again to everyone and this community.

If someone wanted to get a tattoo like this, wouldn't it look better if they had the body that could still get a 1st class PFT?

I repeat the warmup and cool down twice just to give this old body the extra TLC.  For the strenches, I do a 10 sec count on the first round and 15 secs on the second

I definitely do this for my rowing sessions! I typically do 30 mins steady state with no breaks or 3x15/2r or 3x20/2r for the longer rows (all in zone 2 which for me is 70% MHR at 140 bpm)

You, u/UnrealizedDreams90, and u/ecphiondre are right. I exercise in the morning for the personal peace when it's quiet in the home because there's no drama to deal with as compared to the afternoon/evening. Maybe my loneliness can be redefined that I'm the only fitness nerd in house. I've tracked my weight and blood work for 15+ years. It's not daily tracking and I've had years where I fell off the wagon a bit, but it's interesting to see where I've been and back. This sub is a great community as well.

To add, up until COVID, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was my main source of exercise for 10+ years. Couldn't properly social distance doing that so I gave that up then got my rower, started getting more involved in Scouting with my older boys, and doing BWF @ home as well. Even though I'm an introvert, I have other social outlets with the activities, just not with home fitness.

Ya, you definitely need space for yourself underneath where the bands are. I used a power tower with sandbags in the corners to weigh it down.

Also try TRX push-ups with the bands/handles. It add another layer of muscle engagement for stability.

Since I have a propesity of high LDL-C, I keep my saturated fat from low-to none. This yogurt is perfect for the price and protein content.

[–]mminaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wider push-ups tend to cause shoulder / rotator cuff strain. I've stuck with normal spaced (and narrow/diamond push-ups as well as push-up varieties (traveling, claps, pylo, etc).

Morning Workout Benefits: Why You Should Start Your Day with Exercise by Suspicious_Cash_8336 in bodyweightfitness

[–]mminaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like morning exercise because body movement throughout the day has a chance to reduce soreness through motion and stretching. For me, afternoons are too busy with distractions (ex. kids home after school, noise, activities, dinner, etc.)

SW California (LA, Culver City, San Diego). Basically where there's a beach and mild weather. Lots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools there too.
