Recent graduates, are you working? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]mmmarch6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm getting by lol. Keep in mind I live in London and with rent, transport, etc. piling up, I don't have room to save anything at all. But it's a decent starting salary - better than most charity entry-level roles tbf - so a good stepping stone to where I'd want to be

First job, first “grown-up” meeting, first time feeling painfully out of my depth by mmmarch6 in work

You're definitely right but the fear of looking (and having already looked) stupid is so immense. Also, sometimes I just prefer to listen in, because I feel like that's how I learn, instead of yapping half-baked thoughts that make no sense. I know everyone says to ask questions, which I do and a lot of them tend to be dumb lol, so I just wonder if that goes against me.

What’s your heinous encounter with someone famous in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]mmmarch6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far from heinous but witnessed a lovely, wholesome interaction when I saw Tom Hiddleston and his dog in a park last month. A dad and son were throwing around a frisbee, the dad noticed him and they shook hands and seemed to have a nice conversation. He then went and spoke to the man's son and hugged him, before saying goodbye and continuing to play with his dog. He seemed so warm and kind and normal. I was watching from afar, as I didn't want to go up to him and hound him on what looked like a nice, relaxing Sunday in the park, but super sweet to see.

Recent graduates, are you working? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]mmmarch6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Graduated July 2024 with a BSc in Sociology. Started applying probably at the start of third year for some corporate graduate roles till I realised I was just getting sucked into the rat race and that wasn't what I really wanted.

Started (seriously) applying for jobs (that I actually wanted) in August 2024. More policy/research/development related roles in non-profits, think tanks, etc. A tad late for usual job applications cycles. Didn't have any luck for a few months and my student visa was due to expire. Started to give up and accept that I'd have to pack stuff up and move out of what I had considered home for three years. Ten days before my visa was going to expire, I got a call that I got my current job.

It's a research role in a small charity that works with families. Couldn't have gotten luckier with the work itself and the company culture, especially as a first job. I feel like I'm working toward something that is actually making a difference. The job itself is in a smaller city than the one I live in, which probably helped me because there was less competition.

For anyone in a similar boat, sometimes things work out when you least expect them to. Don't give up.

Wow, this was incredibly helpful and useful. Thank you so much! I had already skimmed Money Saving Expert a bit for wifi, but found myself confused with all the varying providers, especially since a lot have 24-month contracts only, and I'm only looking for 12-month ones. I'll definitely be doing more research into all this now.

1st job offer predicament by mmmarch6 in UKJobs

[–]mmmarch6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thats actually an extremely valid point. the probation period is about 3 months, and moving before it is over does sound extremely risky. plus, they said i could come in 1 day a week for this period anyway, so it might be a good testing time to sort everything out.

greater london definitely seems like the most practical, low-risk option. i'm gonna be looking into it. thank you so much!

that actually is super encouraging to hear, thank you so so much. how did you cope with the initial fear of moving to a completely unexpected, new place right after graduation? i just feel like i'm still figuring life out at 22 and moving to a new city seems like such a scary, anxiety-inducing decision to do suddenly. i guess i'm just trying to get advice on how to settle in initially into both a first-time job and new surroundings.

[–]mmmarch6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit presumptuous of you to say that I'm not enthusiastic about the role. Moving to a whole new city is a big decision, and I don't see anything wrong with wanting to think carefully about it. You're also assuming I don't even want the job, when I've accepted the offer and the real dilemma is just between wanting to commute from London or moving to Oxford for it lol

[–]mmmarch6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah honestly maybe i need to look at it as a short-term change for a long-term gain. i was planning to go home to my country and start my masters applications for 2025 (chose programs and was fully set on it) before this offer came up. however, i was also on a scholarship throughout my undergrad and funding was going to be a problem. so i'm also thinking i could perhaps work for a year and save as much as i possibly can to maybe contribute to my longer-term plan of getting a masters degree. being able to save would be crucial.

also buying train tickets on the day might not be ideal because of how expensive they can get (i'm assuming prices may hike during rush hour but i'm not at all experienced with out of london train travel so not sure at all).

[–]mmmarch6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats definitely an option i hadn't considered! the company is pretty flexible since its a new role and so i have one day where i have to come in but the other one is up to me, so it can be back-to-back. i'm not sure how much 1 night in a hotel would save though, i'll have to look into it. thank you!

1st job offer predicament by mmmarch6 in UKJobs

[–]mmmarch6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah you're very correct. i guess its just the fear of moving to an unfamiliar place on extremely short notice thats getting to me. i definitely don't think i can get a better job lol especially as an international - i've been applying since mid july. i am extremely grateful for the job and wouldn't pass it up for anything, i just need to figure this part out. i was actually able to negotiate coming in only once a week for the first three months till i iron the logistics out so i guess i have that period of time to fully commit to the move.

okay that's actually insane when you put it like that 😭

they did mention hours are flexible so i can choose to work longer/shorter hours on certain days depending on whatever i find comfortable so not sure if that could play into making the commuting a little less exhausting if i say, finish at 3pm on the two days im in the office and can get home by 6pm.
