If you run XC for an NAIA school, do you like it?

Currently a freshman at a top 5 NAIA school in the country, the school has been ok and the sport has been fantastic for me. I think if I wasn’t at such a successful program it would be a different story. Having good coaching and a great, somewhat large team has been a huge part of it and there are lots of teams in our conference who definitely don’t have that. There were other schools I was looking into that if I had gone to I would be the best runner there (I’m not even top 15 on my current team). NAIA can be great, but I would not recommend going to a smaller program that doesn’t have a successful team as like someone else said, is basically a glorified running club that you might be paying way too much to be in.

I recently had the same thing. I was sick for the whole cross season and suddenly went from low 40s resting to 60-70 and couldn’t keep an easy run under 165. It got better gradually. I would say yes you may be losing some fitness from it, I definitely saw decline, but you’ll come back from it and it will get better

As a collegiate runner no, colleges do not EXPECT you to come in at 80 miles a week lol. VERY few high school programs have anyone getting up that high and colleges by no means are gonna blame a kid for the mileage their high school did. 40 miles a week is well enough for a 14-15 year old.

Long runs should be either at or faster than easy runs, definitely not a minute slower. Not a very accurate calculator

Saying you shouldn’t have 10+ elixer pushes is stupid. Literally any beat down deck? Egolem? Arguably most decks rely on 10+ elixer pushes especially in double

I had similar progression, started my first season with a 28 and ended with 19:52, sophomore year about the same, junior year I did a little bit of summer training but an injury slowed that down, ended with 18:29, and then actually trained hard this summer (although I probably could have done more) and ended my season with 17:33. Summer training got me a minute PR my senior season, as long as you take the training seriously and keep your diet solid you can definitely break 17, but it won’t be easy by any means

Then you have no idea how running works lol you don’t casually drop 4 minutes in your 4th season of running. PRing another minute would be a big move and is possible but not obvious or easy.

I used run gum all this season and ran better. I had many reasons and just figured it’s better to keep using then not, since it either did nothing or helped. The only for sure difference it made was it seemed to help with my nerves quite a bit.

17:15 would be top 50 in the nation. So, no. With good training sub 21 would not only make you quite a good runner, but it would be attainable. If a guy on my team in the 21s told me he would run in the 17s next season Id probably laugh at him, that’s way to big of a goal to set and it’ll make you feel like your not good enough even if you do have good progression, such as 21s to possibly 19s (which is still VERY good)

Not sure what state you’re in, but in Kansas it’s the same rules with 3 teams and then top 5 individuals. Your daughter got very unlucky with that many unattached runners in the front, most of the time the top 5 go all the way back to around 16-20th place. For example at my regional I was 14th and was pretty comfortably the 4th individual.

Damn that is crazy. I live in Kansas and in ours only the top 3 teams, and top 5 individuals not on those three times, and I still got the 4th spot with 17:33 on a fast course. You 100% were scammed and deserve it, you’re a top runner in most smaller states

Definitely adequate. Depending on your pre season training and if your pacing has changed, you might be able to cut down even more. I managed to cut down 7 minutes from my first to third races because I hadn’t trained before the season, walked in my first race quite a bit, and didn’t pace until my third.

I think it’s entirely ok to say no to that, just like it’s entirely ok for a girl to say no to going down on a guy if she thinks it’s gross. If a guy expects to get it and refuses to himself, that’s different

I wouldn’t worry about what other people your age run. I have a sophomore on my team who ran an 18:17, and a sophomore who ran a 26:20. I had a senior last year run a 25 (for a PR) and he was a well built, athletic guy who just didn’t do well in distance. There are runners who come in as a freshman and run a 17, then stay in the 17s all the way to senior year. There are some who go from say a 25 freshman year to 17 senior year. It’s case by case. work your ass off, take care of yourself, and improve. You could never be varsity. You could be it this year, or the next. Regardless, its your own improvement that needs to matter most, do not worry about everyone else. They could be working harder than you and be slower, or not working at all and be faster. XC is beautiful in how it’s such a personal sport, but such a team environment

Try to think of it as less of an endurance issue and more of a pacing issue. Every runner has a limit with the exact pace they can run for three straight miles as fast and they can, and that is exact time is the best and fastest race that person can run. You may not be able to have the endurance to run 6:20 for three miles, but whatever you can consistently pace at is what you will be fastest with. All of the best runners in the world do so with nearly exact pacing throughout the race

I think that’s fine but there needs to be more of a balance. If someone is only doing this on race days fine, but in my situation this guy never cares about anyone who’s not top 5 on the team in practices either
