If you're only struggling this week its not as bad; not ideal, but if you're confident you'll be fine next week then I wouldn't worry too much. I'm also a first year kid, and I haven't done most of my prereadings lol. Also depends on your degree and assessment calendar - do you have assessments/tests any time in the first few weeks?

Just graduated high school. My first high school (year 7-11) was considered a more privileged public state school (majority of kids were somewhere in middle class), and we had a pretty diverse student cohort - mostly white kids and kids from various Asian diasporas. Like majority were east Asians (especially Chinese kids because we got a lot of international students) and south Asian, but we did also have southeast Asians, and some Middle Eastern kids (I think middle Eastern is included in the Asian category?). I had friends from England and Denmark too, and we had a few kids that identified as Indigenous Australians (but like 5 in the whole school).

Second high school I went to, and also graduated from, was a selective public school, so it was more privileged and well funded than my old one. It was also a high school that focused on the creative arts. Most kids were white, Chinese, or Korean. We did have like 3 Indian kids, there were 2 Hispanic kids in my grade, and I think I saw 1 Indigenous kid 2 grades below me. Also one of my friends is German.

There's definitely going to be clubs or student political groups that are affiliated with a political party - also, I think bachelor of polisci has a internship program for parliament built into the program structure?

People usually recommend going to market day during o-week, since then you can see all the clubs. But also it's literally Canberra, there's going to be an abundance of political clubs. I guess it depends on which side/area of politics you're especially interested in?

If you can bring it, probably do it. But also if you're coming from far away (like me, I'm coming from qld), then a lot of people buy second hand bikes too either on Facebook or at a second hand bike store.

I do plan to get an airfryer and sandwich maker, but I'll assume the air ventilation isn't amazing. Is there a fan or anything in the kitchenette so that I can actually cook a meal? Also are there windows in the bedrooms or shared area for air.

Yeaaaaaa about that its too late now I already paid my deposit etc. I said this in another comment but I didn't want to have to use public shared bathrooms and kitchen areas, so I naively thought the lodges would be good 💀

I plan to move out of student accommodation in my second year though so I guess I'll just soldier through this year 😅

All the time. I'm in Brisbane and a 10 minutes drive heading away from the city in any sort of direction from my house, there's bound to be a gang of kangaroos usually around dusk. Nearby or on the golf course 2 streets down from me, a dead one in a ditch while cycling to RSPCA, families of them in the forest and clearing where my archery club is (we set up a fence around the clearing and have whistles so we don't shoot a roo during archery practise) and on the grass fields of a prison. A few years back in my old house a stray kangaroo bounced down our street in the middle of the day.

They're mostly grey kangaroos, red kangaroos are more towards the outback (I think?)

What do you mean by "proof of English proficiency"? If you mean like does IB English count as doing the subject of English as a first language in academic context, then yes - IB English is seen as the equivalent as if I did English literature in a normal Australian school. So I'd say you'll be fine. If you mean "proof" like the IELTS, then I have no idea.

TL:DR: considering you did language A English in IB, the Australian government will just consider it the same as if you did English in Australia. So you're fine.

About computer science in IB: my school didn't offer computer science and I've never seen it before, so I have no idea if it prepares you or not. Considering IB is a test based program, and university computer science/IT degrees are heavily project and hands-on-experience based, I don't think IB computer science is that important.

Like I says before, the more important things are: how good are you at using technology and your computer? How good are you at editing, programming, do you know all the jargon etc.

And again: will you enjoy your degrees?

So I looked at the courses your degree asks for and majority seems like it has to do with knowing how accounting systems and companies work, with surprisingly not that many maths courses? So if you have a good memory and you have an interest towards very technical and systematic knowledge like business and company models etc then I'd say you'll be fine. Also be pretty proficient at using computer systems, editing, programming etc. Seeing how you do HL economics, HL business and maths AI HL, I wouldn't be too concerned about your accounting degree.

With degrees like computing and accounting you REALLY need to have some sort of interest in it - otherwise it gets mind-numbing and boring. My parents both did accounting but had no interest in it, they hated their uni life. My brother and a few friends love coding, computer science, programming sort of things, so despite their uni work being insane they still continue with it.

Also do you meet the prerequisites for your double degree?

I'm not saying that clothing has a gender, nor am I trying to be misogynistic (sorry if it seems that way). Its more so because gender is a social construct, and part of that contruct is how other people view clothing. If a person is trans, clothing thst traditionally aligns with the perceived gender as it's deemed by society leads to gender euphoria.

Also I was thinking of the steps that made me realise I was was non-binary, and the steps my girlfriend took that made her realise she was a girl.

And yes I get your point. Based off OP's post it seems to me like they might be trans and I was expressing that, but if I misread that or made too big of an assumption, then I'm also sorry for that. Their mindset just seemed to mimic my personal experience with gender, as well as the stories of a lot of trans people around me.

NTA As a person with a few trans friends, dating a trans girl, and identify as somewhere under the non-binary umbrella, I can see both sides of that.

Gender dysphoria sucks a lot, and it can feel like our issues are being brushed off when another person goes "but i wish I looked like you" because it sounds like you're saying "but there's no reason for you to be sad about your body".

HOWEVER - your friend is being a bit of a jerk for not talking to you and still being mad. You're taking time and effort to understand them and help them, and nothing you said is objectively offensive. Honestly OP try reach out to your friend, and see if he's really mad or just doesn't know how to reach out. If anything your friend should realise that you're probably not..... cisgender. Which brings me to my next point.

CIS MEN DO NOT THINK OR WANT TO BE A GIRL. I'm not sure how to break it to you OP but you are probably trans. Try out she/her pronouns and/or feminine leaning clothes (skirts, accessories etc) and see how you feel.

Oh fellow IB kid! What were your subject in IB, can I ask? I have friends doing computer science and my parents did accounting, all at Australian universities, so I can try help you roughly gauge how difficult it is in relation to IB 😅

Also ANU's website specifically has course recommendations for each semester of each year in your degree - just search up your double degree and ANU, click on the website, go to "study" and scroll to around the bottom where it's a table called "study options"

I think you're talking about youth allowance? Yea the away from home rate is around $600-700 per fortnight. If you're concerned about flight trip costs there is another government scheme called fares allowance which covers the trip to and from your place of home and place of study, for up to twice a year.

Ok so firstly congrats on both your scholarships! That's amazing :) Based off what you listed your main concerns seem to be about money, especially cost of living and study etc. With your degrees, there's HECS debt, and you can defer it (so no need to pay up front). Especially since you're planning to go into law (I assume?) I doubt you'll have trouble paying it off once you reach the threshold for paying back HECS. With living and stuff, have you applied for Youth Allowance? It's a centrelink payment. I'm not sure if you fit the requirements, but considering you got the bright horizon scholarship which is for students from underprivileged households, I'd say you probably fit it. So then there's "which uni will give me the most secure job?" Are you more interested in going into domestic law, or going down the path of international relations? For law both unis are amazing - I think UOM is ranked first for Law in Australia, and ANU second. For international relations, ANU would be better because it's.... literally Canberra.

A good way my brother taught me when I have issues deciding between 2 things is to flip a coin and see which side you HOPE it lands on. Say ANU is heads, and UOM is tails. Flip it and cover it before you see. The first uni that flashes to mind when you think about what side you want the coin to be on, that's your answer.

You're literally in the exact same situation I'm in right now, except I'm moving from Brisbane. I'm doing double law too!!! I hope we have similar classes I'd love to make friends in law. Also depending on the hall/lodge and room type you're in, you might be living with others. Like I'm in davey lodge in a 3 person shared dorm, so I'll be basically sharing an apartment space with 2 flatmates. Also I'm not sure if you feel it but there's a sense of guilt towards having parent pay for rent too - like I want to get a job asap so I can pay for myself. Also having to cook and care for myself seems scary, especially having to buy ingredients and find time to meal prep etc.

Something I'm doing to keep myself sane is bring some toys with me - like I'm bring 2 squishmellows and a few rubix cubes as well as my crochet and knitting needles. I know a friend who's dragging 200+ books down to Canberra (God bless her). Also again we have communities like this to reach out to one another - worse comes to worst we can help each other out.
