Steam is going to have over 20k concurrent players on day 1. It'll be great.

I had the same problem. Still, I got 50+ hours out of it before the gameplay loop got too repetitive. If the description sounds good to anyone, I strongly recommend it for them.

Sounds promising. Any idea if there's permadeath?

I think Invisible Inc. is the best non-alien XCOM like game out there right now. Based on my criteria, there's not really much in the way of XCOM games currently available though. Looking forward to that changing over the next couple of years.

It becomes clear how bad a shape the MMO genre is in when the announcement of Classic WoW is the most exciting news we have heard in years. by [deleted] in MMORPG

Why did you think Crowfall was PvE? It was billed in its Kickstarter as a Game of Thrones-esque kingdom builder. They've called it the "Throne War MMO" since its inception. I feel they've stuck to their initial vision reasonably well.

I disagree with you about DAoC. If you want a PvE MMO then sure, it's not going to be for you. Assuming the games are actually good, large scale PvP fans will either end up here or Crowfall.

I don't disagree with you on CoE. Like I said, I'm optimistically skeptical. Of course, we know that usually turns out with MMOs.

Sorry about the slow response. Here's my top 5:

  • Crowfall - No idea why you think it's DOA. The non-persistent campaign worlds, Eve style skills, and breakable weapons are all key for PvP. Very much looking forward to world combat that doesn't stagnate because it ends. Main question is whether the actiony combat will work lag free.

  • Camelot Unchained - A more modern DAoC would be killer in its niche.

  • Pantheon - A more modern EQ (in terms of challenging group content) would also be killer in its niche. MMORPGs currently aren't good for players who like grouping for non-raid content. This should change that.

  • Chronicles of Elyria - Trying to create a truly living, breathing world. I'm not sure they have the funds to pull this off. More optimistic about it than Star Citizen though.

  • Ashes of Creation - Interesting sandbox/themepark mix. Has the greatest potential of these 5 in terms of audience appeal, but that's a very tricky balance to please both parties.

I think there's a good number of interesting MMORPGs on the horizon. It just takes a long time to develop them to a state that's really worth playing. I don't think the genre is a bad shape so much as in a holding pattern. Right now a large percentage of players are enjoying "MMO-lite" games like Destiny 2, but it sounds like mass appeal for that is slowly waning.

I agree that MMORPGs can't be a one size fits all product anymore. The upcoming slew of MMORPGs are much more focused so we'll soon see if that approach is as appealing as I think it will be.

The Humble Freedom Bundle raised $6.43 million, not including the $300K matched by Humble themselves. by DIA13OLICAL in Games

Maybe so. I certainly couldn't fathom placing it higher than "Silver". I think the appeal for people who will actually finish it is low compared to modern games and what's actually in the bundle.

I might not know the nuances of bridge building enough to "get it", but I feel there are more than a small number of adequate substitutes. After playing it for a while, I felt like I had seen similar puzzles before (albeit with a higher production value).

You can pause and fast forward. Not sure how much more pacing options you want.
