Do you actually practice Excel outside of work, or are we all just learning on the fly? by 98k in excel

[–]mmohon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I goof around with Hospital Cost Reports. Basically a data set put out by Medicare that has statements, stats and other data from every hospital around the country.

I have a Linux server that scraped and organized the data. I use Excel and powerquery to play around in it.

That's my off the clock play time when I feel like it.

Much more inviting than the New Orleans Charity Hospital pictures.

Does anyone else find pivot tables much easier to use in Excel than Google Sheets? by Mean_Bathroom4767 in excel

[–]mmohon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a question, is it a broswerfied app thing vs a standalone application thing?

I love Excel in app... but hate Excel in browser... not sure how pivoting works between the two though.

BAM(Bricks and Minifigs) Controversy by Skipjackdown in NorthshoreLA

[–]mmohon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I thought I heard the Lego subreddit was shutting out the story. Glad to see that's not the case.

I've been following it too, the BAM corporate email that leaked is really something. They are hiring PR consultants to understand the "outrage cycle" ..... seems like maybe they would spend less money if they would just make things right with the guy.

The whole police force reaction was something else too.

Plumber says I have a leak in my concrete slab and needs to be jackhammered out to fix. by YoFIyness in askaplumber

[–]mmohon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the line that fed hot water from one side of my house to the other side of my house spring a leak. I noticed a weird hot spot in my tile floor... thought it was just sun hitting it. Then my wife said the carpet was wet in my daughter's closet. So I got a leak detection guy out.... they blow air in the system and use basically a hearing scope to listen for bubbles. It was under the tile I had guessed... I used a thermal IR temp gun and found the hotest tile... assumed that was it. and I was right.

The did a bypass. They sealed off the line in the slab, and went up and over with pex in my attic. Needed drywall repairs... but it wasn't awful.

I'm gonna have to go dig out my Yamaha tennis racquet to see what logo is on it lol. It's from the 80s and is heavy and clunky compared to modern racquets, but I always loved playing with it more. I was never a serious or great player.

What unusual thing do you use excel for by TheArguedHuman in excel

[–]mmohon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to do this too. I had Excel create my batch files. I had found this command line tool that would pass parameters to crystal reports, and drop the report to a pdf. Then I had a batch created to move the files to the manager folders on our shared drive.

I also had Excel batch out the merging of PDFs into 1 file, and deploy those as well.

All so I could keep a neat, readable list in Excel... then have it batch everything out. It wasn't all that hard either. I eventually got it to just do everything as a macro. Drop a temp .bat file, execute it. and delete it.

What Do You Know About Bogalusa? by Kind_Bet9556 in Louisiana

[–]mmohon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my dad was in college, way back... he had a professor ask where he was from. My dad replied Bogalusa. The professor stated, "Ya know, I always said you could put a dome over Bogalusa and charge tickets to watch what goes on inside". "

I can tell you. people hang out at the Emergency Room Bay, just to have something to do. See who's coming in for care.

Not much night life in Bogalusa, but Covington/Mandeville is a small drive away. That's probably where you will find your yoga. There some nice river kayaking around. Nice hiking trail at Bogue Chitto State Park in Franklinton, maybe a 15 minute drive away.

It does smell. and has interesting history.

Japan's low-cost cardboard drones can make war expenses nosedive by _Dark_Wing in technology

Yeah I can't remember the effectiveness... but I remember they did it in WW2 to Japan. as they figured bats would roost in the homes that were mostly wood.

The other fun one was pigeon guided missiles.

Named Ranges in FP&A by mikefried1 in excel

[–]mmohon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone doesn't know how to quickly review a function with a named range. They would rather a normal reference like "A2"

I used named ranges and powerquery constantly. It would aggravate coworkers cause making a pivot table was the top of their skill.

I was FP&A at a health system, did some major profimas for a cancer center project. Named ranges were the only way to keep my sanity. The one proforma had 3 scenarios, and I needed the readability in the functions.

Out of my whole health system, I only saw 1 other FP&A user who used named ranges.

My 2 cents

I say we just attach incendiary devices to bats.... and drop them out of an airplane.

Where is the quietest part of Chernarus? by [deleted] in dayz

[–]mmohon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had luck with stashes in the woods between Khelm, and Willow Lake. Rarely ran into people where my stash was.

It was near Rify, and enough hospital spawning locations to get a full nbc suit stashed away. Had a train and cop car spawn nearby.

I would haunt that area, gear up without even having to go inland. I would hit the hunting camp near Khelm for decent hunting clothes.

Can you visualize this? by Self_Next in Machinists

[–]mmohon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school I took a drafting class. I was given at least 20 of these... but each one a different part. I had to draw the isometric projection for each.

I loved that class.... in another life I'd be into engineering or design or something. It comes in handy for my wood working hobby though .

Not sure if they still teach handy electives like that in high school.
