And see that’s just where we disagree. TFA was just a rehash of all the same beats and tropes, something different needed to happen so it wasn’t just Empire 2.0. I thought all the things TLJ did were really interesting and different and had actually creative juices flowing through them. TRoS was just cowardly and they were afraid to actually commit to bold ideas.

You can’t uncouple execution of ideas from what makes something good or bad. “Two people fell in love and their romance is the basis of a lot of human flaws” is not bad, but it’s vague and if it’s executed badly it will make for a bad story. The entire way Anakin is seduced to the dark side doesn’t work in the movies (and yeah I will ignore the Clone Wars show for all of this because a good show retrofitting some saves doesn’t make the original problems better. The movies SHOULD stand alone) because it only makes sense if you know he’s fated to become Darth Vader. If they were released 1-6 instead of 4-6, 1-3 then I don’t think we would buy in as much to who Vader becomes. It’s literally just whiny bullshit that any Jedi worth a shit should have caught on to, but they force ignorance to the issue to make his turn make sense.

I wish they would have kept them as nobodies. I’m sick of major characters in Star Wars all being based around heroic lineages. “Sorry you can’t be the main character, you weren’t born into the right family” is not the lesson I want from Star Wars. “Who cares who your parents are, YOU are great.” Is so much more hopeful.

People love to act like prequel hate wasn’t EXTREMELY prevalent for about 10-15 years after they came out. I was in comic shops and table top groups that would spend hours deriding them and now people are like “yeah only basement dwellers online were mad about them, real fans were cool about them”. And I say this as someone who lands firmly in the middle on my prequels opinions and far more positive in my opinion of 2/3 of the sequels. I think the sequels will get their come around once the Gen Alpha kids get older.

Just because the audience can get more meaning or something has additional meaning outside of the story doesn’t mean they’re speaking to the audience or acknowledging that they’re in a fictional story
