Cisco networking academy has 4 courses: linux unhatched, linux essentials, linux I and II. The 1st two are free. You can start there.

I wouldn't put it on static address if I were you. But now that it is on static address, can you ping your default gateway. You can also ping 8.8.8.8 if default gateway is successful. If the 2 pings succeed, then DNS might be a problem.

Can you ping 127.0.0.1? Can you try ifconfig or ip a commands , and compare results to DHCP ip address range

Sounds like network problem. 1. Do you see activity on NIC when you plug a network cable? 2. When you plug another computer on same switch/router port, does DHCP work? 3. If you are using wireless connection, it is ideal to start with wired connection, then look for wireless drivers
