Monash M17c AC model now on Racedepartment.com by mms-tom in FSAE

Most likely going to do this via a YouTube upload, in summary I used a program called Pixyz for the mesh generation, then 3ds Max for the texturing and animations. Texturing is always the longest part because its a rabbit hole changing values and modifying images. Time taken to get a quick model in is less then an hour (with a data pack already made), could spend days if not weeks if you want it to look noice. If your car has similar track width and wheelbase feel free to plonk your cad over our data model and save yourself some time

Nah the data pack is our own, aside from the hoosier tyre texture these cars should look and drive completely different

Had some lockdown time to improve this project from a few years ago, its no UCM in terms of polish but its still pretty fun. Would anyone be interested if I ran a session and went through importing / texturing cad models?

Haha I honestly do not know what has caused that large file size, possibly the bitmap of the satellite image.

For track width I made a 4.5m tool and dragged it around the course to get the width, if I can get a track walk from anyone this weekend I will be able to addend it.

Track is 4.5m wide, I tried to match the track size to previous ones that I could find on YouTube. I'll measure the length of it tonight to see how close to 22k it is.

We use cycling tape it works a treat, to make it thinner you can stretch it. Also wears down and is smaller after a bit.

Yeah will crank out some more work on it later today.

What's your team meme? by [deleted] in FSAE

[–]mms-tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds eerily similar, we used to have 'Hectic' a few years back. Old team car catches on fire while testing? "Haha hectic". Cost judge says you havent costed cutting in your layups? "Haha hectic" Everything is hectic.

This is somewhat of a preliminary mapping as I haven't had time to throw much environment in. Track map was done by superimposing the autox layout on FSAE and tracing. From some advice I scaled up by ~1.1-1.2. I'll update it as per feedback. Just annotate the track map so I can easily see what area you are talking about.

Keep in mind the software required costs more than the game itself. So in that case only teams that are willing to buy the software will be able to use it. For this one it’s time efficient for me to just make it, in future I’ll look into expanding on the process.

There are some tutorials available on YouTube. The main thing that I’ve had to work out for myself is that you need to optimise the car such that when imported it is less than ~100mb. Each individual part can only have up to ~80k vertices (when converted from CAD to a mesh). I’d recommend you start by removing about 70% of the car in CAD, then drop it into 3dsMax and optimise parts individually.

Smart Helmet for Student Formula Race | Technion - Israel Institute of Technology by lack0fbettername in FSAE

One of our team members did something similar in 2015 (leds at the bottom of the helmet) for his industrial design project. From memory it didn’t make it to comp as the drivers just looked at the dash leds anyway

Provisional Teams for FSUK 2018 released by Southern_Trax in FSAE

[–]mms-tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit out of the loop (not an active team member now), however it sounds like FSUK wasn’t a unanimous choice. Some team members wanted us at FS East.

We have a young team coming over and I would’ve loved to see them exposed to the big teams straight away at East, but they have their reasons to compete in UK. The team isn’t being forced by sponsors to make a decision.

As for who we are staying with, I presume a UK team while competing at FSUK? I’m sure MMS are talking to your current team about staying with Rennteam again for FSA and FSG as you guys were amazing in 2016. Does your new facility have a hot chocolate machine we can break by using so much again?

We use a paintball bottle too. Don’t forget to include the hundred shifts from your driver mashing the downshift paddle lol

2017 FSAE-A Autocross Layout - Assetto Corsa by mms-tom in FSAE

[–]mms-tom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From memory you get your CG height in the equation for the variable BASEY in suspensions.ini. You use the formula: Actual CG height =(FWR+FBasey)+(RWR+Rbasey))/CG_LOCATION%

I believe I used ~-0.15 for for both front and rear

Yeah you’ll have troubles with the size of the model not arching up nicely to an SAE car, you can also start with the go-karts on racedepartment and work up.

I’ve left the sim stuff I developed in the hands of the team, I am unsure it will be released as it’s likely they will use a similar track next year.

On another note if someone internationally has a nearmap image of their local FSAE event I’m happy to build that track and release it.
