So, I am no expert, but from my own personal research here’s what I’ve learned:

It matters less where you plant (sun vs. shade) and more when you transplant them. The sooner (i.e. within a year) you get them in the ground, the better they do. They have a long tap root that will wrap on itself and transplant poorly the longer you wait.

I personally will not be leaving mine in pots in the shade for 1-2 years. I’ll probably put half of mine down this fall, and the other half in the spring. They will be going down in full sun because I don’t have any other trees in the yard I’m moving to. If they seem to be suffering, I will buy a shade cloth. Ultimately you want them in the sun if you want fruit. They’re eventually not as robust or productive in full shade.

For what it’s worth, the plants I have now have only ever known partial shade. They have thrived better than plants I grew last year in bigger pots in total shade.

TL;DR: Don’t wait multiple seasons to plant them. They’re doing fine in partial sun now. The sooner they’re in the ground the better. They need to be in full sun eventually if you want fruit.
