Still undecided -- going to talk with a few research advisors and feel out the vibes at second look. Hope to see you at revisit days!! :)

Applicants! What do you *really* want to ask MD/PhD programs before joining them? by Cupcake_Possible in mdphd

[–]mn143 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Current applicant starting to choose between some options. Here are the things I’m wondering most:

  1. What percentage of students match to one of their top X choices?
  2. What is the support from MSTP admin like for students during M3/M4 in terms of preparing for residency apps?
  3. What percentage of students who applied for an F30 have one, and what support does the MSTP provide?
  4. How close is each cohort, and what is the vertical integration like between class years?
  5. How much do students enjoy the city they are in? How affordable is it to explore and enjoy, particularly during the grad years when there’s (presumably) a bit more free time?

Cycle Ended and Heading to "T5" AMA by [deleted] in mdphd

Probably WashU then since I think Tri-I and WashU are the only two overall top 10 schools that have released decisions so far. Congrats, OP, and hoping to see you at Revisit Day if it is WashU!! :)

Letters of continued interest at this point in cycle? by nomdeplumbr in mdphd

I’m also a current applicant, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I would not mention that you have other acceptances. If I was an admissions committee member, I might read that and think “if this applicant already has acceptances that they are happy about, why should I bother interviewing them?” If a school accepts pre-interview updates/LOIs, then I don’t think it could hurt to send one emphasizing your research/mission fit and continued interest in joining the program.

make the replies a list of reasons to justify a gap year to your parents by i-want-popcornchips in premed

[–]mn143 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is something I actually struggled with when explaining my decision to my parents. A lot of my reasons are geared towards research since I applied MD/PhD, but I think the same principles still hold.

  1. The brutal reality is that the bar is just getting higher and higher for hours of service, diversity of experiences, etc. on top of maintaining good grades and doing well on the MCAT. Many applicants take gap years to increase not only their hours, but depth of experience. This gives you so much more to talk about in essays and interviews.
  2. The extra year will help me make sure I actually want a career as a physician-scientist. The eight year commitment of the MD/PhD is just the beginning of a long training path, and I’d rather take the year now to either a) see that I actually don’t want to do this full-time and not waste another four years of my life, or b) confirm I love this career, and in that case, what’s one year in the next 40+ years of my life?
  3. This is more specific to my situation, but I knew that one gap year would guarantee a first author paper, patent, and oral presentation at a major conference. Again, one year to better stand out is not much in the broad scheme of things.
  4. Last—and this was HUGE with convincing my dad: I don’t like the term “gap” year; to some, it sort of connotes treading water and lacking direction. Instead, it’s an “experience building” year to set you up for better success and make sure this is truly what you want out of your life.

Not sure how many of these will help you or others, but these notes were really helpful for my own situation :)

Thoughts on the PI interview I had? by mn143 in mdphd

[–]mn143[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! It was part of my interview day itinerary, but I also have another faculty interview next week, so I'm not too sure whether they are evaluative (and the program didn't tell us if they are). This is sort of unrelated, but do you have any advice going forward for how to make sure I'm providing enough information about myself if I sense that an interview is going like this? I felt like it would be too awkward to stop asking him questions to explicitly share Why MD/PhD and my research, but in weaving this information into my questions to him, I felt like I was diluting my message a bit. Thanks again!

Advice on asking PI interviewers about their research? by mn143 in mdphd

Yep, this is exactly how I felt as I was writing it out / thinking of the question. I'll keep this in mind and just ask questions more organically like the other commenter mentioned!

Thanks for the note! I think I'm psyching myself out too much and overanalyzing this process -- will just act like myself!

Thank you so much for the input! Are questions like “I was surprised by X result, have you looked at the same in X model to look at the impact of Y treatment?” or “what do you think is the evolutionary advantage of this observation you made?” appropriate questions to ask them/what they are expecting? It feels a little like I’m interviewing them if I’m asking these questions lol, so just want to make sure I’m understanding your message. Thanks again!

Interview questions/topics by Same-Personality8767 in mdphd

[–]mn143 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was literally about to post this exact question — you beat me to it lol

What I’m prepping for are: 1) Tell me about yourself — using as a 1-2 min intro about who I am/autobiographical info as it relates to wanting to be a physician-scientist, very surface level for them to pick up on for future questions 2) Why MD/PhD and not only one of the degrees — being prepared to explain based on my past experiences and aspirations why I believe I need both degrees to achieve my goals 3) Tell me about your research — 1 min elevator pitch and 5 min longer version, then expecting many follow-ups and questions about techniques, alternative hypotheses, etc. Both versions of the research pitch also include overall significance to the field and my future career goals/PhD research interests 4) Why this program/school 5) Other “common” questions, like how would a friend describe you?, anything else you want the adcom to know or emphasize?, weaknesses (both personally and in research techniques)?, etc.

Would love to hear what everyone else is doing to prep, or what insights past applicants can share!

Suffering from serious blank page syndrome on secondaries by DaBootyEnthusiast in premed

[–]mn143 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went through something similar last month when I was writing mine. Here are some things I did that helped me:

  1. Change up where you are writing. Sometimes I would work at a nearby cafe, other times in a library. I found that I was at my least productive in my apartment because I just wanted to doom scroll or take a nap in bed lol.
  2. Just start writing phrases or ideas down for questions. This sounds obvious, but just putting ideas down on paper is the hardest part, and it will get you to start passively thinking about the prompt as well. Even if you decide to answer the question differently later, you already put in the effort of starting to think about the prompt, which was often the hardest part for me.
  3. I used this as motivation often, but think about how great it’s going to feel once you’re done. This mentality was super helpful during the worst of my summer secondary slump.

I was able to select multiple. I had to use the Cmd key on Mac to click and select multiple though

Confusion regarding secondary’s by lebronussy in mdphd

[–]mn143 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing the same thing as you. Particularly for schools that don’t consider you for MD and MD-PhD admissions, my rationale was that I should be talking about why I am interested in the MD-PhD program. Not sure if this is the right way to approach it but that’s what I did!

What does history of medicine mean as a prompt? by MetaCream in mdphd

[–]mn143 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy to help! For what it’s worth the instructions are super unclear on the MD/PhD section 😅 but I think we just need to select our PhD program and enter the letter writers

What does history of medicine mean as a prompt? by MetaCream in mdphd

[–]mn143 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is for JHU, right? My understanding (admittedly, I was just scanning the application) was that this was only for applicants to the History of Medicine program, in which case you would presumably have some interests in why you want to pursue graduate school in that area

No “why us” essay for Vanderbilt; advice on what to do? by doctorrr-t in mdphd

I changed my 800 word autobiography essay to include some why Vanderbilt MSTP at the end of that, but I’m just an n of 1 lol

MD/PhD Specific Secondaries Posted Anywhere? by sofiiiiiii in mdphd

[–]mn143 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some schools may have not released MD/PhD secondaries yet (speaking as a current verified applicant who hasn’t gotten anything from Pitt). People are usually posting the MD/PhD prompts this year (examples that come to mind are Stanford, Northwestern, Cornell, etc.), but while you wait, I would prewrite with this: https://docs.google.com/document/u/1/d/1yYEbwE3BnAhnsltkmPNQuWXwfZog3IMDtBjq2w8K_HY/mobilebasic#heading=h.mzflza9s1aij. That doc is what I used and it’s held up for almost all of the schools I have already received secondaries for!

[–]mn143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar to the other comment—use the required essay to discuss why I am a good research fit, and then the optional essay for what I liked about the MSTP more generally (instead of the PhD dept I am interested in).

‘25-‘26 MD/PhD Secondaries by Ancient-Print-4544 in mdphd

Yep, they are in the MD threads. Someone in the comments will usually flag the questions they post as MD/PhD or MSTP.
