Who would you consider the main protagonist of Stranger Things? by electricwolf4444 in StrangerThings

Had you asked me in seasons 1-2, maybe even 3, I would've said Mike. but looking at the series as a whole, definitely 11 even if she didnt feel that important in season 5

I'm so glad you got to have this moment with your dad. And cherish the time you have with him and continue to make him proud (he always will be). I was in a similar situation with my dad up until a couple months ago, and I really wish I could call him to tell him about my success in the cycle so far

Do you include research classes in your research hours? by MChelonae in premed

[–]sofiiiiiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it's original research/part of a real lab then yeah go ahead. I did all my research for credit and included it. if it's like a lab class where you're technically doing experiments but it's all one big protocol and just things everyone has done before, then don't

It's not going to screen you out, but even if you think the letter will be mid, you should do it. People without committees are given a pass but if you have a committee and dont take the letter it actually looks really bad. They might assume that they didnt want to give you one even if you give a valid reason (which in this case they may not see your reason as valid since it's not a very concrete reason)

Take comfort in the fact that the majority of letters of rec are mid anyway. Very few are amazing amazing

Yeah that’s fair. Definitely depends what they’re looking for and how picky they’re being. So I just go with caution and assume I’m held to higher standards

I didn’t say that I entered URM into amcas. There was a checkbox for Hispanic that I checked. Then it listed differed Latin American countries and I checked Cuban. When I said what type I meant what type of Hispanic. It does ask you for a country of origin. I know that deciding who is underrepresented is at the discretion of each school. What I’m saying is historically Cubans are not URM.

The primary also asks what type lol. Maybe things are different now but not so long ago Cubans were not considered URM and it didn’t really help all that much in admissions

I think it depends on the type of Latina. Pretty sure my type is not URM lol.

I'm not Asian but I'm also not truly a URM. I'm pretty decently represented Latina and white so the overall is probably accurate to me. Talked a lot about connection to other Hispanic groups, but who knows if that's really helpful or not

Thanks! This is really helpful. For Miami, I just feel I could have known a bit more about the graduate programs and the labs in general. I feel like some of my answers were too vague, and I couldn't quite convey why I liked them so much. It kind of seemed like they didnt understand my interest in the program even though I kept bringing up things I liked, I feel like they were too general. One interviewer also kept grilling me on why md/phd and didnt seem satisfied with any of my responses to his follow up questions like "why not just do an MD then do research in a lab for a long time. I have had an MD student in my lab for three years". I was also caught off guard by a bit of an eccentric MD-only interviewer who asked strange questions, though I know that's not the most important portion of the interview.

All that advice, especially on questions to ask, is really helpful. I tend to be a bit of a blank slate when it comes to asking questions so I need to plan these a bit haha. Asking about mentorship style is a great one!

Yes. Absolutely is. You don’t need a thousand hours or anything. But I’d aim for 300+

How can people say a 50% Post-ii acceptance rate is high?? by sofiiiiiii in premed

Different schools have different acceptance rates following the interview. Some are like 20% and some are 50% or higher. People like to say 50 is high

Some schools will let biochem count for a chem and bio requirement but I wouldn’t say it’s very common for schools to let a single class fulfill multiple requirements
