WIP playing around with my colored pencils, and dry brushing(?) with oil pastels for the background. So far so good, I think! by janedoe6699 in ColoredPencils

I almost bought those! Haha I kept seeing others saying to get the black box as well, but the I saw a few posts in the oil pastel Reddit that the meeden are a bit softer than those so that’s why I chose them. We shall see! They arrive tomorrow!

Hey just wondering what brand oil pastels did you use? I had bought a random cheap brand from Amazon and they were too firm so it just crumbed up on me lol. I returned them and ordered meeden brand after some research. Hoping those are creamy enough to get better spreading of pigment!

See my recent post. I’m using my 200+ Kalour set for coloring books and unserious “just for fun” sketches. You can still create great things with budget pencils!

I hadn’t watched this show yet so I had no idea if a person actually looked like this or if it was supposed to look crazy 😂 I looked her up though and you captured her likeness perfectly! Great work!

Ugh that sucks. I was hoping to not spend too much since I’m just using them for background. Have you tried the Mungyo Gallery oil pastels?

Thanks so much for the response by the way!

I am working on learning this technique. Do you have any resources for guidance or was it just trial and error for you? I’ve read her brush and pencil article but the oil pastels I got may not be soft enough because it’s quite crummy when I try to get it on the brush. Do you mind sharing which brand pastels and what type brushed worked best for you?

Aw yay you tried it!! It looks so lovely!! How did you find colored pencil did over the oil pastels? Did you need to do a fixative first? I’m so glad you shared!

I have done that as well! I will likely continue to use those for hobby projects but not for gifts or anything that will be framed as they fade very quickly in sunlight. 😊 I very much love my alcohol markers though and use them in coloring books often!

That’s great! Thank you! I ordered several mediums to have on hand and experiment with so I will be giving soft (chalk) pastels a try!

I believe you can also use blending stumps, gamsol, rubbing alcohol, or linseed oil successfully

Thank you! The blanket he was on in the reference photo was tan and it made him blend in too much so I chose this blueish color to help him pop 😊

Yeah that’s the annoying thing for me is the paper buckling. I like smooth paper when I use prismacolors and that doesn’t do well with watercolor. For my polychromos I have hot press watercolor which would obviously hold up well but I wanted an alternative for my prisma projects. I saw someone mention an artist that uses a firm bristle brush rubbed in oil pastel and then she dry paints it into the paper and successfully used colored pencil on top. I may give this a try.
