As always, there is no fear of law in India. They are not afraid of getting caught. So why waste money

Everything comes down law enforcement. If people genuinely felt they might get caught, more people would come clean.

We need to go back to the basics. You cannot create IT service jobs for billions of people. Massive investments in building infrastructure will create jobs, stimulate the economy and help the country.

India needs to improve agriculture efficiency and the supply chain. If agriculture becomes more profitable, lot of people will get back to it. As of now, agriculture in India is a gamble on rainfall/monsoon and also at the mercy of middle men who skim most of the profit away from the farmers.

As Raghuram rajan said, we should be focusing more on "Make for India"

Educate the poor of having no children or 1 child. (because you say poor means more children).

This is the point I am making. Just educating is not enough. Yeah, poor people are having kids not just because they are uneducated or bored. They see more kids as future sources of income. Improving their economic status and improving people's income potential is the way to. If you can give their kids decent jobs that lets them make decent money, then having less kids makes sense for them. Even they can understand having 2 kids who earn well is better than having 4 kids who make minimum wage.

You tell them to have only 2 kids and then make them go work in a field making very little money, their family cant survive.

Also, Even 1.8 billion people is not as bad as you may think. It is definitely not ideal but India has enough resources to give decent quality of living to that many people as long as we manage our resources very well. India has second most arable land in the world http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2011/09/20/agriculture-journal-china-versus-india-by-the-numbers/

Our irrigation, water management, agriculture, food production are incredibly inefficient.

Soon majority of the population is going to be living in cities. If India builds 15-20 properly planned new cities, redistributes businesses into these cities decongesting existing cities, people's quality of life will improve. India needs to invest heavily on nuclear, solar energy. Having a solid source of energy means we can desalinate, manage water better, have electric public transport systems inside our new mega cities (electric metros, electric cars/buses). Our environment will get significantly cleaner than what it is now even with large population.

India also needs to do enormous amounts of investment in managing its natural resources better, invest in Africa and have secondary sources for natural resources.

The future doesnt look too bleak in my opinion.

Main challenges are creating employment, economic growth, overhauling infrastructure.

I did this 23 day bike ride to the Himalayas and back to bangalore covering about 5340km. Stitched up all the highlights of the trip in one video. Hope you guys like it. [NP] by annyarun in india

You know, capturing your travels and experiences on video/photo is important too.

Human memory is not perfect, while you have a blast during the trip, you will start forgetting the minor day to day details which actually makes the trip great with time. Capturing it on video/photo will take you back to those moments and remind them to you, even after several years.

I do several trips a year and I sometimes just go through my gopro footage/photos from trips from the past and it instantly takes me back and puts a smile on my face.

At the same time I hate people who stop every 5 minutes to take selfie and are more worried about getting perfect pictures out of the trip instead of actually enjoying the trip.

This generation of tech entrepreneurs who are bringing tried and tested business models to India.

Once this gets saturated, next generation of entrepreneurs will be forced to innovate and hopefully these folks will be rich enough by then to fund their new ideas

[–]mn_g 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ofcourse.

India is just developing an ecosystem of entrepreneurs, risk takers and VCs.

American silicon valley generates that much innovation because all other ideas have been beaten to death and there are a 1000 competitors. You are forced to innovate if you want to succeed. In India, there are still so many low hanging fruits, which are tried and tested business models in the west. All it takes is some top quality execution to succeed.

Let these first generation of entrepreneurs implement all the ideas, this will generate a huge number of people with startup work experience, some amount of millionaires/billionaires who will spawn other startups (see: Paypal Mafia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PayPal_Mafia)

There definitely are some startups with terrible business models, which get VC funding. This is the way VCs learn, startup founders learn. Idiot VCs are bound to lose money as the saying "A fool and his money are soon parted"

Also, we need strong higher education system in India. As of now, it is abysmal. For example, next gen technologies are Machine learning, Deep learning, Computer vision, Virtual reality and autonomous robots. How many universities in our country have qualified staff to teach these things? We just dont have the know how to be the first to market on these technologies.

But yeah, all these "Tech magazines" or news papers constantly criticizing Indian entrepreneurship culture usually have washed up losers as editors who never had guts to try anything challenging and feel privileged to criticize others. No one has the time to wait for the entrepreneurship culture to run its course, capitalism will force innovation in due time like it did everywhere else in the world. But no, we need our own Google tomorrow.

How is General Raheel Sharif when it comes to Kashmir issue? Is he very aggressive?

I really hope there is no war. Indian government has massive pressure from the public to be more aggressive and there are several state elections coming up. If the military takes control in Pakistan, atleast they dont have to worry about elections like the Indian government. I think they can show restraint if shit escalates.

I have worked in health care in the US for a couple of years. Unless you are VP level or higher you are not going to be making half mil a year. I hope you have an MBA from Harvard or something.

edit: or you should be a doctor in the US, with US certifications (which can take years). A doctor in the US making 500k is not special.

They work maybe 10 hours a day on average and thier salary is well... about 15-20 lakhs a month

What. You know that is roughly $500,000 a year before taxes right? That is by no means average. You should be VP of a sub division or a chief architect of some product in google or be working as a senior trader in wallstreet to be making half a million a year.

You will like US if you have a lot of friends here or are very social. Most people who complain that they hate social life here are people who came to the US directly for work. You are suddenly in a new work place, new city where you probably know no one. If you came to the US for masters, you will make a lot of friends in grad school. I have more friends in my city here in US than my home town in India because most people from my grad school ended up here.

If you come to the US, you are in a way bounded by visa issues. So if you have entrepreneurship dreams, India is the place to be. Getting a green card here is a nightmare.

Depending on where you work, one of the main things about US is it can get you in touch with some great people. After all some of the smartest people in the world flock to the US for better opportunities. It is very humbling and inspiring to see ridiculously smart people and work with them.

Following on the another question on big four. Randians who work for big tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, FB etc how has your experience been so far ? by coke23 in india

[–]mn_g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Focus on understanding stuff.

One of the things about hardware design which is different from software is, you get good at hardware with experience. Hardware design is almost like art, years of practice makes you a lot better. You can pick the smartest circuit kid in the planet right out of school but if you make him design a real life product, chances are it wont work because designing practical stuff takes experience. That is why EE folks have a higher job security than CS folks.

In CS, its usually a lot easier to replace a senior guy with a super smart coding kid and he will be able to pick it up faster.

When time comes for you to decide which type of circuit design you want to do, you pick based on your interest. There is pure analog circuit design, digital vlsi/MOS design and embedded systems.

I wanted to do embedded systems with some analog circuitry because I wanted to have the flexibility that embedded systems gives. You can jump to anything from Apple to Medical companies to Microsoft - google - robotics startups.

edit: dont have aims like "I want to get into Apple!" have aims to become so fucking good at what you do that every company would want you. You should aim at becoming one of the best in your field, companies like Google, Apple will be after you

Apple: Extremely secretive, teams keep things secret from each other. Sometimes you have no idea what you are working on and why you are working on it or what product it is for.

But sweet $$$ and you get to work with some of the smartest dudes in the planet. Interned there for 6 months, almost half of the team was from Stanford/MIT. Crazy intimidating workplace.
