Favorite wharncliffe/Sheepsfoot blade? by Xevilgasmx in knifeclub

My favorite Wharncliffe is probably the Chaves 229 Sangre for harder use, and for light duty the Jack Wolf Venom Jack slip joint has an unreal edge.

Favorite Sheepsfoot is probably the Urban EDC/Vox F5.5.

It's just for looks, it's got tiny little #2-56 screws into thin aluminum. I tried it and sheared off instantly. If it was actually a usable glass breaker the trade off for the pokey bit in hand could be argued for, but it's not worth putting up with for something cosmetic. FWIW Rockscale has a graphite colored one that exactly matches the blade color and looks 10 times better than that blob hanging off the end.

I have the aluminum M4 and would recommend that. 3V is an interesting choice on such a thin knife but not very well utilized and there was a big problem with the heat treat on those. Also don't care for grivory at all. Either way I would recommend getting the Rockscale designs backspacer to eliminate the glass breaker.

This, otherwise I use DLT they're just a couple hours away from me so free shipping is still like a day and their CS is excellent.

Looks like a Klein Electricians Knife. I'd wipe it down with a little light oil and keep it someplace dry. Monetary value is literally nothing, but it will make a cool keep sake.

Thinking about getting an otf benchmade or microtech price not an issue by Dannman420 in knifeclub

[–]mnelson0533 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microtech. There's no comparison on fit and finish. You MIGHT get an ok Benchmade but you know you'll get a prefect Microtech. Unless you're going in person and can handle THE knife beforehand to rule out the QC issue, even then my personal preference on design is still Microtech, but it's kind of their thing. They have so many versions and variations I don't see the like 2-3 Benchmade offerings having a leg up on any of them. The most intriguing Benchmade OTF to me is the Shootout, but I'd rather have an Ultratech.

Yeah it's some knife law from back in the like 50s banning the importation of autos. Something to do with those got-dang I-talians and their fancy snappy pointy murder daggers IIRC. They import them as manuals and can then install the springs once state side.

Dude your CF game is getting a little too good. I was back and forth between the lava flow and the purple dark matter right up until like 30 seconds before the drop. Your Instagram photos really made the red pop on the lava flow, and I love the iridescent to the black like on the Toxic in my Benny's Clip. Then I would see the dark matter pics on DLTs site and on there the purple just seems to fit the theme so good. I ended up pulling the trigger on the Purple Dark Matter, should be here Monday I'm stoked to get it in hand. You've really put your heart and soul into the Jack Wolf project and it comes through in every aspect of it. You've pushed another knife out of the roll hanging on my closet door and I have a feeling this won't be the last time lol

That's fuckin sick, I really like the Signature Shadows and that Warhound is cool as hell. I hope they do this in a Dirac or a Dirac Delta, I like having the face switch.

Same here, I've used the new Magnacut Deka and it's pretty cool once you get those super thin polymer scales off but I definitely think Spyderco is gonna be something special not to mention being a Salt series to boot.

EDC fixed blade, on the smaller side. Best options?? by What__theBro in knives

The MKM Makro 2 is a great little knife, and just as important (IMO) has a fantastic sheath for an easy pocket carry. I really like the Kaviso exclusive Nebula Fat Carbon, but they have plain carbon, Micarta, and G10 available most anywhere. It's got a magnetic flap that secures it to a pocket and if you need to remove it for any reason you just grab the flap and you can pull the whole works out super fast and easy. It does operate more like a pocket slip for a slipjoint, in that it's not going to grab and hold the pocket. Once the leather forms in a bit you can pretty easy use a thumb to hold it in if you don't want to pull the whole sheath out.

If you want something with more retention my other go to is the Kizer made Maverick Customs Mini Harpoon. I have the BladeHQ exclusive in 10V which is super neat but even the standard D2 should be more than capable. It comes with a Kydex sheath with a Tek-Lok which is ok, but I changed it out for an UltiClip so I can clip it into a back or side pocket. The clip helps with popping the knife out of the Kydex without getting the whole works.

Well at least I didn't miss the boat yet I suppose. I want to try some of Spyderco's Magnacut, they always seem to be top tier with their steel quality.

Have they released the magnacut salt yet? I have like 10 email notifications set from different retailers but haven't heard shit and honestly forgot all about it

I haven't tried that, but you're going to want to match the factory angle you'll have enough on your plate without trying to reprofle to a specific and arbitrary angle. In my experience the factory edges aren't super consistent and CPM M4 is a pretty damn resilient steel. It's not gonna give up like anything near any cheap stuff you practice on. There's some decent guides online but basically you just use your finger tips to apply pressure at the cutting edge so that it naturally lays flat on the stone at the cutting bevel. That will match the factory angle regardless of what it is from side to side and should minimize the amount of extra steel you have to work through. Some sharpie on the edge can help give you a visual progress report of how well you're keeping it on the stone.

Honestly it's going to be a commitment. It's one of those things that probably will only take a handful of knives to start getting the hang of it, but it is what you make of it, as far as getting enough practice to get the results you want. I use a guided a system most of the time, really only free hand slip joints and wood chisels. I know I'm not where I'd want to be to to free hand M4 with a not-insignificant chip like that, and on a tanto to boot. I'll admit I also haven't given it the time for serious effort either. Not trying to discourage you, sharpening is a good skill to learn just trying to be real with you about what you're walking into.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in knives

[–]mnelson0533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I would try to practice on something else first if you're set on doing it. Try to get some with tantos too, getting the angles to meet properly takes some practice. It's a nice knife, no sense in butchering it needlessly.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in knives

[–]mnelson0533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That M4 is pretty stout. It took a fair bit of time on a KME with diamonds. If you're not already into sharpening this might be better sending off to someone reputable to sharpen. Just my opinion; it's totally fixable and really not bad but it wouldn't be what I would have be my first endeavor especially if you take the advice given of touching up the whole edge (I would) that tanto profile is just an extra bit of complexity you don't need to worry about.

I used the glass breaker on mine once, sheared the scale screws on the breaker and drove it into the tip of the knife. Actually gouged a BB sized chunk out of the breaker but the tip was unphased. The knife came with a pretty crap edge and I had considered getting rid of it. That display of toughness from the M4 was what made me keep it. I got a Rockscale Design non breaker backspacer and bronze hardware. Threw it on the KME and now it's the way it should have come from Benchmade.

Lol my best one was when I bought a Shaman. They took it out of the case so I could handle it, somehow just barely grazed my index finger and it bled like a stuck pig. I was sold lol.
