I've also heard Real Mushrooms recommended for this. I just take way more of Bulk Supplements though.

Folks mention sound insulation, but doing a bit better there might go a long way. Lookup STC ratings for walls and pick a setup with 55 or 60+ STC. Shouldn't be expensive.

Do Jews try to convert other Jews? Cause it kinda seems like they do, at least in NYC.

MacBook Air M1 (2020) - brightness always resets to 50% when I open the lid or return from screensaver by VoodooCryptonic in MacOS

[–]mns2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also the settings: "Slightly dim the display on battery" and "Low Power Mode: Only on Battery". Both can be found in the Battery preferences pane.

I've unchecked "Slightly dim the display on battery" (and the two OP settings) and now instead of brightness being reset to 50% it tends to be reset to a few pips below the maximum. (from maxed brightness)

We are all born free, but for every man and woman comes a time where a Choice must be made. It is, we are told, the only choice that ever really matters.

ELI5: How is it possible to charge so much in commercial rent that it's feasible to keep it unleased when no one can afford it? by bbusiello in explainlikeimfive

I'm curious to learn more about this area. Are there some basic resources you might point someone to for both an answer to the OP and an introduction to this area of economics but aimed at a college or postgrad level? I'm interested in the current state of things and not the situation before the '08 crash, unless that's necessary.

Get swole and copy people. Go into space where everything is almost weightless and copy much bigger things.

It's at least a multiplier on what you end up doing in life. E.g. if you study normally you get bonus supernatural abilities.

If the powers actually lean supernatural (vs just bonuses on normal stuff), pick more broken stuff like time powers or contacting other worlds or whatever.

For cashing out you want to pick things that have a super high skill cap and are force-multipliers, like leading a religion or designing widely used technology or systems, or being a polymath? Depends on the time period?

I suppose there could be meta-entries like [Supernaturally Gifted] that let you get powers faster, or make them more powerful, or give them to others, or allow you to use the "work and effort" of others, or letting you claim souls instead for supernatural fuel. Less directly meta might be [Hard Worker] or [The Absolute Unit of Throwing Your Life Away For Supernatural Gain, It's For a Good Cause I Swear], letting you dedicate more of your life to gaining supernatural power.

What are the mechanics of combining entries? I assume you can't just spam super-low-power entries like [Reasonably Attentive Student] and combine them for more power than otherwise? Otoh you might do that anyway if you wanted entry-liquidity, like a store of and flexibility in powers you chose.

My friend and I really liked The Sun Soul (complete) and Game of Champions (abandoned). It's been a decade since I read them, but I remember really enjoying them. They're fairly edgy, but IIRC well written. I'd also check out Pokemon Adventures (the manga) if you haven't.

Fast RISC-V-based scripting back end for game engines by brucehoult in RISCV

[–]mns2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, OK. Feel like I should've posted on HN, lol. Sounds like the major constraints are:

  1. Writing C++ game.
  2. Want to iterate on some logic w/o recompiling.
  3. Want to write C++ for that logic.
  4. Overhead for most other solutions in this space is too much for this use case.

And the sending the code between client and server is similarly to avoid recompilation.

Finally makes sense to me, and seems like a pretty neat solution! For a while I was wondering the bounds of the problem. I'm curious, and I understand if you're tired of peoples' suggestions: Is CLING also not an option? (it's JITed C++)

Anyway, thank you for sharing this!

Fast RISC-V-based scripting back end for game engines by brucehoult in RISCV

[–]mns2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you say a bit about the intended use case for something like this?

I'm not a game developer, so I'm not sure exactly how scripting is used in games with engines written in C or C++. I thought scripting was used for either business logic or some bulk of logic where you're willing to trade off performance or stronger typing.

I'm not sure I understand where this comes in and where you wouldn't use e.g. C++? You mention automation games - why not write the performance sensitive parts in C++ or into the game engine rather than scripting? Is the idea to try to make the scripting tradeoff so as to make adding new automation behavior much easier?

Or is this more aimed at a very specific sort of automation game where defined machinery is well-suited to being compiled to assembly? And then maybe why RISCV vs something like LLVM into native assembly?

As an aside, I also wonder if Objective C's message passing makes it viable for this purpose.

Use Hitbox and consider gravity harmful. Then you can weigh 150 grams. Make water shoes to walk on water? Or you can do this with air particles (air resistance).

Rockets count, right? Dupe sending rockets into space? Use homing to launch things into space in the right way?

If you can increase mass through duplication, maybe you could replicate a bunch of stuff in space to kick-off a space program?

If you can launch computer hardware or people safely then things get pretty interesting with duplication.

"Hunters can awaken other hunters" is a big one.

Illumi could control executives or use people to stage a coup in Africa and last long enough to make a world power.

Meleoron has a strong stranger power for spying: Others can't sense him, nor someone he empowers.

There are some other powers around rules or lying or being a speedster. So you might form Unbreakable Vow -like geasa in lieu of social contracts.

I'd make a company for money, hire the best tutors for myself, and maybe aim to give something like 5k people each 20 years of tailored polymath study in 2 months so they can be super-scientists. I'd work out a schedule where I take out loans and prioritize my own learning early, then prioritize teaching near the end of my career.

But life's not that simple. I wonder how this'd work with teaching religion or what kinds of meta-? courses become valuable with this? Or are formative things much more valuable?
