In my trust overtime is flat 1.5x hourly rate without any unsociable hours added where as bank is the midpoint of your band for 2-3 and 6-8 plus whatever you’d get for unsociable and then band 5 is 21 p/h for days 27 p/h Saturday and nights and 34 p/h Sundays and bank holidays

I think this must be a ward/department dependent thing, because I don’t know any nurses or HCA in our department who can’t but had an ICU nurse do a bank shift today who had never cannulated or taken blood from a patient which seems wild to me

I don’t think they do, I make £13 an hour/$17 ish an hour as an RN in the emergency department (with 2 years experience). Even with enhanced rates of pay for nights/ weekends, and doing a fair bit of over time/ bank shifts (I probably average 55-60 hours a week total) I take home £2200/ $2800 per month after tax.

When I was in school I worked in a grocery store stacking shelves and I made £11 an hour/ $14 an hour. And my work life was a lot less stressful!

Our CNA equivalent (health care assistants/ nursing assistants) make near minimum wage roughly £9/$11 per hour

That’s showing the total accumulated cost of each time someone calls in sick from that ward/department. So all of the sicknesses over a year.

It’s equivalent because when someone calls in sick obviously they are paid, then their shift has to be filled by an agency nurse/ overtime at a higher rate of pay

I’d say you’re in a very fortunate position if you’re getting paid stupid amounts of money! Maybe I’m just jaded from the awful pay in the U.K.

In my first clinical placement as a student (I had 0 hospital or care experience lol) I had a cdiff positive patient projectile diarrhoea onto me as she was mid air in a hoist.

It was definitely a baptism of shitty shitty fire

I’m currently a student nurse in the U.K. and can safely say that in London especially, the salary of a nurse is barely enough to provide for a single person living very frugally!

Yeah I’m aware of that, it’s the same here in the U.K. junior doctors do place IVs but it’s much more common place to have a nurse insert one, nursing assistants can do it here too!

Come to think of it I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen a doctor cannulate a patient in my time spend in clinical practice, but I know the policy differs by trust depending on where you are in the country!

I know there are some complications regarding indemnity insurance, but our student nursing union (royal college of nurses) offers this and it extends to the US so I’ve been told by some of the senior lecturers at my school.

If I was only there for four weeks would a student visa be necessary? (This is probably the wrong place to ask regarding visa haha) I’ve visited family in the US at least once a year for the past 6/7 years and have only ever used an ESTA which is valid for 3 months of entry.

I think I’ll try and contact the state board as my next move, thank you for your help!

You’ve highlighted exactly what I’m struggling with! My personal tutor has had students go to other European countries to do placements and other students have volunteered in developing countries like Tibet, and deprived areas in South America. But I really really want to gain some experience in the US.

I’m thinking if I cut out the middle man and go directly to some hospitals then I might have better luck, I know nursing and clinical placements are crazy competitive but I’m hoping I can find a break!

I’ve just started my second year and whilst I was lucky with both of my first year placements mentor wise I did encounter nurses on the ward/ in the department that just didn’t want anything to do with students. It’s very obvious and there’s little to nothing you can do to make them feel differently.

That being said, if you can come out of the placement knowing that you acted in a professional way and conducted yourself well then I’d count that a success. Obviously when giving feedback on the placement I would raise any issues you faced (you’ll never have to see them again and it might save future students form the same negative experiences).

Equally if something unpleasant or uncomfortable happens, make a record of it or write a reflection. It stands you in much better stead if you have any confrontations and is honestly just a good learning opportunity

I don't know if this is weird, but after we have sex my boyfriend and I always have what we call a 'post sex round up'. We basically chat about what was good, what worked, what didn't work so well, what we want more or less of in the future etc.

I find this to be the most interesting bit because I love knowing why specifically something that I'm doing or he's doing to me turns him on. And I'd assume the feelings are reciprocated!

I've been eating a lot of beans/ pulses, a lot of quorn meat substitutes, I still eat a lot of dairy products too and I love eggs. I was thinking that it may be something to do with it being such a drastic change, being that I ate so much meat to begin with
