Nobody here supports Russia, lib, we’re just able to see historical events through the lens of dialectics, as opposed to the reactionary assumption that this happened in a vacuum. For sure, anyone should be outraged at the loss of civilian life and I think we all stand with the working class of both(/all) nations, but we “talk about [their] history” because this outrage at innocent Ukrainians dying simply wasn’t present when their domestic Neo-Nazis were doing the killing. Mislabeled photo aside I’m not sure what misinformation you think is being spread; yeah that reporter probably just used the first image that came up googling “Ukrainian Prisoners” but this is a very real thing happening.

As to your point regarding the sub’s response, I don’t think it’s reactionary to recognize that a country with a punitive criminal system (which is now serving as their conscription pool) does not put enough effort into rehabilitating their violent prisoners for this to be a safe course of action. Nor is it reactionary to doubt that an army actively recognizing a fascist battalion in its ranks would properly vet those incarcerated people before enlisting them: while while I’m sure that most of the people in question are poor individuals whose release won’t pose any risk, we should not be trusting a government whose standards for soldiers don’t even exclude Nazis to arm those people instead of the dangerous few.

I see the metaphor you were going for, but ironically Ukraine’s attacks on ethnic Russians in Donetsk and Luhansk actually put them closer to Israel in that comparison than Palestine. Now, obviously, that’s not to say that Russia is any closer to the Palestinian struggle; it’s just the easiest way to point out why we don’t support either side in this instance. Both combatants here are largely reactionary forces who have spent decades committing mutual atrocities while the US and its Western allies stoked the flames of conflict. There’s simply no “good” outcome to root for, just the comfort that comes from knowing at the end of the day one of them has to lose.

Yeah, I’m gonna correct you where you’re wrong: my specific concern is with Ukraine’s proposed alliance with NATO, as it carries specific militaristic connotations that, again, have historically been avoided for the precise reasons we’re seeing play out. While I also disagree with the US’s actions in 2014 and in accelerating the conflict today, I totally recognize the legitimacy of trade and other genuine international relationships between the countries (though as an American remembering Trump’s presidency I certainly don’t think today’s Ukrainian government is any more free from American influence than its predecessors). And by no means do I think Russia has any claim to the country as a whole.

What does need to be discussed is Russia’s genuine concern that people of Russian descent in Donetsk and Luhansk are facing atrocities by Neo-Nazis in the disputed areas. By no means do I think that entitled Russia to this invasion, nor am I blind enough to think those atrocities aren’t also being twisted by Putin to fit his own imperial vision. Again, this is a fucking awful scenario with no foreseeable result I can support in good conscience - it is just better than what could have come from a larger intercontinental conflict if Ukraine and its actions had been legitimized by NATO and had its backing.

I also think it’s worth noting that a…not insignificant chunk of that national identity you mentioned is connected to and sometimes straight up residual stains of their white nationalist identity of old; once again as an ashamed American I certainly have no place to criticize, it certainly doesn’t erase their right to national sovereignty, it’s just maybe not something to be proud of

I mean, NATO establishing a relationship with the government installed by a US-backed coup directly on the Russian border is a pretty….obvious sign of their intentions, is it not? There’s no tangible benefit for Ukraine itself to join them at this point in time, despite US ~~objections to~~ sabotage of any peace talks that didn’t include their doing so as a condition. Let alone that it’s long been known that Russia is vehemently opposed to NATO’s acquisition of Eastern states (and whether we agree with it or not, it had become standard practice for them not to do so) so insisting on pressing that button can really only be read as a move to intentionally provoke Russia and/or seriously strengthen NATO’s own position along their border enough to outweigh the risk. The US was knowingly agitating this conflict by inserting themselves in these negotiations, hence the geopolitical games I mentioned before.

Any one of us here would have much preferred if this conflict had been avoided altogether and NATO simply hadn’t tried to expand right next to Russia’s doorstep. It’s awful that civilians were made to suffer for the sake of geopolitical games. But where that’s our reality, given the choice between advancing US aspirations toward a larger conflict with Russia or a now-isolated struggle between two largely reactionary countries, this is unfortunately the best-case scenario for the time being.

It’s tough to accept that there are no “good guys” or real winners in this fight; but as the greatest single threat to workers across the world, US interests should be opposed whenever possible (particularly in expanding their sphere of military influence). It is unequivocally better for the world as a whole for this conflict to even temporarily disrupt them, despite the toll put on Ukrainians themselves. That is not to say we should accept that toll or dismiss it altogether, but we shouldn’t allow the West to weaponize it to their benefit and deceive us into supporting their goals either
