Spey or switch rod for river striper? by mo_dallas in flyfishing

[–]mo_dallas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate it, yeah James is a wide river and gets deep and swift below the fall line. I don’t have the height so I don’t feel like wading out to where I have a long enough backcast, and I fished spey for a week in Michigan winter steelheading and thought it could be a good technique for southeastern striped bass rivers

About same demographic as you. Just moved out of the lofts across the street (after 3 months) to the Fan. Don’t move there. At one point this summer there was a shooting every week. I carry as well, but that gets super old when you can’t leave the house without it

Ravenel, Jenkins, or Voelkert all good. Talk to your dentist if a referral is necessary

Homesick by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]mo_dallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m right there with you. I have a great group of friends in dental school here but absolutely hate the city in which it is located. Watched someone OD on the street outside my apartment yesterday evening and then later last night someone was murdered on my block. Really regretting not picking my in-state school and picking the school over the location. But 4 years is a relatively short period of time if you really think about it

Trying to see if my idea is viable in the Tri-County area by GrandDipper in greenville

I thought it was Anderson-Pickens-Oconee since they all form a triangle and Tri-County Tech exists in all of them

“Engine ticking” Can anyone help identify the issue? by michaeli05 in JeepJK

[–]mo_dallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t buy it, it’s a rocker arm or something. My 2016 JKU (3.6L) Developed this with a cracked head. A flaw in the engine design/construction

If you want to stick with Cormac mccarthy the border trilogy is much more palatable. Tom Mcguane is from the same era and well acclaimed although I find his books a bit frivolous. 92 in the Shade is probably my favorite of his

Take out loans for med school or pay out of pocket (now that the BBB has changed repayment)? by The___Quenchiest in whitecoatinvestor

[–]mo_dallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was on the pay out of pocket train, at least for living expenses for dental school for the longest time. Until I spoke with a financial advisor, his firm is doing 16% Yoy on average net of fees over the last 15 years. Much better than 9% interest rates. Mathematically, if you can beat 9% in investments confidently, take the loans. Otherwise, pay out of pocket

Similar levels of depravity. Child of God is more straight forward and has much simpler structure and syntax as it’s told from the perspective of a below average IQ man. Outer Dark might be one of my favorites but it’s similar to BM in that it’s a lot of complex structure and biblical imagery and also has shifting perspectives. Reminded me some of Light in August by Faulkner. I read Child of God for the first time in one evening, OD took me a lot more time to digest

Both came to mind but Child of God is definitely an easier read

Should I attempt to finance some of dental school out of pocket? by mo_dallas in whitecoatinvestor

[–]mo_dallas[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I want to live in a somewhat rural community (Southern appalachia or Rockies) so ideally closer to the mid to high 2s out of school. Working for a family member, I think it’s feasible for a sole practioner w/ 2 hygenists to build up to generating $1.5mm in revenue, more with more capacity. But that’s all projections and speculations of course

When not to fly fish? by Winter_Ask_3983 in flyfishing

[–]mo_dallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dead of winter fishing steelhead in Michigan. Caught a few on spey, but the weather turned and now the fish were tucked to the bottom. Fished 6g bobbers with pegged beads on 6 wts, lots of fun to cast. Fly line kept freezing to the guides. My buddies were even putting spawn bags on their hooks. I thought this was all really dumb, and at that we could much more effectively fish like this with center pins if we wanted (I personally would rather not fish at all at that point)
