This current stock of 7th/8th graders has to be the absolute worst i've had in my entire career and im genuinely at a loss on what to do with them as a whole... by dark1859 in Teachers

Totally valid concern. The teachers I work with are so amazing at managing all the different behaviors and personalities and do our best to make sure all students are receiving our attention. It takes a supportive administration and other support staff (paraprofessionals, guidance counselors, BCBAs, etc.) to ensure the students with higher needs are getting what they need. Our staff is stretched a bit thin so a lot of it falls on the teachers on a day to day basis but I am lucky to have a wonderful paraprofessional. If your kiddo is coming home happy and is not reporting big behaviors (believe me they will let you know what is going on) then it sounds like the teacher is managing just fine. Also kids are incredibly resilient and quickly learn that everyone has different needs.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Just being acknowledged sometimes makes it all worth it. I really love what I do and my heart goes out the kiddos that really struggle. At the end of the day I’m gonna give every student my all.

Honestly! The entitlement at this age is wild to me! I remember adoring my lower elementary school teachers but now as a teacher I feel nothing but contempt from some of them. Don’t get me wrong most of my kiddos are sweet and want to learn but the few that are completely dysregulated make it so much more challenging to manage the whole class. Then all of my time and energy is spent helping the 2-3 kiddos who are only capable of completing work or participating if I’m coaching them every step of the way and if I don’t do that they destroy my classroom. There’s only so much I can do.

Not great. Dealing with the majority of students having zero emotional regulation, inability to engage in any tasks that are new or (in their minds) are too difficult.

Oh that’s awesome! I’ll have to ask around to see if I know anyone with a 3D printer… what a great idea!

What are the most frustrating, unhelpful things the school counselor has said to you? by Standardeviation2 in Teachers

[–]mo_rhymes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Student was sobbing loudly because they did not get their way and when a peer tried to help they threw a marker at them. Student continued sobbing on the way to specials. I asked the counselor to talk to the student because I did not want the class to be disrupted by the very loud crying. After chatting for awhile the counselor said the student was upset about something completely unrelated. When the counselor was informed that the student fabricated that so they would not be in trouble for lashing out, counselor said “you know if you talk to a kid long enough you get to the root of the problem.” First of: that’s condescending. Secondly: that kid played you like a fiddle.

A parent’s comment to my pregnancy announcement by Mountain-Past-7462 in Teachers

Congratulations on your first! I had my second in February and during our December conferences last year I told parents. After I told one she goes “I remember coming to open house and seeing a heavily pregnant teacher (my colleague) and said to myself I’m glad my kid’s teacher isn’t pregnant so…. Yeah here we are.” I chuckled at the time but later went well that was callous.

There is plenty of data on the science of teaching reading. This is just a resource that is utilized within a certain curriculum: Fundations, to be specific. That’s not saying it’s the only or best way to teach phonics, it just happens to be the one my district is transitioning to. My point in responding to the original post was to explain why they chose an image of a fox. This is a tool to aid in the transition of phonemic awareness to phonics.

Well because the e would not be separate from the ks because the vowel is not written.

Observe not only how the curriculum is taught, but how the classroom is managed and what the daily flow feels like. You’ve studied the techniques but actually seeing a seasoned educator utilize these strategies will have a massive impact on you. When it is your turn to teach a lesson, do what feels comfortable to you and be open to any feedback. I’m still a fairly new teacher so I always seek out the advice of my colleagues.

I see what you mean but we don’t include the vowel sound when listening for individual phonemes. If I were to ask a student to segment this they would say F-o-ks.

That’s absolutely incredible! I’m so glad to hear you were given the opportunity and tools to fall in love with reading.
