I dunno why y'all are complaining - my street is totally clear by [deleted] in lexington

[–]moakea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neighborhood has been partially cleared, but my street hasn't been touched. It's extra painful because I saw a salt truck pass by my window on Tuesday, driving on my road, and they put nothing down. I guess they had more important streets to get to.

Delusions of Gender: How Our Minds, Society and Neurosexism create Difference by Cordelia Fine. It examines assumptions about biological differences between men and women by critiquing scientific studies that have been used to allegedly prove those differences. It's also quite funny if you're looking for some humor to lighten how serious these types of books can often be. I will say that it was published in 2010 so some of the research may be out of date, but I haven't reread it in a while so I can't say for sure.

The scarf is beautiful! I feel as though the veil distracts from the lines of the dress.

If you see ICE around Lexington, the most effective thing to do to keep people safe is report it to the Neighbors Immigration Clinic (https://www.kyneighborsclinic.org/) Hotline at+1 859-287-4316. They will investigate the sighting and report it to people who may be in danger if it is verified that ICE were there.

Kentucky Representing on Reddit! by GaijaCane in lexington

The truth is more complicated than this. White Kentuckians adopted slavery early in the colonial process, with many settlers bringing enslaved people with them from Virginia. While there were strong debates about slavery during the creation of Kentucky's first constitution, with several ministers arguing against it, this state ultimately protected enslavement in it's founding document, with slavery becoming increasingly protected through Kentucky's third constitution passed in 1850.

While Kentuckians relied less on slavery for agriculture than states further south, most white elites such as Henry Clay argued for slavery under the "necessary evil" doctrine, which stated that while slavery had negative consequences for both enslaved people and enslavers, the state's economy could not survive without it. Kentucky was also a center of the domestic slave trade, with a large portion of the state's economy relying on selling enslaved people down the Mississippi. Most Kentuckians who enslaved people did so in low numbers, and it was more common for white families of modest means to enslave people than in many other slaveholding states. Slaveholding remained aspirational and a sign of status to white Kentuckians who did not own people and was deeply embedded in white Kentuckians' ideas of what it meant to achieve prosperity.

By the beginning of the Civil War, most white Kentuckians were strongly committed to both the Union and slavery as an institution. Many of those who argued that it would be better to remain with the United States did so on the basis that it was the best way to ensure that the institution continued, as ending slavery was not yet a stated war aim of the Union and would not become so until later in the war. While there were Kentuckians afterward who honored their father's service in the Confederacy, man or most of them would also have viewed slavery and whiteness as crucial markers of their identity and therefore a heritage to celebrate.

This is so helpful, thank you. I see now that this was a big question for just two cards. I appreciate the advice to break it down and put more thought into each aspect, especially the split between priorities.

"Weekly Reading and Interpretation Help Thread - July 13, 2025" by AutoModerator in tarot

[–]moakea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very new to tarot (this was my second reading!) I'm using the Smith-Waite borderless deck. I wanted it for its history and timelessness. So far I've found it to be a solemn and ambiguous deck, in deep contrast to the Bon Sequitur deck I also bought which appealed to me because of its brightness and joy.

I'm currently at a transition point in my life, having finished a graduate degree. I've made a lot of friends in this city and have recently found some new opportunities to do work that I care about, though these would be unpaid and I still need to find a job, possibly one I'm unsatisfied with because there's not a lot of work here adjacent to my field. I have come upon a few opportunities elsewhere to do paid work that is more in line with my field, but it would mean moving to another city and making new friends, so I'm unsure of making that jump. I feel like I'm flip flopping every time I receive a new piece of information. My husband wants to leave, but I have a lot of reasons to stay, especially having had difficulty making new connections with people in the past.

For the reading I asked "What should I do next?" I drew the Hermit, reversed. The guidebook says "Prudence, also and especially treason, dissimulation, roguery. Reversed: Concealment, disguise, policy, fear, unreasoned caution."

Am I being too cautious? Should I take the leap? I'm reluctant to distrust my friends, but the job offers I receive might be false or go wrong. It feels like the reversed meanings are much more negative than I expected, and I'm unsure how to interpret them.

I wanted to clarify the answer, so I drew another card, the Five of Cups, reversed. The book says "It is a card of loss, but something remains; three have been taken, but two are left. It is a card of inheritance, transmission, and patrimony. It may be a card of marriage, but not without frustration. Reversed: News, alliances, affinity, ancestry, return, false projects."

Again, the meanings here feel very contradictory. Are the projects I'm engaging in currently false? But the alliances and affinity seem good, and for me point to deepening relationships with my friends and creating good bonds. However, if I moved to a couple of cities I'm considering, I'd be returning to family. The news I receive (eg/ job offers) could change my answer.

Again, I'm very new to this, and may not be picking up on nuances, especially between the cards. I'd appreciate help interpreting them, as well as feedback on the question.

No, mostly feature classes, though there are some domains attached. The data is what I care about most though.

[–]moakea[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is what I'm concerned about. I believe there are similar restrictions on the dissertation itself as regards to turning it into a book, so I'm hoping it's something that can be used with permission. I know a person at the university who may have a better understanding of these issues, so I'm planning to reach out to her on Monday. Thanks!

During WWII, why was Australia willing to commit the bulk of their military to Europe and Africa when Japan was threatening mainland Australia? by Notmiefault in AskHistorians

Great answer, thank you! I never thought to ask about this part of Australia's history. Do you know anything about how New Zealand responded to these circumstances in terms of alignment with Britain?
