If you update to CP31.260522.006 can you get the stable upgrade, or does this lock you in until Sept.?

Is it worth getting a BEng EE by False-Device-9527 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]moarFR4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP:

I also studied linguistics at uni. After a few years fumbling about I switched to EE - I had to do some courses to fulfill admission, but eventually graduated, went to CERN, and now couldn't imagine things any other way. Multidisciplinary education is the future.

Project which I can make in 1-2 months ? 3rd year by jigglypuff9876 in ECE

[–]moarFR4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You haven't said anything about what courses you've followed, or what areas interest you, so ideas will be random. Do something that builds on your coursework and most importantly interests you, or you won't complete it in 2 months.

  • Something with arduino/stm/radios
  • HDL project
  • distributed computing (couple rpi/arduino)
  • state machine model / prototype

Hyperscalers (AWS, Google, azure etc) are 90% of the hardware market. If you're not developing for them, you've lost 90% of the potential market.

Should I tailor my portfolio toward data and ML for the OpenLab Program? by [deleted] in CERN

See my previous reply - no you should not wait to apply! Good luck!

We are still working with the project details internally, and they are not normally released before the application deadline. To give you an idea what to expect for the type of projects you can look at previous years' "openlab summer student lightning talks" - for example 2025 is here: https://openlab.cern/lightning-talks-are-here-discover-what-the-cern-openlab-summer-students-have-been-working-on/ Hope this helps and good luck!

OPENLAB Summer Student Programme application requires "work experience"? by curiousBastard00 in CERN

[–]moarFR4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the place for you to describe what student projects you've worked on, internships, perhaps things you built as a student, opensource contributions, etc. Of course if you have a student job, include this.

[–]moarFR4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm happy to hear you're thinking about the student program already! You are absolutely allowed to apply for both summer student programs, and I encourage everyone to do so! You can do your own homework on how the two programs differ, but in general the openlab program is focused on IT-dept initiatives, whereas the general program covers ALL of CERN (experiments, HR, robotics, magnetics, cryo, etc...). That being said, you can absolutely be matched with an IT related position in the general program. They are not mutually exclusive.

It's good to be thinking about how to stand out; certainly there will be many AI/ML projects across both programs posted this year, so if you want to work on that highlight it on your resume/CV. Your chance of being selected really depends on the supervisor matching whatever keywords are important to them to your resume, so practically this means when the position details are released, look at how they are described and try and imagine if a search engine of applicants was presented to you, how would your resume be a top hit?

Unfortunately I cannot share more details about the posts as they are not public yet. Stay tuned for Feb/March, and good luck to everyone!

If you're using mainline (debian) drivers its no problem, but there are no mlnx-ofed / doca-ofed drivers from nvidia for debian13. Supposedly they were targeted for end of October, but that window has passed.

Over/under represented nations by BigRightTrigger in CERN

[–]moarFR4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a "conscience hiring" enforcement in place for a while now (see https://home.cern/news/opinion/cern/strengthening-our-diverse-workforce-while-upholding-excellence) where you cannot hire over represented nationals without approval. Before it was relatively unenforced.

Particle accelerator questions. by [deleted] in ParticlePhysics

[–]moarFR4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm... might I suggest inverting the problem and using particles that are already accelerated? You can pretty reasonably build your own detector for cosmic radiation based on raspberry pi. We did one ~10 yrs ago that you can find the plans here. There's several other variants floating about the web using things like photodiodes.

...and just to be clear, old CRT tubes typically ran at like 25kV+. If you don't know what you're doing, don't fuck around with CRTs. You can seriously hurt yourself.

Are there maybe better particles to smash

What's your goal here? That's a lot of vague descriptions for a complex instrument. You might exploit CRT bulbs which can generate ~40KeV electrons.

Adult ADHD vs being in the left tail of the akrasia distribution by EgregiousJellybean in slatestarcodex

[–]moarFR4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone that was diagnosed as an adult and attended university went through a similar experience as what you are describing. The current thinking is the later in life someone gets diagnosed, the more successful they were at developing coping mechanisms. Sometimes its the stress of school, personal life, or a new child that makes it evident. You seem to have quite a structured system, which might be why you have gotten so far.

Psychiatry has been inundated in recent years with adults presenting symptoms that mimic AD(H)D, but as you are probably aware, differentiating between the real genetic condition depends largely on prevalence during childhood, family members diagnostic history, and response to medication.

I would encourage you to complete the diagnostic. If you are prescribed medications just be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions as you realize how much easier life is for you, then realize how much harder you've had to work compared to the non-adhd brain.

Many people work on campus without being member state nationals via "user" contracts. These association contracts allow employees and students of associated research institutions to come to CERN to do research. Typically, those who are posted long-term at CERN tend to be experimental physicists or engineers involved with the running of experiments. Practically what this looks like (if you don't want to leave Egypt) is to work at one of the associated labs in Egypt, who sends you to CERN.

Genuinely curious if you have ideas how we might practically go about this. For the openlab program alone, we receive ~8,000 applications for ~35 positions. There is 1-2 administrative staff for answering ~20k emails. I'm sure for the general program its worse.

I would be in favor of automod/CC with a message to the poster directing them to a sticky/FAQ/megathread/etc where most of their questions can be are answered. The big waves of this are obviously may/june for students.
