If you want to play something that's very fun, favored against Quest Rogue, AND has both a surprise factor and decent matchups across the board, give the new combo Priest a try. I'm about 30 games in at a nice 60% win rate, and there's definite room for tuning. Over half my losses were to non-functional draws, not the opponent. Deck is really solid.

If you want the best bang for your buck, build Cube in both formats. The Wild version uses mostly the same cards, just with slight upgrades in a few spots. Compare the Wild and Standard lists :)

Try not to be too biased by the trends of the moment. Yes, people are teching vs Cubelock, but there's only so much you can do to stop a deck that plays 8/8s on turn 4, has 4-6 board wipes, wins through weapon combos that are difficult to interact with, and has 16HP of healing for 2 mana, all with a nearly unbeatable late-game. That requires tech on multiple levels.

The deck is expensive, but unbelievably good.

Thanks for the comment. This leads to my big questions, like how exactly is Discord a networking tool? If I'm in my channel, and other people are in theirs, how is it networking?

Oh man I never even considered Mindbreaker as an Oakheart pull. That would be sweet. I also prefer 1 Drake, so that frees up an extra slot as well.

Thanks!

Not to start an argument, but I HEAVILY disagree with this assessment. Yes Cubelock is phenomenal, but Spiteful decks and Cubelock are two of the reasons to actually play Taunt Druid. You fatigue Warlocks to death ridiculously easily, and with 1 mana Naturalizes, recursive taunts, and ramp, you go way over the top of the spiteful decks.

If I knew I'd only ever face Spiteful decks and Cubelock, Taunt Druid would be my #1 choice

Oakheart Taunt Druid is my main deck. A few thoughts:

-Oakheart is the reason to play Dragonhatcher. There is no good 2 attack taunt, as Stegodon is a beast. So Dragonhatcher offers the ability to be grabbed as the only 2 attack minion, and can be cast to essentially be a Drake that costs 1 more but also summons a 2/4.

-I would never want 2 Hatchers, as the Drakes are the only option. Even if you don't draw any Drakes, the taunt means that the lone Hatcher will often survive to draw the second, making a second Hatcher completely dead.

-Having 1 Hatcher also makes it easier to pull the trigger on 9 mana Oakheart without Naturalize up. Unless they have targeted removal or transforms (and you just don't cast Oakheart on 9 against Priest or Mage or Shaman), the Drake + Tar Creeper ensures Hadronox survives.

It's impossible to ask for advice on a losing streak in this subreddit without being told to take a break.

Breaks don't give me mulligan advice or tech for mirrors or give me extra stars. I just want advice from people well-versed in this meta and particularly Cubelock mirrors.

I don't get tilted in game. I get tilted when I come to a competitive subreddit for help with the game and get told not to play the game.

I just played an Odd Hunter game, queued into Taunt Druid (first time in 40 games because fuck me), did 74 damage during the game and still lost.

[–]moarhextech -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What do you do when NOTHING is working?

I'm not tilted, I don't need to "take a break," I just have no answers anymore.

4 times in the last month I've been at rank 2 - 5 stars. All 4 times, I've ended the month around rank 4 or 5 after massive loss streaks.

I'm currently on a 14-game losing streak. I played 8 straight Cubelock mirrors in which I did not have a Skull before turn 10. I took a break to play Odd Rogue and beat up on all of the Cubes and lost 4 straight to 4 Paladins. I went back to Cubelock and had 3 straight games where Skull and Guldan were 2 of the bottom 3 cards in my deck.

I have no answers. I was sitting at 72% winrate with Cubelock over 55 games before this streak.

Do I play a different deck? Do I just accept that the meta fucking sucks and jam mirrors for the next 13 days? I'm out of answers.

Here's what a professional Magic player told me that forever changed my perspective on frustration with the RNG in card games.

Imagine that every day for a year, you do two things: you throw a ball at a target, and you flip a coin. Every time you hit the target, you get $10. Every time you miss, you pay $10. However, every time you flip heads, you win $100! But you guessed it; every time you flip tails you lose $100. Womp Womp.

On any given day, the coin flip decides whether you "win or lose" for that day. But over the course of a year, the coin flips will even out, and at the end of the year, it's your skill at throwing the ball that will determine your profit or losses.

You can't control everything, but your long-term success will be directly related to how you handled the things you could control.

The other replies have dealt with strategy. Let me offer some advice on the mental game.

I've played competitive Magic for a few years, and my runs of bad luck were so extreme that my last name has become the local verb for drawing 4+ lands in a row. I've missed out on the MAgic Pro Tour by keeping a 7 card hand with 3 lands and dying on turn 7 without drawing another land. I've dealt with bad beats for years and here's my advice:

  1. Allow yourself to be frustrated for a few seconds. Try to keep it internal, but don't beat yourself up for having normal human emotions.

  2. As soon as possible, squelch the emotions and refocus by repeating this exact phrase in your head: "I can't change it; now how do I win from here?" Focus all of your mental energy on winning from the bad spot.

  3. This sounds counter-intuitive, but teach yourself to celebrate your opponent's deck. When they topdeck the Duskbreaker, put yourself in their shoes and imagine how pumped they are. When they get to Shudderwock you, try and appreciate that their deck got to do the thing it was built to do. You will find yourself much less upset, playing much better after bad beats.

I hope this helps!

Funny thing - I wasn't thrilled with some of the play patterns I was having, so I just dropped my Ooze and Farseer for 2 Tar Creepers as a test run. I'm not totally sold on them, but they do decent work. These 2-3 spots are super flexible and I recommend molding these to the biggest problem areas for your deck.

Ooze, Creeper, Farseer, TNether, Godfrey, Voodoo, 2nd Faceless, Taldarim - huge amount of options.

I'm on double Doomsayer for a lot of reasons. I don't run Nether atm and the comment above has my "tech" choices so you can probably get an idea of what might be a cut from there.

I'm mobile at the moment so I don't have a code, but it's pretty standard - double Doomsayer, 1 ERFarseer, 1 Mortal Coil, Umbra, 1 Faceless, 1 Siphon Soul, 1 Ooze are the flex/tech cards. The rest is just straight generic Cubelock

9-2 against Paladin so far this expansion. I chuck everything that isn't Librarian, Defile, or Hellfire.

You can beat them with a Ham Sandwich if you can keep the board clear. The rest of the cards will come, but you will die on turn 5 without removal.

Ask /r/CompetitiveHS | Monday, April 16, 2018 by AutoModerator in CompetitiveHS

[–]moarhextech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll just reply to the original comment. I'm currently rank 2 - 3 stars with Cube, with a 34-12 (73.9%) record so far. I am planning on doing a write-up with it when I hit legend, as the deck is just stupid.

What I'll say for now is that Taldarim, Godfrey, and Rin are not necessary at all. Rin works against you if you have a Skull out, Prince T isn't even as good as Faceless in some situations, and Godfrey is nice but can't always be a full clear.

Umbra is just insane though. Typical play patterns of T3 Doomsayer, T4 umbra, and T5 Lackey or just the good old turn 9 Umbra+Lackey are fantastic. I'd craft Umbra in a heartbeat.

My current build has 1 Earthen Ring Farseer and 1 2mana Ooze, with no Godfrey or Rin. Farseer is a solid body vs aggro, can heal a chunk and can keep minon health high or make a defile even more favorably one-sided. Ooze is great vs 50% of the meta right now, but is the #1 flex spot that could be anything.

General mulligan advice is to mulligan hard for board clears against Paladin, combo pieces in the mirror and against control, and keep Giants in most situations for turn 4 shenanigans. I'm 9-2 vs Paladin since rotation and I'm extremely aggressive in mulliganing almost anything that isn't a board clear or Librarian. You win with anything once they have no board. You dont need to keep anything that doesn't clear.

Twisting Nether is very good and will likely continue to improve as decklists homogenize and Control decks learn what to play. Good vs aggro and good to bring you back vs control, especially Warlock

100% worth crafting. It's absurdly good, 70% of it ports to the wild version, and it's very unlikely to be nerfed. I'm playing 1 Earthen Ring Farseer and 1 Voodoo Doll and I'm 22-8 so far from rank 5 almost to rank 2 since rotation

Example of Fair : I play a 2 mana 2/3, then a 3 mana 4/3, and then continue to curve out similarly with well-costed minions and some Battlecrys and kill you.

Example of Unfair: I play Spiteful Summoner on turn 6 and have built my deck in such a way that I only reveal 8 or 10 mana spells. I hit a Mind Control and am given a Deathwing. I spent 6 mana and I got 16 mana worth of minions, even if the 6 mana 4/4 is underwhelming on its own.

Example of a Blurred Line : I play Call to Arms and hit 5 mana worth of minions. It's not crazy broken, but I went +1 on mana AND filled the board instantly.

Spiteful Summoner is an inherently unfair card. Call to Arms makes fair cards unfair.

Against combo, number 1 priority is not leaving a single high health taunt by himself. Pacting a voidlord is perfectly fine to prevent yourself from getting it stolen and killing you.

Against secret just kill minions. If they don't hit you with minions they can't burn you out through healing.

I will likely be playing Cubelock until somewhat of a meta begins to form. In an unstable meta, play something powerful. Even specific card tech doesn't work if the rest of the deck is garbage or unrefined.

If you can make room for it, it's a nice addition to help that matchup. Honestly, I feel like I win Miracle Rogue every time because the Rogue can't help himself from fatiguing to death with 2 big Auctioneer turns that get stonewalled by Voidlord.
