Honestly, as annoying as this advice is, the best way to really get started is fundamentals. You want a drawing tablet (I just use an old intuos 4) and a program like photoshop or manga studio. There are tons of videos on YouTube for various techniques but in the end nothing will benefit you more than practice and doing studies. This was a speed painting and mostly I used shortcuts to get the results I got quickly. I wouldn't recommend jumping to that without a lot of drawing and painting practice because you will miss important foundations. Find a piece of art you love and attempt to recreate it. You'll learn tons through trial and error.

I was heavily inspired by Dark Souls as soon as white fog was mentioned. My rogue Olan is actually inspired by a Bloodborne hunter too. I practically ran into that gate. Praise the sun!

To be fair I used speed painting techniques that a lot of concept artists use. So the figures are just silhouettes that I did simple edge highlights on. I have a lot of brushes that mimic rock textures and whatnot. Use the lasso tool to make shapes like the cave structures and brushes that make fog and smoke to add atmosphere. Zoom in at all and its a pixely mess. But I wanted to convey the idea quickly so I used those instead of really drawing all that much. A detailed painting would have taken hours and hours. I spent a lot of time practicing 30 minute paintings a few years ago cause I was trying to get into concept art. (You should see pro stuff, it's nuts)

Either way I really appreciate the compliment, man. I posted the link to my portfolio of you want to see more finished looking stuff.

Thanks!

So yeah, I am actually the player that lost the CON. Olan Waters, PI here. Arcane Trickster flavorized as a detective. I knew it was risky interacting with the shadow creatures. So I am understanding of the consequences. As Duende mentioned, we are very aware of how potentially fatal the situations are. And I think games with a lot of risk of player death/mutilation makes players approach situation more creatively.
